Some tech help? My Dial-up Connection box stopped saving the password.
I had a problem and reinstalled IE5.50. Everything is fine, except it won’t save my password any more. The checkbox to Save Password is greyed out. As a consequence, Connect Automatically is also greyed out. I can no longer go directly into dialing.
Anyone know where this is in the registry? None of my Tweak tools list it.
Make sure you’re logging in to windows, and not hitting escape at the login prompt. If you supply a blank password, it should log you in without prompting you. To check, hit Start>Log Off, then log in as someone different.
if that does not solve the issue you can try running scanreg /fix to see if you can catch a reg error.
you can also try scanreg /restore to choose a time before the error (reg is the only thing that changes)
windows ME also has system restore built into it. goto start, run, and type in restore. that should pop up a new window. On that windows double click on the rstrui file. That will get you into system restore. You can use this utility to also take the computer back in time (windows reg settings and system files are reverted)
I know what you’re talking about. It happens to me sometimes but I have no idea why.
Usually I have to go to My Computer and open up Dial Up Networking. In WinMe it’s in Control Panel.
Once there, you right click on whichever icon starts your dial up, and hit properties. It’s on the security tab. There is where you can enter your password again.
If that doesn’t work, it means I’m making a happy accident somewhere else and fixing it.
I found the problem.
I had somehow reverted to not being logged into Windows.
For years I’ve had this set up as an automatic login thru TweakUI, but it came undone, and I was being logged in as “anyuser”.
Apparently, “anyuser” is not allowed to save passwords!
I think no-one at Microsoft ever understood the term “Personal Computer”. They always act like your machine is some public station with lots of people logging in, which I presume is how things work at their computer center?
