I guess I saw it as an easy win for NY given that Tony noted just how many more “button men” they had.
Still, you raise a good point insofar as Phil may not have the entire NY crew behind him. Still, will anyone of Tony’s crew really want to fight for Vito? That’s how NY will try and spin it.
Well, the first thing I thought of was all the statues Carm and Ro saw in Paris, which were quite literally cold stones. But also I think it referred to all the generally cold hearted things that were going on in this episode, most notably the treatment of Vito (and his family) by by pretty much everyone, especially Phil and his wife. Probably some other meaning(s) as well.
Phil probably will try to spin it like that, but I really think a lot of Tony’s guys will lose more respect for him if he doesn’t fight back. As Tony pointed out to Sil, this is about far more than Vito. This is about the fundamental disrespect of NJ by NY that’s been going on all season but is now completely out in the open. Whatever Vito had done he was still a made guy and one of Tony’s capos, so for him to be killed like this by NY is a big deal. They may not fight for Vito, but I think a lot of Tony’s crew think he’s been taking Phil’s shit for far too long and it’s time to fight back.
I assumed someone in Tony’s crew ratted him out to Phil, my first thought was the guy who borrowed $20k of Vito near the start. But that wouldn’t explain how he knew where Vito was either.
Vito didn’t seem to be being especially careful, and I imagine Phil had people out looking for him when he heard he was back in town. The problem was, I think Vito really thought he had Tony’s protection to some extent - or at least that Phil wouldn’t actually come after him, because of the ‘code’ if nothing else.
Jersey will fight together, not because of Vito, but because of machismo. Vito was Jersey’s problem, not NY. NY doesn’t get to cap a NJ captain without explicit permission, which Phil did not have. We know that Tony and Sil knew of the plans to off Vito; we don’t know if Carlo knew about it by that time. If NJ feels Tony was going to make the ‘right’ move, they’ll back Tony.
I thought Sil had already prepped Carlo by the point Bobby let everyone know what happened. Carlo wasn’t too upset by Phil stepping on NJ perogative though, but now he has to be in it 100%. “Sil hit him first”
Could Paulie have tipped off NY that Vito was back? Sil, Tony, Chris, Paulie, & others were sitting around watching TV, eating and talking about Vito coming back, and Tony was floating the Atlantic City idea past them, it seemed. Paulie put on his disgusted face and walked out without saying anything. We know he wanted Vito gone, but wouldn’t say anything to Tony again, after the last time (when Tony asked him if he’d support Vito’s kids).
I’m just glad they didn’t get too graphic with Vito’s beating. I’ve seen the actor who plays Phil beating someone to death on film before (a horriffic beating in the movie Casino) and I could live without ever seeing that again.
Ironically enough this same actor is also horrifically beaten to death in Goodfellas.
I love Carlo. I wish he was more of a major character. Also, for an old man, that guy is buff as hell. The actor who plays him, Arthur Nascarella, was a career Marine and also a veteran of the NYPD. I would not want to be on Carlo’s bad side in the show or in real life.
That doesn’t mean that it had actually been a whole year. It just meant that he wouldn’t be doing whatever it was that he was doing for the rest of the year.
I don’t think it’s been a year. Several months, certainly. There’s snow on the ground outside, skating at Rockefellar Center, and AJ puts on that big stupid hat before he goes out. (Not to mention that big blue furry thing Vito’s wife was wearing…)
Allegra’s wedding was in warm weather - remember the complaints about the heat when they were waiting to get through the security screening? Probably June - weddings always cost more in June! And Tony had just gotten out of the hospital then, hadn’t he?
Nobody noticed Carmella’s coats? I think she spent every penny of the cash Tony gave her on coats! (Either that or that’s what was in the suitcase that was so heavy for T to lift!) A different coat in every freaking scene!
I left the room briefly during this episode, and apparently I missed an appearance by Adriana, since I noticed that Drea de Matteo’s name was in the closing credits. Can someone fill me in? What did Adriana say and do?
Carmella saw her very briefly in a dream. Adrianna was walking her little dog and had one line, nothing very deep (it was about the pooch, I think). A policeman walked up next to Carmella and said something like “Someone should tell your friend that she is dead.”
Vito in general seemed to be a guy who just did not know when to back off, when to just let things lie. Why bother calling Johnny Cakes? Why call that other guy and ask him to meet you in the supermarket? You’re right, he was not being careful, and it seems to me it’s not just that he thought that he had Tony’s backing in this instance, but that he had gotten used to having that bubble of protection in general. That final shot of him in his thin glory seemed to be mocking him—look what you once had, and look where you are now.
It makes me wonder if there’s a lesson there for others in the family (blood or otherwise)—don’t assume you will always enjoy this level of safety and security. Certainly AJ was told not to assume that he could continue freeloading. Adrianna also is a perfect example of someone who once enjoyed certain priveledges and then got killed.
