Well, it looks like** bullying **has just about run its course and left a void for the next cause celebre to fill. We’ve already gone through enough ribbon colors and causes to put us way over the rainbow, and (thankfully) the short lived “ice bucket” nonsense has now gone by the wayside. So what’s next? There is usually one “crusade” that seems to dominate the public attention until another, more hip, more cool movement comes along, and I’m wondering what the next trend will be.
Wife beating seems to be kinda trendy now, what with all the football players being chastised/suspended for beating up on their spouses/girlfriends. Predictions?
You don’t think it’ll be Ebola-panicking?
Or are you looking for some other category of thing?
Alzheimer’s. It’s been around for decades, but never has become the trendy cause-of-the-month. It’s time. All it needs is a gimmick like ice buckets or pink baseball bats.
Concussions? I recently read a very disquieting story in the NY Times about a former soccer star (Brazilian, IIRC) who suffered severe dementia and then died. They autopsied his brain and found severe encephalopathy. Basically, it was full of holes. He had no history of concussions, but of course, was constantly heading the ball. No conclusions were possible, for lack of confirming evidence, but it sure makes you wonder.
Whatever that “No More” dogshit is all about.
I think concern over domestic violence and other issues relating to the treatment of women is on an uptrend right now. I am hearing about Emma Watson and the HeForShe campaign everywhere, and the NFL situation has added a more pop culture element to the debate.
Hadn’t heard of that one yet so I googled No More which led me to nomore dot org. It’s about domestic violence. They sell tee shirts. Yep. That’ll stop it.
Of course it will. “Wifebeaters” don’t have sleeves. That was easy!
I keep waiting for the RWTH rallies, websites and ad campaigns to blossom further.
RWTH??
Thanks for asking. Acronym ad hoc: Rednecks, White Trash and Hillbillies. Not too much done in their behalf that I have noticed – except scorn and ridicule and whatever’s not too PC for other hated groups.
