Stuff you never see advertized (any more)

Speaking of catheters . . .

Why?

I’m 55 years old. I don’t know anyone that uses them. I don’t wanna have to use one, but they sure are advertised. Prostate cancer?

Paraplegia is the reason in my case. See urinary retention for other reasons.

That said I am surprised you guys have commercials for catheters. I have never seen them advertised up here.

I see them all the time, but only on “off” channels like the Game Show Channel. I only have these on fairly late in the evening (as kind of “video wallpaper” while getting ready for bed and falling asleep) so I have no idea if they run them during the day too.

I’ve never seen a catheter or incontinence-supply commercial on a major network channel.

Do they still do ads for Rolaids and Tums? Seems like now, indigestion is always a sign of imminent death, when it was a common malady back then. Alka-Seltzer seems to have gone into the cold fighting business, but I still see them around.

I don’t even think they make Rolaids anymore–at least you wouldn’t know it by what’s available around here. They disappeared off the shelves two or three years ago and I haven’t seen them back since. I never could find out why, either. Nobody seems to know. There was some kind of recall, but it was just for metal shavings in a bottle or something like that–certainly not something they couldn’t fix and get the product back on the shelves.

I’ve seen commercials for Tums recently, but not as many as for Prilosec and all those other heartburn pills.

Topol, smokers tooth polish

Watching that ad reminded me of having to adjust the horizontal control on the TV. I haven’t seen that in years.

Doan’s Pills!

And the Shell Answer Man! He was on all the time when I was a kid.

In the 80s and 90s, there used to always be televised car commercials and auto dealer commercials. I can’t remember the last time I saw one on TV, but maybe it’s because I don’t watch much TV anymore.

In days of yore, I used to see TV commercials for individual movie theatres or shopping malls. I can’t remember the last TV ad I saw for a movie theatre (probably because most of them got gobbled up by chains). Every once in a while I see an ad for some kind of manufacturer’s outlet mall, but not a regular shopping malls.

Where do you live? Around here it seems like at least 2 out of every 5 commercials are for cars or dealers.

AYDS Diet Candy. Bad name, bad timing, bad taste in your mouth.

Yeah, people look at me funny when I tell them how easy it was to lose weight… I just got Ayds!

There’s an ad campaign shot to hell.

Snap into a Slim Jim ads.

I remember these! My Mother tried them once-man they tasted awful.

Breath Mints
Bubble Gum
Toothpaste (I used to marvel how many toothpaste ads I’d see given that toothpaste was an item I’d spend $3 on maybe twice a year??)
Mouthwash
Sunglasses (remember Blublockers?)
Long distance calling (these used to be ubiquitous)
Carpeting
Coffee – did all of Starbucks competitors give up? There used to be tons of these.
McDonald’s – I just realized I haven’t seen these lately. Did they reduce their marketing?
Breakfast cereal – still see these occasionally but not nearly as often

There aren’t as many shows aimed at elderly people as there used to be (I remember when there used to be loads of prime time shows like Lawrence Welk’s, which my grandmother always watched), so that may explain why there aren’t any more ads for…

  1. Sominex (“Take Sominex tonight and sleeeeep… safe and restful, sleep, sleep, sleep!”)
  2. Haley’s M-O
  3. Doan’s Pills
  4. Carter’s Little Liver Pills
  5. Philips’ Milk of Magnesia
  6. Efferdent
  7. Poligrip

At the other end of the age spectrum, I haven’t seen any ads for Marshmallow Fluff in decades! (“Oh you need Fluff, Fluff, Fluff, to make a Fluffernutter…”)

Well, there’s cigarettes…

Hey, I was wondering about that just the other day! My theory is that they found that it caused some horrible debilitating skin disease, and just quietly removed it from the market.

They are on a lot during the day on the local stations here. Kind of in the same vein as Wilfred Brimley and his diabetes test strips. Maybe these aren’t covered by some insurance plans or something and folks who need them are looking for a cheap source?
