So for those of you who hate watching sports, television, and Facebook...

psssst I was making a joke. See, when people interact with non-screens they sometimes make jokes. I am sorry the joke was lost on you.

I come here so I can look up to all the smart people and thank them for allowing stupid me to mix among them.

I read threads on the Straight Dope Message Board and post to some of them.

I surf the web. I like anything art and science-related, with some news articles and trivial information thrown in too. Sometimes I’ll stream a video–usually a documentary. But lately my computer has been ridiculously slow, so that hasn’t been too much fun.

I like to walk. I know that sounds very boring, and I agree. It is boring. But it’s boring in a way that makes me feel good deep-down. And my brain processes a lot when I’m moving my body, so I think it’s essential to my well-being.

I listen to music. I love Pandora.

But most of all, I like to create stuff. Sculpting and painting, mostly. I just discovered quilling but I’m not too good with it yet.

I’m not apologetic at all about not wanting to be around drunk people, but it doesn’t bother me that other people live more exciting lives than I do.

I work and play with the baby and take care of the house. What little time is left, I surf the net and occasionally read. I miss TV, but I don’t have blocks of time like that in this stage of my life.

I sit with the cat. I daydream. He doesn’t.

I don’t watch tv, movies, or sports, but I love Facebook. In my free time I go on Facebook.

Hah. I also read a lot of stuff on the internet, I read books, I have pets and I walk my dog all over, I spend lots of time putting together outfits and doing my hair, do some crafty/artistic stuff now and then, and lately I ‘go out’ a lot. Doing stuff with friends, often going over to their houses, eating out, drinking at bars. I also like exercising and spend time doing yoga and riding my bike. And lifting weights when my life isnt too hectic.

Sorry, but I have to ask. Was that a misspelling of “quilting”, or is this another hobby that I’ve never heard of? I’m imagining making old-timey pens.

Quilling

I hope you don’t think dislike of TV is an elitist pose and nothing else. There’s a lot I don’t like about TV in and of itself, that we’ve done exhaustive discussions on.

I hate TV because my mom would come home from the grocery store, into the house where we sat engrossed in some program, and blow up at us for not springing up like spaniels at the sound of the doorknob to carry in the bags.

We’d bonded to TV to that extent as a refuge from all the other yelling and blaming going on in the house. My parents hated their jobs and had no interest in their children’s problems, and they themselves tuned us out routinely.

No surprise, I chose to live on the other side of the continent as an adult, and when I returned for a few days visit with my daughter, they didn’t want to interrupt their TV to spend time with her. They had four days out of her entire childhood, and my dad had to watch Wings of the RAF.

Now they’re each 78, and in thrall to Fox. I’ve vowed to never, ever let TV get in between me and my relationships. The best way to do that was to get it out of my home.

(Which was easy since it’s mostly shit anyway)

I still think it’s stupid.

This is amazing. If you have any completed work, I for one would love to see photos.

Uuuh, I thought Hippie was pretty funny, and this comment seems far more obnoxious. In fact you seem a little obnoxious from the beginning, assuming that people who don’t watch sports, television or go on Fb look down on those who do. But there you go…

So firstly: I do not look down on anyone for doing anything that involves consenting adults. I don’t have a tv, and I’ve also never done quilling (clicked the link, it’s pretty monstro!), but if that’s what others like they should knock themselves out.

So what do I do at home? Hmm dunno. Regular stuff. Cooking, working, reading, yoga, SDMB, balcony gardening. We have friends over a lot, so that’s lots of cooking & just hanging out. I do go on Fb sometimes to catch up with friends who are far away.

I’d be more inclined to wonder how other people have time for television, especially when I hear the average person watches about 35 hours of tv a week! I just don’t have 5 hours a day to spare, even if I did want to watch tv.

I’ll take pictures as soon as I feel like what I’m making isn’t absolute crap!

Picture all the stuff that, when you mention it, people say “Oh, if I only had time, I’d do that!” Well, I do that.

I find watching sports pretty boring - don’t begrudge people who do, and almost envy them for being able to get that involved and care and join in a group of people also that involved and care - but it leaves me cold and I get bored in about 5 seconds.

But I love going to movies and I am sure many sports fans would find that a waste of time - especially if it were a foreign film or small film that is not a blockbuster.

I briefly had a Facebook account, but found that to be the Thankgiving dinner from hell - surrounded by a bunch of people who had nothing in common, chit chatting about things that didn’t interest me.

But many of those people would find SDMB boring, whereas I like clicking on threads that interest me and reading what others have to say about that topic - and usually they have more interest/expertise in the subject that makes it worth reading.

I do watch a lot of TV with my SO. We have some favorite shows - and we comment on aspects of the shows together and make our snide comments or share our thoughts.

If we had the money, our main focus would be on travel - going to new countries and cities and discovering new traditions and foods and culture. Maybe that is why we like shows like House Hunters International and many of the travel programs.

I would love to have more time to read books, but with work and things to do around the house and other obligations, that is just not all that easy to do.

I don’t look down on people for their interests - although I admit I am a bit of a snob about people over the age of 10 who can watch NASCAR (oh boy, guys in Elvis suits driving around in circles real fast…) but it is pretty easy to ignore/avoid them.

I loathe team sports, probably due to an intense effort by a group of sports fans during my junior high and high school years, that left me with an association between “team sports” and “evil abusive shitheads.” Pretty effective work on their part, I must say.

I do watch television, but for the most part, it falls into the category “things that happen while doing something else.” I mostly listen to TV news programs while doing other things.

Facebook? I have no use for it. I just don’t have much interest in trivia about other people’s daily lives, and it exists for that trivia.

What do I do? As the Weird Al song “White and Nerdy” said, I edit Wikipedia. I prefer my hobbies to have some value to other people, even if it is someone I’ll never meet in a country I’ll never visit. I go to concerts, and sometimes I’ll videotape those concerts and put songs up on YouTube. I volunteer for political campaigns.

I like to think that these activities are more “active” than the three things you mentioned. At least, at the end, I can look at my work and see a result - someone complimenting my work on an article, or thanking me for putting up that song, or someone that I think will do good for the public getting elected (or at least someone else not getting elected).

Sit and look down on people, mostly.

I watch sports, TV and post on Facebook. But I feel guilty about it.

read, study, talk, play with my animals, cook, garden, learn piano, etc.

Cite? :stuck_out_tongue: I’m sure that cats do daydream. However, they are also very good at sitting or lounging and not thinking about anything at all. And sometimes I just sit and watch the cats, especially if they’ve got a new toy or if the squirrels and the birds in the back yard need to be supervised. Other times I play with the cats. My husband and I were folding laundry last night, one of his cats (as opposed to one of my cats) was helping us, and he put a handkerchief over her head. She’s really really cute, and really really dumb, so having a handkerchief over her head confused her for a few seconds, then she started playing with it. I tried to put it on her head, babushka style. Then I tried to tie it around her neck, so I could call her Superkitty and ask her about mouse flavored kryptonite. She wasn’t interested in either of these activities, though.

Cats are lots of fun. Cats + laser pointer = lots of fun. Cats + box or bag also = lots of fun.
