Very exciting. Battlefront is one of my favorite all-time shooters.
I have a co-worker who gives me shit that I am a gamer at my age (in his mind gaming is for high school kids or younger).
He is also a diehard Star Wars fan (grew up with it same as I did).
I showed him the trailer and he was humble about it. He had to admit that yeah, as good as that looked there was a (big) part of him that wanted to fly an X-Wing or fight an Imperial Walker.
For my part I am super excited but it is moderated by the long years of dashed hopes from previous games. In short I am highly suspicious of the hype train. Still, I really, really hope this one lives up to its promise.
(The trick to balancing these, I think, is to never pre-purchase any of these games. Far, far too many have left me feeling ripped off. Best to wait and see. That said fingers crossed for this one.)
What I’d really love is game the plays like Planetside 2, but with a Star Wars license. I’m not sure how close this comes.
This is why I’ve long maintained that Star Wars is a better setting for video games than for movies. That trailer looks rad.
I dunno, apparently they’re not going to have the space combat that was in Battlefront 2. That was the mode I really liked so I’m on the fence about this.
BTW If you’re wondering what that rocky lava planet near the end is, it’s apparently Sullust. Also shortly after The Force Awakens releases, a level on Jakku (the desert planet from the new movie) will release. Not sure if it’s free or paid DLC.
Not close at all.
It seems the maps are for 20 vs 20.
I’m hoping the PC version opens it up to the full 64 of BF4.
Still it’s probably going to come down to the level design in terms of how epic it feels.
Indeed and single player has apparently gone from afterthought to practically non existent.
This, I was not aware of. That is disappointing.
Yeah.
I am guessing that is probably due to a short development cycle.
Disney only bought the franchise back in late 2012. Presumably it took some time before they had things together enough to approach a development studio to make the game with the timeline being release of the new Star Wars film this December.
I would think a full-blown, AAA Battlefront title would take a minimum of three years to produce. These guys had maybe two years to pull it off so some things got left out.
Just me guessing though.
There are some interesting ideas here: I like the idea of not having classes, and letting everyone mix and match their equipment loadouts (though balancing will be tricky). And they’ve said there’ll be fighting on Endor, and I don’t think I’ve ever, over four decades of gaming, fought a battle inside a gas giant. But before you get too excited:
Star Wars: Battlefront came out in 2004. I don’t know much about programming, but I know that it’s difficult and complicated, and I don’t think you’re going to engender much faith in your abilities when you demonstrably can’t figure out ideas like “the number 3” (or the difference between a ‘trailer’ and a ‘preview’, but that’s hardly unique to them).
Send him over to GOG; he can buy games that’ll let him do both. They’ve already gone on record saying this one won’t have space combat (though there might still be in-atmosphere stuff) and the AT-AT segments will be on-rails. Get more information before you buy anything.
Good advice for me.
For him I doubt he will ever play a video game so I am more than happy to let him think Battlefront is more than it is if only to shut him up about me being lame for playing video games.
YAY! Just heard the PC version will support Dolby Atmos sound! So we’ll get full 3D audio direct from the engine for our headphones, something that hasn’t happened since the days of hardware accelerated sound via Soundblaster cards and the like!
I was hoping this gen would also mean better sound, but so far, no go.
So excite!
I don’t really care about the lack of space battles, since they were (for me) the worst part about Battlefront, especially since games like TIE Fighter were fresher in my mind back then. Why have they never been able to match those? Ditto for the lack of singleplayer. That’s not what Battlefront is about.
The use of the DICE engine is really good news, since Battlefront is all about huge-scale battles across large maps. I hope they still include the hordes of NPC troops that made it unique. Even with the ability to have 64 v 64 battles, having 128 players and a few thousand bots in a Star Wars setting would be just fantastic.
Sadly I hate to say I agree.
