First off, I’m not a big Trek follower. The only show I’ve seen is Enterprise, but I didn’t last out the whole 3(?) seasons. I thought the acting was really below par and the time travel stuff just sucked.
I have now finished the first season of Discovery. While I did not hate it, I certainly would not put it on any top 10 list. Some good characters, especially the lead, though the half Human/half Vulcan could have probably been left to a secondary character. Wasn’t Spock half Human?
While I have other shows I will watch first, I think I will save this on my watchlist to view at a later date.
How good are seasons 2 & 3 compared to season one? Good story lines? Individual episode stories or one long plot? What did you like about the later seasons? Enterprise showed up in the final episode of season one, am I going to see familiar faces?
The thread on season 1 was only 15 posts but season 2 is over 200. That much more to talk about or more people talking about the same things?
As a summary (so that you can’t not see it now) in every episode people talk slowly in whispers and burst into tears. Often while standing with their heads tilted like the RCA dog.
Yeah, I was talking about Burnham, should have made the Vulcan part clearer. I found it strange that she spent so many years being raised Vulcan but quickly shed most of the Vulcan traits after the first couple episodes.
Well, that’s something to look forward to! No wonder there was so little discussion of the show on this board.
Are there no die-hard Trekker fans that enjoy this show? They seem to be able to put up with a lot of so-so/bad series. I think Enterprise had a few fans, even though I couldn’t get all the way to the end.
That season 1 thread you mention wasn’t a season-long on-going thread. There was no single season 1 discussion thread as there were for seasons 2 and 3, instead there were threads for individual episodes. So search for “discovery episode 12” or whatever.
If that still isn’t enough discussion for you, the fact that Discovery is streaming-only (in the US) for new episodes on a relatively smaller streaming service probably has more to do with it than the quality.
Discovery is sooo much better than Enterprise. I’d even take it over Voyager, or the pre-Beard TNG. Of course, like all Trek except TOS, it suffers from having the primary lead character not being one I actually care about at all. But nevertheless, I enjoyed the show.
Not as much as I’m enjoying Lower Decks so far, though.
I went back and read all the threads and it seems like 90% of them was negative. Many complaints were about the “grittiness” or “darkness” of the shows compared to TOS. Also a lot of bad guesses about upcoming plot developments.
Nice to hear some people liked it. I think at this point I’m going to back burner it and try it at a later time.
Some people have suggested, rather forcefully, that I have too high of a bar for the kind of art and animation I like. I won’t watch a lot of animated shows if I don’t like the art no matter how good the show is. A quick look at the art for Lower Decks tells me I wouldn’t watch it. I have had many people recommend it though, I know it’s well liked.
