ThelmaLou dreams of a Doper in the Oval Office… (the one in the White House, lest there be any confusion)

Listening to a podcast I love- it’s a fiction podcast and for several episodes now, things have been getting worse and worse in general. Today’s was a recording their first live show (which happened a few years ago- I’m re-listening from the beginning in order to catch up) and featured their triumphant victory. Dumb, I know- but so much fun to listen to, especially with the audience in the background.

Sending a photo I took of a co-worker to said co-worker for approval before I published it elsewhere and having her immediately make it her profile picture… and seeing her friends comment that she looks beautiful and happy.

Hearing that two senior dogs (a bonded pair) who had been in the shelter about six months were going home because of the story I wrote for them

Having my dog greet me when I came home from work by bringing me her favorite toy.

Remembering when I got home that a co-worker was giving out her leftover Halloween candy this morning, so I had a few fun-size Snickers in my bag

Putting on pajama pants, grabbing a blanket, and flopping onto the couch.

I was being pretend pouty all Halloween because we didn’t have any fun-sized Snickers to munch on while the kiddos were coming around.

So my girlfriend surprised me today with a whole bag of them.

Baby, you’re the greatest!

That’s a hope of mine too, but I was thinking more of a “start small and work your way up” strategy, because bear in mind that in today’s political climate, the Venn diagram of “people who have potential to jump to the Oval Office without extensive prior political experience” and “people who behave like Cheeto Face” are pretty much the same circles. No one wants a repeat of that, do we?

I’m also curious if any Presidents, either currently living or having been deceased after 1999, ever used to be secret Dopers. Probably not, because if the Secret Service ever saw them posting here my guess is they would have the whole site permanently shuttered as a national security risk, lest the President inadvertently reveals state secrets.

Oh, nicely done indeed! I can see why your dog presented you with her favorite toy. You done good.

Makes me smile every time! Maybe it’s also flinging off the underwire bra too, on second thought.

Playing with my cat this morning.

She is very old–age 18–and she is blind, but I smiled when she wandered into the bedroom this morning and meowed, waking me up. That kind of meow generally means that she wants to play on the bed, and so I picked her up and put her on the bed. She cannot see to gauge the distance to jump up.

And we had a fine time. Lots of belly-rubs, and head-skritches, resulted in many happy purrs. It was a nice, gentle playtime, and it made me smile. Then I put her on the floor, and got up, but I continued to smile. She’s a great cat.

You’re a great owner, er, staff.

True enough, I suppose, Boo. Certainly, at this point in her life, I wouldn’t deny her anything, and if I’m her staff, well, so be it. Sadly, I don’t think she has more than a year of life in her, so I intend to make her last months as comfortable as possible.

Making her happy and being rewarded with purrs will always make me smile.

Yup. What Old Cat wants, Old Cat gets.

It makes me smile to know that there are other humans who know this.

Today, I went out to a yard to take pictures of one of the dogs. He’s been in the shelter basically his whole life- adopted a few times, but always returned. He seems to actually he happier in the shelter than in homes.

He was really excited about my treats, so the pictures I was getting weren’t stellar. Full of drool and goofy faces and extreme closeups. So I decided to try a toy instead. He showed mild interest in it, so I took a risk and tossed the toy gently, hoping he would fetch it and I could get him with the toy in his mouth. He… didn’t. And on crutches in gravel yards, I couldn’t go get it myself. So when I left the yard, I went to the office and asked one of my co-workers to retrieve it for me. “It’s on the ground to the left of the gate. I thought he would like it, but I guess not.”

So we went out to get the toy and the dog had it in his mouth and was running laps with it, just as joyous as could be, tossing it up in the air, tail wagging, happy as a clam and obviously terribly amused by his game.

In the end, I offered him some treats and he dropped the toy so my co-worker could retrieve it, but he was sure a sight- a normally pretty dignified dog gleefully bouncing around the yard like a puppy. I’ll have to bring him more squeaky toys and fewer treats the next time I see him.

Yay!

The Only Polls: No Discussion thread makes me smile, laugh, be puzzled, and smile again.

another small shelter victory:

my shelter isn’t great at milking the sad stories. Sometimes, that’s on purpose (because often, an animal’s sad story is also a person’s sad story and exploiting it is just not the right thing to do). But most of the time, it’s… well, just that they don’t even think of it. So we rescued a dog who had a broken pelvis, who will need extensive surgery and will almost certainly lose one back leg and possibly both. The director just about had an aneurysm when she was told that the dog needed to go to a vet specialist because of the cost. So I begged for permission to put his story out and just ask for money. She refused at first, but after a bit of back and forth, she relented.

Well, the dog isn’t actually very sad-looking. He’s adorable and sweet and young, but the injury doesn’t look very gruesome from the outside and I couldn’t get him to, like, pose under a blanket and give me sad eyes so that I could film him in black and white and play “In the Arms of the Angels” over it. But hey- I work with what I’ve got.

But the fundraiser- which is just a straight money ask- has been up for four hours and we’ve already raised $900. SO. THERE.
