SoCal / L.A. Dopefest anyone?

Yes lightingtool that’s very funny, NOT! :stuck_out_tongue: I meant I vote for 25 August 2006.

I’m working the 25th, so I probably wouldn’t go further north than, say, Anaheim. There’s a Yard House at the Spectrum, which is 5 minutes away from where I work. The Block is good too - I pass by it on my way home. Because this is all about how convenient it is for me, right? :stuck_out_tongue:

And to silenus: You know that’s only out of jealousy, right?

Hmm. Lots of information to process here and I’ve been very busy. But I should note that personally, Fridays aren’t good for me. Saturdays are much better. (of course, that doesn’t stop anyone from getting together on the 25th)

I also very much like the idea of karaoke. What better way to break the ice?

Well if the schedule gets changed to when I am in town, I would be happy to pick you up. I’m just up the road in Sylmar.

If anyone wants to come to the midnight showing of SoaP at the Irvine Spectrum, I’ll be there…

That’s close to my office. (Never heard of the place, but only going from the address.)

I like their beef/asparagus rolls.

The Block also has Café Tu Tu Tango, which was the scene of a previous DopeFest. It’s an appetizer place, so it’s good for sharing.

I really liked the glazed salmon at King’s. A little pricy though. (I don’t remember what the salmon was glazed with, but IIRC it was a seasonal dish that was not always available.)

There have been a few DopeFests at Ye Olde King’s Head in Santa Monica. I’m always up for going there, but it would be nice to go someplace different.

I like Buca di Beppo. I’ve only eaten there once, and got take-out once; but I liked the food and the atmosphere. I’d rather go to one on the West Side somewhere instead of Pasadena. We could work on a song about it.

[Barry Manilow]
At the Buca
Buca di Beppo
Pinocchio lied to Geppetto
And his nose grew
A give-away clue!
He could put out someone’s eye
If he tells another lie
At the Buca…

I’ll go if i’m in the area. I bounce between nor cal and so cal.

I just remembered that I have concert tickets for the night of the 25th so I guess I am out. Take plenty of pictures and post them after though, I will keep an eye on the thread in case the date changes.

If I have to sing? Then anything up to and including food poisoning. (It’s not that I mind singing, it’s just that I’m spectacularly bad at it.)

The offer is most appreciated. If the consensus is to meet that far south, I will keep that in mind.

If it’s gonna be the 25th, I really can’t travel that far. We’re going to Disney the next day and I’d rather not be out too late that friday. (SO got free tickets from work)

I almost made it to one of these in the Bay Area. I’d love to finally meet some Dopers in real life. Count me in.
Wait… there isn’t some minimum posting requirement before one is allowed to attend, is there?

Just so you won’t have to suffer the sin of envy.

If it is the 25th I think I might be able to talk Wilma into it. Of course if I can’t, I’ve got transportation and know how to drive it.

I’m not into late dinner as I have to drive 160 miles back home after dinner so if it starts after 6:00 PM I’ll probably pass.

Wow. The thread disappeared. Too soon to qualify as a zombie? I vote yes.

I am (now) planning to be at The Gypsy Den in Costa Mesa at promptly 5:30 on Friday evening. If any of you are able and willing to join me for a cuppa joe, please do so. I’ll hang around for a couple hours at least, so no worries about being “late”.

Please don’t let this infringe on any plans to get together on Saturday*. We’ll name Friday’s gettogether the “Wow! Funny running into you here at this particular location where I’ve stopped to get my end of work-week tea”-fest. Yep - it’s catchy.

*Stoopid family obligations, anyway. There’s never any great way to get out of them. The obligations. Not the family. Though sometimes…

I’m moving this week so now I need to learn my way around a new neighborhood again. I’m going from “Little Armenia” area to Pico & La Brea area. I don’t know what’s there so if any of you could give me directions, that would be keen.

I guess I’m clueless. When and were is this thing? If there is a “thing” at all.

I guess we are meeting at The Gypsy Den in Costa Mesa at 5:30 on the evening of Friday the 25th of August. Is there a place nearby we can walk for food?

Since a lot of people can’t make it friday, let’s organize a Saturday date in a few weeks as well.

That being the case, I’m sorry to say I can’t make it.

OK then. As usual in the LA area, there is a reluctance some people show to drive very far out of their home base, a natural reaction which I share.

Several people seem interested in a meeting in Orange County this Friday 25 August 2006. I personally could attend this meeting.
I am going to suggest that the people meeting this Frida vote for one of two locations:

  1. The Block at Orange
    Meeting place:
Koji’s Shabu Shabu (mentioned favourably by two posters)
    http://www.kojisjapan.com/locations.shtml
20 City Boulevard West #602 (The Block at Orange)
    Orange,California 92868
    (714) 769-0200
Advantage: in an outdoors shopping mall with many locations for dining / entertainment
    shopping mall website: http://www.theblockatorange.com/static/node873.jsp
  2. The Gypsy Den area in Costa Mesa

Gypsy Den Coffee House
http://www.gypsyden.com/
2930 Bristol St.
Costa Mesa, CA 92626
(714) 549-7012
Advantage: close to the hotel of our out-of-town visitor, and close to many of the Orange County doper crowd

Some restaurants within walking distance of the Gypsy Den:

Habana (cuban dining)
http://www.costamesa-ca.com/cm_dining_guide.html#h
http://www.letseatoc.com/info/habana.htm
2930 Bristol St
Costa Mesa, CA 92626
714.556.0176
Orange County’s Nuevo Latino restaurant is reminiscent of Cuba in the 1950’s, while offering award-winning food, famous lemon drop martinis and an intimate, outdoor heated patio.

Memphis (southern food, small restaurant)
http://memphiscafe.com/index1.html
920 Bristol Ave
Costa Mesa Ca 92626
714.432.7685

Native Foods (vegan restaurant)

at The CAMP (shopping mall across the street from the Gypsy Den)
2937 Bristol St.
Costa Mesa, CA 92626

A 15-minute walk from the Gypsy Den would bring you to South Coast Plaza with many dining choices.

For the L.A. folk interested in a Dopefest, how about the following choices:
