Straight Dope Fantasy Football Mock Draft

WL = ASS! :mad:

I really thought I had William Green there. Good pick there, Value wise.

Of well, enjoy having David Carr as your QB and Rae Curruth and Eddie Kennison as your WRs.

Ok, I’m going to admit to a bit of confusion here. If we are using the above format, then why use your first three picks on RBs? From the above I assumed I was restricted to QB 2 RBs 2 WRs TE PK and DT with my first 8 picks, then pick up others after that. Otherwise I’d have probably screwed with everybody by hoarding QBs or something else. I’m just saying.

Shibb, FWIW, I stacked up on WRs and RBs in the last draft (same format as above) and took K and DT with my last two picks).

But on the flip side of that coin…that’s easier to do with an 8 team draft. With 14 teams you can be left in the cold holdin yer willie very quickly…

Also, Shibb (FYI since these are for fun and learning for later drafts), I don’t think that Lamar Smith is starting anywhere this year. (that I know of, anyway.) If there has been some latebreaking news that I missed I’ll go hide in the corner.

Shibb, the reason some go 3 RBs is because (1) to cover your bye week, (2) RBs are the currency of fantasy football, (3) injuries hurt RBs more because WRs are a dime a dozen and (4) they are much more scarce than any other position player.

However, like mouthbreather said, it’s very difficult to do that in a 14 team draft. I’m interested in the results.

Welcome back, verb!

Who is starting for Carolina next year?* I did that on sort of the spur of the moment, wanted to get M. Bennett in Minnesota, but didn’t want to hold up the draft to research it. And yeah, I know this is just for fun/practice, so I didn’t bitch too much about the multi backs thing, just want to give my buddy WL some grief.

*Shite, that’s where Stephen Davis went, wasn’t it? I was thinking that with their offense and defense they’ll run the hell out of the ball. Had I recalled that I would have grabbed Davis earlier. One lesson, don’t make hasty draft picks first thing in the morning, specially since Monsiuer Chan is holding things up anyway! It doesn’t help much that Antsport has the old teams still next to the players names. Is there a good online resource with up-to-date stuff right now? A lot of stuff I know off the top of my head, but then there are some big gaps.

I’ve been watching football for hmmmmm 20+ years. and discovered fantasy football last year.

But I’ve never really had anyone explain all the strategy that goes into the plays, etc. So, this might be a really dumb question, but here it goes anyway.

Didn’t Emmitt Smith leave Dallas for Arizona? He’s still listed on the draft as being with Dallas. My question is, does the boy have any life left in him, or will he be a backup this year or… I don’t know.

Please educate me. Just think of me as being blonde today :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks

Kathy

Looks like Antsports just pushed out the new names, teams, etc. Ask, and you shall receive!

cadolphin, as for Emmitt, stay away. Marcell Shipp is an excellent back, and I forsee a Running Back By Committee this year. Emmitt hasn’t done much in the way of fantasy football for the last 3 years now, so I don’t foresee anything good this year. Arizona has a good o-line, and he’ll occassionally put up some numbers, but he’s just not a consistent back to rely on. Most of the leagues I’ve done have been QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, RB/WR, TE, K, DEF, and Emmitt might not be a bad 4th or 5th RB. He’s worth one or two plug-ins a year, based on the match up.

Next week we should do 2 12-team drafts, so we can have anywhere from 12 to 24 people involved. We have at least 12 active players, some of which may not want to do 2 drafts, so that might be a good idea.

I hate not having the TE column. Too hard to pick WRs.

Thanks Munch!

Sounds fun to me - next week I mean. I go through terrible withdrawls this time of the year…

Arizona now have three RBs, at least: Emmit, plus Thomas Jones, who was their starter, and Marcel Shipp (who IMO should have been the starter last year and did start some games towards the end of the season).

A couple of reasons that people will stay away from Emmitt, in no particular order:

  • The Cardinals are one of the worst run franchises in the NFL, in a constant state of disarray.
  • They’ve changed QBs, releasing Jake Plummer and picking up Jeff Blake, who I guess might be their starter.
  • They let one of the best recievers in the NFL, David Boston, go, and really have no receivers to replace him.
  • Teams will stack against the run and dare Arizona to try and throw on them.
  • Emmitt is getting pretty old for a RB and has a LOT of mileage on him. He’d probably do okay on a team with an established passing game.

Also, looking at ANT … the player’s teams look like they have been updated but the bye weeks are still wrong.

I was thinking about the age/milage factor when I asked. I didn’t know all the whys and wherefors about Arizona, but I do know they’ve never struck me as a team to watch.

Thanks

Because it hurts you all way more than it hurts me. Looking over the draft board yesterday I noticed that everybody behind me except Camel Toes only had 1 RB. Which I took to mean that at least half the picks before I picked again would be spent on RBs regardless of what I did. I also noticed that Willy Green was by far the best RB left on the board. If I’ve got three solid RBs when everyone else has just one or two, that gives me a huge advantage because I have the flexibility to deal with bye weeks, injuries, and weigh matchups in my evaluations.

The final reason that sealed my decision, like I said above, was that it doesn’t figure to hurt me much. I’ll still get a shot at a stud QB or WR in round 4, and if I can manage to make some clever moves later in the draft to fill out my roster, I’ll have a good squad.

Also it was gratifying to see that I took the guy mb wanted. (what am I thinking of now? )

mrchan? mrchan?

Everybody going to be around this afternoon? We should try to set up a time to be online next week to pour through the first 5 rounds. That’s be ideal.

I had some lovely predrafts set up before I left work last night. Then I come in this AM and see that I’m under computer control.

You took all my picks. I cast a pock on all your houses.

And it gives me Bettis. What, does computer control equal some sort of mediocre curse?

Are we going to have to wait another 12 hours for one pick? Christ.

This site has the up-to-date player moves, if not much more useful data: NFL.com:rosters.
And how is this mysterious MrChan?

you guys need to calm down. i checked the draft before i went to sleep and NC had a bunch of hours left. shibb made his pick at about 4 am pacific time. there is no way i am going to check it at 4 am. i made my pick as soon as i got to work (10 am PST).

I’m all for a quick draft, personally i don’t like the wait. can we do a real time draft where each team only gets like 15 or 30 mins or so? friday afternoon works well for me, i’m at work all day.

Move to the East Coast, chum, nothing good ever happend in California. And with luck Camel Toes will be on his, so you could be back up in a few minutes.
