Sortin' thru that pile in the MMP

A patient gave Wifey, RN a bag of food yesterday. She gets stuff from Meals On Wheels and relatives, and gave The Missus two cans of chicken, two cans of tuna, a bottle of organic Italian salad dressing, four packets of Swiss Miss instant cocoa, three or so squeeze bags of apple sauce, a small can of vegetable soup, and two boxes of Kraft Mac & Cheese. The patient is diabetic and says she can’t eat any of it, and has told people not to give her food. I’m sure she could eat at least the chicken and tuna and salad dressing, but Wifey, RN says the patient insists she can’t.

I wonder if I could use the dressing as a marinade (for chicken or beef?)?

I’ve used salad dressing as a marinade for boneless skinless chicken breasts and it works nicely.

So have I, as long as it doesn’t contain milk. I’m diabetic (type 1) and deathly allergic to milk And I can, and do, eat most of that stuff except the cocoa and mac-n-cheese. I’d need to go easy on the apple sauce and any thing else that was sweetened to American standard, but I can handle some amount of it.
Your wife’s patient has something else going on that she doesn’t want to disclose, methinks.

It’s gonna be middle 40s and somewhat wet around here today, but there’s nothing we have to do today, so we might not leave the house, or even get out of our lounging about clothes.

Y’all have a nice hump day.

Happy Wednesday!

We got some messy white stuff, and will stay below freezing until sometime next week. Not much accumulation, and probably not much in the mountains either, but some cold weather might keep the bugs from taking over.

My cousin’s name is Shayna, which I consider a rather rare name.

{{{gotti}}} If you do book with an airline that has a discount for bereavement, at least try to get some money back. You never know.

For some odd reason I woke up at a quarter to 3 and had problems going back to sleep. So I think today’s an early night.

Nite!

Howdy Y’all! We procured provisions, had N.O.L., have achieved nappage, and soon will day drink. Makin’ sup is also on the agenda, but not for a little while yet. Thus is the state of affairs in swampland.

Clean bill of health on the eyeballs yesterday and no change in prescription.

Got back to exercise class today after a bit of an absence. Interesting how worn out one can get after a half hour of mild exercise.

Afternoon all. Swimming and Whirlpool and Sauna have been accomplished and scale says 266.2, so it is going the right way. Picked up more Diet Pepsi/Pepsi Zero today, so looks like the conversion of my soda drinking habits are pretty well completed. I’m trying to manage the food on-hand so that when I leave for the Great Southern Adventure at the end of the month the refrigerator will be pretty empty. 67F and rain almost guaranteed between 1-5am, which doesn’t bother me in the least.

Cookie, glad your prescription held. And I know what you mean, after 2-3 weeks with little gym time, I’m trying to get back to daily trips and am having to build back to it.

Seanette, I still have a payment that was supposedly made from my checking account to the Tru-Green folks that does not show up on my account. The tru-Green folks don’t want to give me the account # to check it (which is good security and wholly appropriate) and the bank has no idea where the money came from, so I just have to make sure I have enough in my checking if things ever get unraveled.

Boo fae, thanks for the weather report, I knew the Isles had a fairly temperate climate thanks to the Gulf Stream, but that’s pretty good.

Alright, need to do some Sudoku and Jumble solving. Everybody take care.

It could be as simple as she doesn’t like canned tuna or chicken or the salad dressing. Or that she’s uncomfortable with people giving her stuff.

My experience of being poor and having people give me food is that there are awkward times when you just don’t want what they’re giving out and yet you feel pressured to be grateful for stuff you don’t want.

Or it could be something else.

This is my experience too.

So the snowfalls that cover London are largely fictional then? Some of the settings are in the north, but also Kent, which is pretty far south. Of course considering other aspects of her stories, I doubt she’s done a lot of research into the weather patterns.

Speaking of weather patterns, today was gorgeous! I took Tobias out in the back yard to swing and toddle about. He was following Higgs till he realized that the dog was heading to the house, then he turned and ran towards the swingset! Not fast enough - I grabbed him and took him in, because I’m evil that way.

But after we picked up Roxy, we went to the playground and they had close to an hour there. The place was full of kids taking advantage of a winter day in the low 60s. Tomorrow will be 40s and rainy. rah.

SIL’s work schedule is about to change - I’ll have the kids Tues thru Fri. There goes my 4-day weekend. But SIL may soon be able to get a full-time slot, so fingers crossed. If so, he can take Tobias to the daycare on base.

I think all the stress and running around has finally caught up with FCD - he’s not feeling well and he said he was freezing… it’s not cold in the house. So he’s under his electric blanket, trying to sleep. I’m going to get my tablet and assume the recline position for a while.

A few weeks ago, I learned that a former co-worker committed suicide shortly before Christmas. Today, I was invited to a memorial service being held for him on Sunday. I will definitely be going to this one.

We worked at a small software/IT services company in the early 2000s. The founders were relatively young and there was kind of a startup culture, and it was one of those places where colleagues often became actual friends. Sadly, it sort of imploded in 2006: I left at the end of that year, but I’ve stayed in touch with several of the people – and even worked with a couple of them at different companies over the years. In fact, the friend I just saw Wicked with also worked there (we were officemates for five years). Back in the day we all loved that place, and everyone loved Chris. Another friend/former co-worker and I exchanged emails earlier today, and were saying that it’ll be good to see everyone even though the reason is utter :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: .

Chris was a talented graphic designer, with a laid back/casual style. People are being encouraged to wear Converse/Chuck Taylor sneakers to the service in his honor: I was never cool enough to own a pair, but I ordered some this morning that should arrive on Friday. I will also wear a t-shirt that he designed 20 years ago: the company used to hold weekly “lunchtime seminars” on a topic of the presenter’s choosing, and if you presented one your reward was a t-shirt. Chris created a new design each year. I earned a few, but only managed to keep one…I’m so glad I still have it!

Sorry for the downer post. Like I said I’ve known about his death for a few weeks, but with the memorial and exchanging related messages with some folks this has been my “thing” today. However, now I’m looking forward to some dinner and couch time with the doggy, and the distraction of a modern television show or two!

We have supped and cleanded up the kitchen. Go Us! It’s been a nice, mild day temp wise and the sun even visited. We day drank (beerverages) out on the back porch to keep the sun company.

Oopsie so sorry about your friend. Glad you’ll be able to go the memorial and in appropriate dress to honor Chris.

Cookie good news on the eye exam!

MOOOOOOM hope FCD is feelin’ better soonest. All the stress and so forth can take a toll on a person.

No harsh words from this corner either ace. Hope that you find success on your road to living a healthier life.

JtC, the shelter that I still occasionally volunteer at has a program partnering with MOW to help provide pet food / vet care for low income seniors and disabled folks’ pets. If you are going to feed folks’ bodies, you might as well help feed their souls too.

They’ve added two more shifts in my department and actually changed us from a special projects team to another regular production department (we got the contract). Now, the battle of the shifts has begun. Apparently, second shift is using their indirect labor to meet production goals, along with grabbing up the prep work that we do for our shift. I helped stash some of it at my lead’s direction this afternoon. Things could get interesting.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Or she used to like it and people kept giving it to her and now she’s sick of it, but doesn’t have storage room.

This has happened to me back in the day.

That is so sad, the holidays can be so overwhelming for depressed folks :frowning:

I absolutely agree! We used to donate pet food to MOW because we knew that if the clients didn’t have pet food, they would share their own food with their pets. If I’m able to get our local MOW funded again, I’ll contact Petsmart and see how we can start getting food for all of the clients with pets.

Growls. Jerks, do your own prep work!

It has cleared up today and the snow is melting off the mountains. I’m glad for that because I haven’t gotten the grant paperwork or any call backs, so I’ll be going back to town to ask for it. I’m retired, I can sit in their reception area and wait as long as it takes.

I was feeling hungry before lunch. About ½ hour or an hour before ‘lunchtime’ I had two bowls of ham hocks & black-eyed peas leftover from New Year’s Day. I still felt ‘hungry’ the rest of the afternoon. Actually, I felt (as my wife says) ‘frumpy’. I knocked off work about a half-hour early and took a nap for almost an hour. Mrs. L.A. cut and steamed the cabbage with a tin of corned beef. I felt better upon waking, and I had two bowls of corned beef and cabbage. The Wife started a fire in the wood stove insert.

That’s an amazing idea! Try to contact Chewy.com, too. Just to see if they’ll help.

Thanks for the great idea! What’s the worse that can happen? That they will say no? I’ve got a pretty thick skin, I’ll get over it.

My goals for the year are to get MOW back on the road, then have the roofs on both community centers replaced. If I can get the roofs totally replaced, that will stop the yearly patching during the summer. Walmart has infrastructure grants available and if I am reading them right…community center roofs count as infrastructure.

The county has some money available as well but I’m concerned they would want us to bring the buildings up to code…and that just won’t happen without passing a bond for new buildings. Ain’t nobody gonna vote fer raising taxes out thisaway.

I invited hubs to come to Prescott and have lunch while I was picking up the grant paperwork, but he wants to cook beer in the morning and clean up takes a couple of hours. He’s moved from IPAs to Porters. His last one had an interesting chocolate aftertaste but wow, those things are strong.

Making beer is no longer a simple process. He’s been doing his prep work for the last hour and is about half way finished. The kettle will turn on at 5 and be up to temp when he gets up at 6. Cooking will take three or four hours depending on his recipe and then it has to be put in a fermenting bucket (which is in an ice bath to bring down to temp) before he starts his clean-up. Scrubbing that big kettle is a process all of its own.

Meh…it keeps him off the streets and out of the bingo parlors.

Evening all. Garbage and Recyclables are outside on the curb, probably won’t be picked up until Firday due to the Monday holiday, but not taking any chances. Dinner tonight was from Firehouse subs, I’m trying other sub places now, but Jersey Mike’s is still the best of the bunch, IMHO.

JtC, sounds like you have more ambition to do good by MOW (had to look it up, I a rainfan for MOW means Maintenance Of Way to me…but Meals On Wheels makes sense too) than a lot of the management does. Good on ya and hope you succeed.

Oopsie , sorry to hear about your friend; and I think your choice of clothing is inspired.

FCM, hoping SIL can swing the full-time job, it would relieve you of a considerable burden (and you do not want the grand-children to become a burden, far from it). And best wishes to FCD; the last few months would take a lot out of anyone.

OK, some more internettin’ and then onto the crossword puzzle before bedtime. All y’all take care.

I’m sorry, I should have spelled it out first. I know better than that :frowning:

Thank you for the kind words. Its not that I have more ambition, its that I have more know-how and experience. Paperirk does not scare me. Both sets of leaders want the same things I do and more, they just don’t really know how to achieve them (bake sales just won’t cut it when you need a LOT of money) and are afraid to try to write grants by themselves because they have heard how hard they are. (They really aren’t).

MOW was very good to our friend in his final year and they set my mind at ease because I knew he was getting at least one hot meal a day. I’ve benefited a lot from the actions of community minded volunteers, it is time for me to start giving back.

I can’t toss boxes of food around anymore but I can shuffle paper like a madwoman.

Hello, Beloved Mumpers. I’ve started posting a few times, got interrupted, and fell farther behind. Keeping up here is like walking slowly down the Up escalator.

I have an appointment tomorrow with an ortho doc. A nurse friend said since none of the RICE stuff I did helped, I should be seen. I don’t wanna. I know what’ll happen: an MRI, then PT. Yuck. The only reason I’m going is that 8 years ago, I got a sudden pain while running and basically told myself to suck it up…for, uh, four months. The ortho doc said I’d torn a tendon so violently, it yanked a chip off my hip bone. I have scar tissue that limits the right leg a bit. I don’t want to be that stupid again.

{{{{Yank}}}}, I’m sorry about your mom. It’s a rough loss.

Oopsie, I’m also sorry about your loss.

JtC, I’m really moved at the pet food for the critters of disadvantaged folks. I hope Chewy comes through. It’d be GREAT PR for them, too.

FCM, I hope FCD catches up on his rest. He’s sure been through an emotional meat grinder.
