While I have no opinion about the OP, was I the only one snickering about the The Ace of Swords choice of handle given the subject matter? Ace of Swords indeed. . . .
Castigating fat stubbley girls? I just wondered if your reaction would have been the same if a girl you haven’t seen in a year gave you a midnight booty call, if your reaction would have been the same if the girl was fat and stubbley and if everyone would have jumped down your throat if your reaction had been the same in those other circumstances.
Because I read disgust in your OP:
and this:
Sounds as if you have a special sense of-- what am I looking for here-- dismay because the caller was a man. So again I ask-- would your reaction have been the same if it was a good-looking woman? A fat, ugly one? And everyone else-- would Ace’s dismay have been appropriate if the caller had been female, especially a sexually undesirable one?
Well, if anyone has too many, I can handle the extra after-midnight booty calls from good looking women. I stay up late.
DaLovin’ Dj (always trying to do my part)
I think you hit it on the head…
Hey, kevja, did we meet at a BAD dopefest in May?
I get this a lot. ~____~
This would be annoyance at the situation in general, and at the skeevy ass in question – who is gay, big deal. It’s not like I’ve never been hit on by gay guys before – that really doesn’t shatter my worldview. This particular gay guy happens to be a skeevy asshole, IMHO. One can be disgusted by the perviness and not the gayness, no?
Nah, that’s not disgust – that’s a parody of hypermasculinity, which is how some men react to the fear of even being approaced by gay men. For instance, if I were to buy into gobear’s implication that it’s my fault for ever giving my phone number a guy in a bar. Hell, I shouldn’t even to talk to guys, except about sports and pussy, right?
So if it was, say, a sexually undesireable chick, absolutely, those three standards I’ve mentioned would still hold. I would still be annoyed at the call, dismayed at the sexual signalling breakdown, and head-shaking in wonderment at the chuztpah.
And I think the analogy is quite strained – when on earth has a woman called a man whom she met tangentally a year ago for sex? That would be a seriously scary situation. I think if some girl called me up in the same manner, I wouldn’t be able to laugh it off – I’d be worried what scam she was pulling.
So yeah, there’s a double standard – it’s a PRO-GAY double-standard, though.
Bryan Ekers, that is unbelieveable.
I will never enter into a contest there, though those lego things are damn cool. Then again, I never saw any contest… Maybe he was making up the contest and put the box there himself!
Wow, it’s really starting to look like any mention at all of gay people just opens the tap for wacky overreactions. I guess I should be used to overly sensitive ridiculously exaggerated reactions from Biggirl, among many. I remember a late night sportstalk host who used to prohibit discussions on certain topics. Popular ones were Mike Tyson, Jerry Jones, and the flavor-of-the-week undefeated midmajor collegiate team. Certain topics just always went awry, no matter if they began with the best of intentions.
Are we really heading for the point when somebody can’t tell a story involving homosexuality in any way without a million people jumping up to cry foul? Are we heading for the point at which the only solution will be to avoid the topic completely? Sometimes it seems so…
But anyone who opens a thread and mentions the word “gay” should expect this by now, I suppose.
/me hands RexDart a flak jacket and backs away
Ridiculously exaggerated? You know, a person asks a relevant, calm question-- certainly no where near as hyperbolic and ridiculoulsy exagerrated as the OP-- not insulting, no name-calling, yet Rex sees “What would you do in different circumstances” as over the line, yet the vitrol in the OP is A-OK.
That’s probably because RexDart is a skeevy pipe-smoking, nipple-twisting, buggery git.
As for Ace and his detractors-- all of you overreacted. That’s why I asked the questions I did.
~!
I’ll bet you wouldn’t be complaining so loud if it was Cameron Diaz calling you up and begging for sex, would you?
(I have no idea what that proves, but it sounds good.)
I would, i mean, 15 times last night was enough!
Yeah, unsolicited wrong-gendered booty calls in the middle of the night are creepy. I’m with you there.
Sadly, your reputation and past posts on this board cloud my judgement of you. I say you should’ve taken him up on the offer he probably would’ve made a man out of you.
Good luck on that whole hypermasculine thing.
Esprix
Biggirl pardon me, I’ll be playing a card from your deck.
Esprix, it is my sincere hope that this
was some vile attempt at a joke. A horrendous failure in that case, but almost excusable.
Supposing a woman of questionable worth, with whom you were only barely acquainted, called you at midnight, asking you for sex, and you refused and griped about it here, would I or anyone else with a grain of politeness in them have the right to say “You should have gone with her, she would have made a man out of you” ? Such a comment would be interpreted as totally homophobic, blasted from mountain high to valley low. It would probably wind up in someone’s “reputations and past posts on this board”.
If you really have a beef with Ace, or he really has such a history, time to hit the old cite-o-rific, I think.
I’m with RexDart, I suppose. Even lurking these holier-than-thou threads is getting painful.
C’mon people…
Maybe some posters overreacted, but when someone uses the phrase “skeevy pipe-smoker” I don’t think it’s out of line to think they may be a homophobe.
If I used the N word, people would be justified to consider me a racist.
Holy fuck, that’s a vile, jerky comment. What kind of asshole are you?
Ace:
You didn’t happen to watch that Spider-man dancing thing that somebody posted a link to a few months ago, did you? That might be the problem.
Ace, he’s clearly the same kind of asshole as me. Because I sure as holy fuck don’t see what was vile and jerky and assholish.
Well, in this case “what would you do in different circumstances” WASN’T THE FUCKING QUESTION, was it?? The OP popped in to bitch about something, the very fucking purpose of the Pit in its glorious essence, and people saw fit to make a fucking issue out of stupid shit like that. The reason I see this going too far is that it HAS gone too far, too many fucking times to count, in the last few months. Can’t you see that?? Anything even remotely touching the third rail that is homosexuality on this board has turned otherwise civil people into monsters lately.
Since I’m approaching drunk and have Bowie’s Diamond Dogs in the stereo, I have better things to do than go on with this But I know that others on this board see the problem emerging as I do, the problem that has emerged over this last half year. People must be freed to Pit rant about something without getting the spotlight interrogation from the special interest groups of the SDMB.
