Star Wars: Battlefront. Anyone got it?

I’ve been looking forward to this game for a while now. I just bought it today but haven’t had a chance to play it and won’t for maybe another day. Any Dopers playing it? How’s the online play? Should I return and just rent it instead?

Went to get this yesterday but was sold out in the 1st hour. Hopefully pick one up before the weekend. I’ve heard some very good things about it so far and who can pass up an opportunity to shoot an ewok in the face? :stuck_out_tongue:

I bought it and it’s pretty good. The battle play is a blast, you can play any number of different positions in the armies (each with different weapons), plus you can take hold of any turret or vehicle you like.

The online play is fun, but as a person who is a devout SOCOM II fan, I’m disappointed. It’s similar to other online games in that it’s not very organized, doesn’t have a good structure for finding open games, etc. Once you get in on the game, it’s fun but I don’t like the use of computer bots to fill out the armies in there. I want to know that when I gun somebody down, it’s a real person!

I keep waiting for Lucasarts to release the demo so’s that I can try it.

Look, I just want to stomp Ewoks with at AT-AT.

I started the same thread a while back for the xbox which system do you have?

(I have it for the PC)

I think it is a fun little game. The environments and sound design are good, there are distinct differences among the character classes and factions which keep it interesting for a while. If you play with a partner, it is possible to make some strategic moves on the maps rather than engage solely in the frantic firefight.

I would like to have a few more maps, though I would probably have that complaint no matter how many were included in the game. Vehicle controls are a bit clunky, IMO, particularly for the fighters and speeder bikes. Enemy AI is somewhat lacking, a number of times I have seen characters pinned in corners or running in place against walls.

Overall I would give it a B to a B+.

It’s just another skin for BF 1942, albeit a fun one. The sounds are particularly good. The scenes are very well represented, go to Endor for instance and look up to see the unfinished Death Star, plus destroyers flying over etc.
On the whole, glad I’ve got it, but like most of these things (for me at least), has a somewhat short shelf life.
(BTW PC version on a 2.8, no probs so far.)

I have to say I enjoy it. I just picked it up for the PC a few days ago. Some of the maps feel very “arena”-like but others are large or interesting enough to feel like you are part of a big battle.

The Hoth battles are probably the best (especially during multiplayer). It really does feel like the scenes from the movie when you are riding in an AT-AT or piloting a snowspeeder. Sometimes, I just like to find a nice spot on top of a snow drift and just watch the battle unfold through my sniper scope.
I guess the only complaints I have is that the controls for the back seat of the speeder tends to suck and you can’t see shit. (I still can’t figure out the tow cable).

Also, in none of the Star Wars videogames is there a decent Rebel tank. In SW:BF they have some POS that looks like Lukes speeder with a turret on it.

I don’t have x-box live and from the reviews I’ve read its really more fun for multiplayer/online whatever. So to people who have it is it any fun just single player???

The single player is alright. The AI varies between dumb as a sack of hammers and frusttratingly accurate. I habve gotten through a few good single player games and you will have fun. It’s just more fun online.

I think you can also play splitscreened.

Does anyone have it for PS2? I don’t imagine it would be that different from the XBox version, but I know diddly squat about the different platforms. The game looks like a lot of fun. Is it mostly running around and shooting things, or are there more complicated missions? Personally, I love a good brainless shoot-em-up with pretty pictures.

I have it for the PS2 and it’s pretty good. Decent looking graphics and not much in the way of complex strategy - basically, it’s capture the flag. You and your team claim various checkpoints and basically try to keep as many of them under your team’s control until the end of the round. The number of checkpoints you control will determine how strongly your team is doing. Eventually, you just annihilate the other team completely and the level is over. From what I can tell so far, there isn’t much in the way of variety in the game play, but what it does, it does relatively well.
