Slept in, then listened to a podcast and drank coffee in bed.
Did some housework
Now relaxing before it’s time to go to a party later today to celebrate the fact that five of seven staff members walked out of our jobs last week along with a handful of key volunteers. Small non-profits need to know they can’t treat their staff like shit just because they’re small and non-profit.
DH left this morning on a fishing trip. Thankfully my company was not requested. So I spent most of the day reading trashy novels, watching trashy TV, petting the cats and napping. Tonight: Baseball. Since the Astros and the Rangers once again scheduled their games for the same time, I will be wearing out the flashback button.
Since I am retired, I get to do this for a whole week. If I feel like it I might go to the gym Monday.
So far I’ve talked to my SIL on the phone, done laundry, did some writing, and cleaned out the fridge–interspersed with time here on the Dope. I was going to go for a long walk, but the sun came out–bad for lupus–so I’ll hit the gym instead. Then more writing.
Went to Missoula to visit my 90 year old Aunt Mary.
Loaded up on books at Barnes and Noble.
Made a large Costco run. No sales tax paid–suck it, State of Idaho.
It was a productive, fun day.
Clan Piper went hiking this morning in the Qu’Appelle River valley. Then launch at a local diner, stock ed up on some English Stilton at the local cheese shop (didn’t ask if they had Venezuelan beaver cheese); Cub put in an order for his favorite cheese. Than off to the Rider game. Riders defeated the RedBlacks, 40 to 18, including 17 points off interceptions.
Late to the party, didn’t see the thread until this morning but…
Smoking ribs for dinner. Started at 10:30 in the morning. My last attempt was OK, but not great. But this time they were fantastic. Only wife and daughter for dinner but all 3 of us agreed I’d met or exceeded the best rib place we know. These were my personal best.
If anyone’s interested, a very different method this time.
Brined them overnight, even though it’s not typically done for ribs. Salt and sugar solution.
3 hours smoking, just open on the racks. No sauce, just a light mustard-based rub.
3 more hours in the smoker, wrapped tightly in foil and bathed in bourbon.
2 hours resting, wrapped in towels inside an empty cooler. This to ensure a really slow cooldown.
We had a greet day yesterday going to estate sales and out to a nice lunch. We went to Costco and the grocery store and home to unload. The Incomparable Sunflower took a nap while I went to the gym for 30 minutes in the weight room and thirty swimming laps.
Back home I made club sandwiches for a light dinner and then binge watched part of Dexter season four while drinking a nice White Horse Pinot Nior
Nice to read about such fun days. I’m gonna get back on tractor and try to take a bite out of the last 10 tons of gravel to spread on driveway. But, shit, I kinda enjoy it. Just got to kick my ass out the door and start doing it. Nice to see progress. So… Sun is up and wasting.
Started off the morning with couple of cups of joe made with my vintage moka pot, had a nice telephone conversation with my good friend in San Diego, watched the latest episode of Patriot Act on Netflix, went for a 3 mile walk around the neighborhood, hopped in the pool to cool off, and I’ve just started a load of laundry. Later on I need to start scanning some postcard packets for archival purposes before they get sent off in the exchange*.
