Stargate Universe, series premiere (open spoilers)

Ever consider that other people disagree with your assessment of the Stargate franchise?

You know, there’s stuff on TV that I don’t like too. Here’s what I do. I know this will sound wacky, but stick with me here. I don’t watch it. And then, I don’t read threads that discuss it.

I know, crazy huh?

That said, I liked it. I thought it was pretty good for a pilot.

I liked it. Wish they’d had an Atlantis cast member cameo though (besides Sam anyway, who counts for SG1 more)

Liked it.
Liked the reference to the ship “The General Hammond”
Have always liked the inner geek references from the last 5 years or so of SG-1 and forward.
Liked that Eli had to ask for pants.

As pointed out upthread, they can use that shaky-cam stuff more judiciously.

I thought the idea behind them being thrown out of the Stargate at the receiving end was because of the shockwave being pushed through the wormhole from the blown-up planet end.

On the notion of not dialing a 9th chevron from earth. 9th chevron needs POWER. Earth based dialing of 7 chevrons required a good bit of power. When they went for the 8th chevron, it needed more power. 9th chevron needs way more power.

I have never watched a single episode of any of the Stargate TV shows (however I did enjoy the movie), but author John Scalzi is a create consultant on the show and he’s been pimping it a little bit through his various online personae.

As someone who never had any interest in Stargate before, but is a big fan of Scalzi and wants to support the things he does, would I be able to enjoy the show?

Couldn’t tell you, but I can tell you this show is Stargate through and through. People are saying it’s “dark and edgy.” Frankly, I don’t see it as any darker or edgier than the other shows. It’s dark & edgy like DS9 was a dark and edgy Star Trek. It’s NOT dark & edgy like BSG, thank the gods. I feared that the most.

They haven’t fallen into their planet of the week routine yet, but just the fact they firmly established that as the weekly formula makes me believe it’s still the Stargate I know & love, annoying medieval planets aside.

I think some of the “science” might be confusing, but you should be okay.

I didn’t like the fact that it started in medias res. It was cute when Homer did it, but Stargate people, you aren’t Homer. It was also too dark…not in terms of tone, but just in terms of lighting.

But, that being said, it was just a first episode, so who knows how it’ll turn out.

Which episode of the Simpsons was that?

Both SG-1 and Atlantis started a bit bland, but both improved in the second season. I’ve always thought the best part about Stargate was the interpersonal relationships and camaraderie between the main cast, and that takes time to establish.

I thought *SGU *was pretty good and I’m going to keep watching it.

Thought occurred. The ship has a map of everywhere it has been. This ship has been preceded by other ships that made gates and dhd’s and deposited the gates and dhd’s on other planets. With those two bits of info, can’t they just dial themselves a step by step route back home? Or am I getting ahead of myself in the episodes? And if the ship stops somewhere for 12 hours or so…can’t folks like chief Lou Diamond Philips reverse the steps and gate-to-gate-to-gate and get from earth to the ship, so he’ll show up in more than one epi?

Then the series can change slightly from the rag-tag group that is trapped onboard to a group that chooses to stay to go exploring.

Just thinking.

Interesting thoughts.

With those communication stones - what was it, five? - they could take turns spending a day back home on earth, in someone else’s body of course. That would ease tension a bit, don’t you think? It might make an interesting episode if someone switched with a volunteer back home and they decided to stay. I see lots of acting possibilities with people switching bodies and having to act like different people.

As for gating back to Earth, I see some problems. Rush might (conveniently) not be able to get that much specific information out of the Ancient database. Destiny might not be cooperative with that either. I can see Destiny developing a bit of a personality, like Moya. She’s already anticipating their needs, but apparently is tight-lipped about exactly what she’s selecting for them on each planet. You’d think she’d pick a planet with an intergalactic-capable gate, if there was one and it fit her schedule.

They’ve traveled many, many, maaaaaany galaxies away from the Milky Way. I don’t think Destiny can power that kind of gate-jump, and I also don’t think they have a fresh ZPM handy. So just like in Atlantis, they’ll have to scrounge around for one. Gating within galaxies is a lot easier power-wise than intergalactic gating.

I’ll be interested in what Destiny’s power source is, that allows her to FTL but not in hyperspace. She really ought to have some sort of beyond-infinite power source.

I think it would be more interesting if they strictly kept to to the whole “stranded billions of light-years from home with know way back” idea and had no further contact with Earth at all. Any scenes set on Earth are either flashbacks or “meanwhile back home” stuff. Atlantis had the same premise at first, but soon found ways around it.
I also got the impression that they’re trying to be more like BSG, but that doesn’t seem to be working and they might be better off not trying. I really hope that nurse (their sole HCP) isn’t some wonder prodigy who’s just as good as an MD. She’s what 24, 25? Have them really suffer from lack of medical supplies and skills. Of course they’ll probally soon discover the Destiny’s sickbay with all it’s mircule Ancient medical technology that will more that compestate for her lack of medical training.

Why were the CO2 scrubbers depleted? No one has ever been on the ship to create CO2, right, because the ancients learned to ascend before they decided to use the ship? So why would there be a need to scrub CO2 out of the air at all?

Other than that, it’s a slow start, but interesting. Wonder why the Hammond didn’t have one of those Asgard Death Rays installed. Should have made quick work of those Goa’uld motherships.

But StarGate is nothing if not inconsistent with its plot devices, so I’ll keep watching to see what happens. The ship’s been travelling for thousands of years to get where it is, I don’t think a quick drop into reverse and a press of the “Turbo Boost” button is going to get them home anytime soon.

My vote is that Rush did something with the communication devices at the home office to render them inoperable for a little while, just to build dramatic tension.

Agreed with the CO2 scrubbers. They have had no CO2 to scrub…ever. They should be fine.

Not real happy with the show though so far.

First, I am not happy at all with the crew dynamics. The people involved in the Stargate program are all supposed to be the best of the best of the best. Presumably anyone who gets to be a part of the program has been vetted and scrutinized more closely than a Secret Service agent would. These are supremely stable, sharp people. Hell, I bet even the cooks are closely scrutinized.

Further, it is a military run operation. Sure outside scientists participate but the scientists are at the command of the military.

So what is with all the squabbling like a bunch of kids? By rights when they found themselves on the ship it’d be all military precision to get things done to take stock of the situation and not a bunch of whiny brats about to fall apart.

Second, and this may be partly due to the SG franchise being insanely skimpy on sets/special effects, what is with their new ship? This is supposed to be an Ancient designed and built ship. Presumably so technically advanced it’d make Asgard ships look clunky in comparison. Instead of some hi-tech masterpiece the ship is more akin to being inside a WWII era submarine. I feel like I am watching Das Boot in space. Corridors are dim, sludge pouring out of scrubbers (not to mention behind a panel so flimsy it looks made out of tin), clunky steel doors, camera globe dispensing machines that seem more rickety than a gumball machine and so on. Did the Ancients have zero sense of aesthetics?

Maybe it is all to add a sense of gloom and menace but c’mon.

So far I am very underwhelmed and disappointed. I’ll give it a few more shows but not holding out a lot of hope.

Were the scrubbers depleted or just corroded from 1,000s of years of non-use? Seems to me if something (bacteria maybe?) was generating CO2 and the scrubbers were depleted, then the CO2 levels would have been lethal before they arrived. OTOH, if they were designed to actively scrub CO2 but they sat unused, I could see them corroding like an old battery or something. It looked as if a minimal environment was maintained for when someone showed up, but started failing immediately upon being stressed by the arrival of (80 some?) humans.

I’d like to know who the Lucians were getting intel from and what fool thought attacking a sensitive, touchy drilled-into-the-planets’-core-which-never-ends-well secret Stargate project was a good idea? “They’re going to figure out the 9th chevron! Destroy them!” Uh, why? If the plan was to occupy the base, how was that going to work? The Lucian Alliance was only distracting the Hammond while the main assault was on the base. How were they going to occupy it with the Hammond still up there and for all we know does have an Asgard Death Ray?

It looked like he did go back to Earth for a bit, but he couldn’t have been gone long, and what was the scientist he switched with doing on Destiny while Rush was back on Earth? I HIGHLY doubt General O’Neill put Rush in charge. Also, Rush was standing right there with a suitcase filled with comm stones and everyone just decided they had better things to do than use them? Scott didn’t think even a five-minute little trip back to Earth was necessary?

Yeah, I think that’s the “dark & edgy” rip off of BSG they used to sell the show to the execs, but hopefully won’t go far. I’ll puke if they’re seriously going for another Galactica with Destiny.

No you dont, you can watch it online, Hulu.com

I love stargate, its my favorite show. I do not think this show will do good. 3 or 4 seasons IMO it will be the Enterprise of the Stargate franchise. The whole new place every week idea i despise. I saw enough freak of the week on Smallville. I want big story arcs DS9 style.

So, we’ve seen pt. III of the series premier. What do we think?

Scott is prone to religious visions that may or may not actually be helping him and according to his personal priest-ghost, “[God] has a plan for him/them.” Baltar a little? Are we going to be getting regular flashbacks? Man, that’s trendy now. Not a run-of-the-mill backstory though. Parents died when he was four, raised by alcoholic priest who dies, then knocks up a 16-year-old who isn’t going to keep the kid, thereby screwing up his calling to the priesthood. Did I get that right?

They make it back to the gate with slightly less than seconds to spare. Is that going to be a weekly thing? Oh well, we’ve seen them diving through gates followed by Death Glider fire enough times. If the gimmick works, use it a lot!

Wonder if we’ll see the two scientists who gated to a locked out planet ever again? Or do you think they made it back but they didn’t show it? They did mention they’d send them a remote.

When the ship stops and there are other planets “in range of the ship’s stargate,” that means a single galaxy right? So each week isn’t just another planet, but a new galaxy? At first I thought the four other locked-out planets in this particular galaxy must have simply been uninhabitable, but now it occurs to me planets would more likely get locked out because each galaxy probably already has at least one extant, dominant race/species that doesn’t take well to intrusions via these stargates popping up all over. If those two scientists didn’t do it, sooner or later someone’s going to alert and piss off a species just waiting for that Destiny to show up.

Destiny doesn’t have the power capability to dial Earth. I buy that except I really want to know how the ship can possibly be low on power but still FTL all over the universe and deflect all those interstellar particles & gases we see swirling around the hull. I like that effect, BTW.

I get a kick out of how no matter what supplies they managed to grab during the evacuation, Stargate crews always manage to have a large military uniform wardrobe available so they can play dress-up for each planet.

Just rewatched that final scene. The little pod that undocked and went its own way definitely didn’t look like it was standard equipment of the Destiny’s. Very interesting.

Is Destiny still headed more or less “away” from the Milky Way, or by now is it just making a continuous circuit around the universe? I was just thinking if the Ancients sent out a wave of gate-building ships, then sent out Destiny as a second wave to more or less catchup to the first wave, it must have caught up to the gate-building ships by now, right? Or, as usual the Ancients just left their toys running without considering anyone beyond themselves, and now the whole universe is being subjected to a viral plague of self-replicating gate-building ships.

Can someone explain a name to me? The floating camera things. The “kenos”? Kenos?? Anyone understand the reference there, because I sure don’t get it.
