Straight Dope Fantasy Football Mock Draft

In other IDP leagues I did there were stud LBs taken in the 5th round. It just depends on how you weight the Defensive scoring.

Moving right along…WL up again.

I didn’t know that. Cool.

mb’s turn. That was fast. And look at those defenses go!

I was surprised Garcia (and Favre!) made it this far too. I almost took one of them last turn, but I concluded that I’d be able to get a better QB than WR in Round 5.

Man, Hamlet’s team is getting TERRIBLE computer picks.

So what’s the story in Pittsburgh? Zeroue went pretty early in our last mock, too. But I haven’t heard anything about their RB situation. Is it just the general consensus that Bettis is washed up, or have they made any actual statements about it?

This is the 2nd time in three rounds that WL has taken my pick in the spot ahead of me.

Gr.

Off to draft some scrub.

last i heard out of pitt was bettis was healthy as ever. but they say that every year.

dammit. shibb took my pick! i was SURE i’d get hasselback in the 6th. oh well. hope i get to make my 6th pick before i get off work (very soon)

If if makes you feel any better I would have preferred to have Brooks.

Mack is a really good pick.

Hey maroon, are you sure he knows? Once again Camel Toes is only predrafted for one pick (as are you, actually).

its ok, i’ve got others in mind. 32 starting RBs in the league, 14 teams in this draft, at best 4 teams can have 3 starting backs. unless someone decides they only want 1. thats ok, i’ll just draft ki-jana carter

It’s about time I pissed off someone other than myself!

Shibb you crafty! Not only did you rob mrchan, that was your 2nd QB. Sneaky sneaky. And 2 teams left don’t have one: mrchan and mouthbreather.

Huh, wish I had counted that out earlier. There are still 4 QBs that I’d be willing to take as my starter, so I should have taken another WR last time instead of Bledsoe. Outsmarted myself I guess.

Yeah, he knows. He wants to see what’s available. As soon as it was his turn, I got on his ass. I bet he’s picked by now.

Re: Amos Zeroue

I’m convinced Bettis is on the way out. I have June 1st in the “Cut Bettis Pool”. I think Z and Verron Hayes will do the dirty work in Pittsburgh this year. But I could be wrong.

well i dunno when PUP will pick so i predrafted next pick, guess i wont be able to do pick 7 for a couple hours.

Especially if Tony Boselli is healthy.

Keep in mind that the Hamletcomputer already has 4.

If you count Jones and Pittman, that is (sickening reminder: I had both those guys on my squad at some point last year in our SDMB league).

I learned it from you, man! I learned it from watching you!

Given the limitations of the software, I can understand the hesitancy to pre-draft more than one or two in advance. It’s fine if you know you want to take a certain position in a given round, but if I have 3 QBs rated high, then a couple of WRs, and none of my QBs come in, I might want to take another crack at a QB in the next round. Otherwise I’d go WR. There’s no good way to set that up to happen, as far as I can tell.

Where is that surly PUP?!?

Here’s an interesting statistic for you. In this draft, through the five rounds that we have completed, exactly three WRs were taken in every round but one: the 4th, when 9 of 14 picks were spent on receivers.

Regarding remaining RBs … Keep in mind that there are a few teams where the starting RB is all kinds of up in the air:

Pittsburgh
Arizona
Atlanta
Chicago
Dallas
San Francisco
Tampa Bay
Washington

In all of these situations one of 2 things is happening:

•Running Back By Comittee (likely in Tampa – Pitman/Alstott; Arizona – Smith/Shipp; SF – Hearst/Barlow; Pittsburgh – Bus/Amos; Atlanta – Dunn/Duckett)
•No clearly defined starter yet (Washington, Dallas, possibly Chicago)

I’m really conflicted over my next pick. If this were a draft for an actual league and we could trade, I’d make it without a moment’s hesitation. But we’re not. And I’m leaving work and I won’t be home for a few hours. So I have to predraft somebody. But I can’t decide. Argh.

mb you forgot Detroit, where they don’t have any good backs; Houston, where Mack seems to be the starter but you’ve got Wells in the wings; and Minnesota, where they’ll probably be running a committee again this year with Bennett, Williams, and whoever else shows up.
