Province! I’ve wondered about that for a while. I’ve known for a while that Ulster is one of Ireland’s “Four Green Fields”, and that it does not correspond exactly to the portion of Ireland under UK rule (Northern Ireland is comprised of only six counties), but I didn’t know what the official term was for those four subdivisions.

For most I’m guessing that it’s because Cork seems to appear in song a lot (“as I was going over Cork and Kerry mountains,” “we set sail from the sweet cove of Cork,” etc.) For me, Cork always stuck in my mind because of the amusing stories my friends from Limerick told about it.

That should probably be “the sweet Cobh of Cork”. Cobh (pronounced “cove”) is County Cork’s seaport.

And in fact, I suspect that Cobh is part of the reason Cork was so popular, too. A significant number of the Irish immigrants to the US set sail from Cobh, so a lot of Irish-Americans think of our ancestors as being “from Cork”, even if they were originally from other parts of the isle.
