Sopranos -- May 21 -- unboxed spoilers

I’m just glad the goddamn Vito story is done. They wasted entirely too much time on this plot line. The part was never a sympathetic character, and the guy can’t act.

Exactly. The guys fighting the war would stay in newly-rented apartments, where they’d be hard to find and away from their families. Since these apartments would be unfurnished, they’d just throw mattresses on the floor.

Did anyone else get the feeling that guy might have tipped off Phil that Vito was back in the area?

Tony ordered the hit on Vito when he & Sil were talking outside The Bing. Sil asked Tony who should do it, and Tony told him to give it Carlo, since Carlo had the hardest time with the whole thing. (Remember Carlo telling Tony the crews would refuse to work for Vito if he came back?) The phone call between Tony & Vito came after this – they were supposed to meet the next day at 11am at the Mall. I would guess this was so Tony could get the ACS contact names & the 200K, and so Vito could get a “ride home” from Carlo. Phil & his guys got to Vito before that meeting could happen.

About the TVs - I think it was what was on them that was important, not the TVs themselves. Tony was watching the history. Listen to the narrator when you watch again. He’s saying something about the generals marching their soldiers off to war. Honor, glory, certain death, that sort of thing.

Having Carmela gone forced Tony to have to deal with AJ on his own. No one else around to shop it out to. Why Paris? Not sure, but I think there was a lot to be found in what Carmela was talking about. Realizing how small her place in the universe is. How the passage of time washes away the triumphs & tragedies of each individual life. Maybe a comment on the show itself, and not on the storyline?

Oops - Tony was watching The History Channel. You knew what I meant…

The thought crossed my mind. Vito back in NJ, you knew the whacking was coming. It was just a question of this episode or next, and who would be the whacker. Two weeks to the finale…why waste my time, HBO?

I did feel sorry for Vito’s kids. Vito’s wife seemed more clueless than most about “that thing we (they) do”.

Because next weekend is Memorial Day, when a lot of people (including THIS guy) won’t be able to watch their HBO. They do it every year.

I agree with Twinkie about the trip to Paris. It isolated Tony and AJ. . .and provided a good backdrop for Carmella’s musings.

As far as the TVs go. Does everyone remember the first episode this season with ALL the product placement? Someone mentioned that this season was going to have consumerism/consumption issues.

It certainly has been a recurring theme. They were in front of the Kirkland sign with the plans last night. But, the carnival episode had a lot of ideas about it (give people something to do and something to eat).

AJ’s whole motivation seems to be driven by he desire to consume even though his basic needs (food, shelter clothing) are provided for.

When Paulie lashed out at his mother, what did he do? Threw the big screen TV out the window.

Carmela’s conflicts this season have revolved around her inability to provide for herself, while watching Angie do her thing.

There was Chris in LA, coveting Ben Kingsley’s goods.

That’s barely scratching the surface. There have been bits in almost every episode that dealt with the acquisition of material goods.

Might I add: was Phil Leotardo literally getting “too big for his britches” last night?

:smack:
Me = :wally

Bad pun (or deliberate Chase-ism, I can’t tell) aside, what was that all about, with the blind tailor and the wife breaking down while consoling Vito’s wife?

He started making insinuations about Jersey (mob) guys in general. That’s when Sil popped him from behind.

I don’t think it was an insinuation so much as an outright insult–early on, he said something about how they found Carlo’s lipstick in Vito’s pocket, then he said they found Carlo’s lipstick on Vito’s cock. That’s when Sil tackled him and Carlo stabbed him.

I wanted to shake Tony by the neck and say, "So he spends his time amusing himself on Internet chatrooms! At least it’s harmless! That makes him an improvement on you!"

I was surprised to see Sil lose it like that. The NJ guys are in a world of trouble. They’ve made it pretty clear that they don’t have a chance against the NY guys. That being the case, perhaps Tony should have called Phil and tried to make a deal quickly? Tony and his crew are basically dead now.

Two things: does anybody know where the title of this episode (“Cold Stones”) came from? I’m also still wondering what Sil hit the fat guy with before Carlo stabbed him - I just saw dust fly up in the air.

Tony has a few options. They all come down to discrediting Phil and splitting the NY group up. His best chance is to get Johnny Sacks pissed off about what Phil has been doing and causing a lot of infighting within the NY side.

Jim

Is that what they’re actually doing? I don’t know how succession works in the mob, but Johnny admitted he was in La Cosa Nostra - I thought that meant he’s permanently persona non grata.

John was referred to by Phil as the titular boss of the New York group.

Well, he didn’t use the word “titular”, but that was the idea.

Johnny might still have some pull and no one seems to be fighting Phil for control yet. Tony needs another NY Capo to make a play for boss or Phil will destroy the Soprano Family.
I think Little Carmine is useless. Maybe a glimpse of what AJ will grow up to be.

Jim

Interesting to see from the preview that Little Carmine seems to be taking some sort of negotiating role in the conflict.

On another note, does anyone know how Phil found out where Vito was staying?

Sil was using a dustbuster to vacuum up rat or mouse turds, and still had it in his hand when soon-to-be-dead-guy went one insult too far. So, not only dust but rodent crap was flying through the air.

Actually, the NY crew is rather split at this moment. Johnny Sack hadn’t consolidated his power when he was sent up, and I don’t think that they have said how strong Phil’s backing is. The NJ crew, however, is all under Tony. There is no bickering at the top. While no one wins a war, it probably isn’t a clear NY victory.
