Stuff you never see advertized (any more)

Sounds like you guys have much more “interesting” commercials than we do!

Edsels.

Screaming Yellow Zonkers:

God I loved those!

I see a lot of kids’ shows, because of my son, so I see a lot of ads for assorted girls’ toys…but what I DON’T see any more are baby dolls. When I was 8 or 9, it seemed as if every other toy ad was for some kind of baby doll (one that cried, spit up, or whatever). Little girls still play with some stereotypical things (pink unicorns, rainbow-colored ponies and whatnot), but baby dolls don’t get the kind of advertising they used to.

Pearl Drops and Irish Spring

How can you say that after the last elections?

Oh – you mean the Ranger/Pacer/Citation/Corsair thingies.

Never mind.

Oh yeah… they always had scantily clad girls rolling their tongues over their front teeth, and purring, “MMMMMMMM… it’s a great feeling.”

And it’s not just Irish Spring- bath soaps in general don’t advertise the way they used to. There used to be omnipresent ads for various soaps (usually showing happy people lathering up in the shower). But I haven’t seen any commercials for Irish Spring, Dial, Zest, Lux, Camay or Lifebuoy in ages.

I’m affraid to speak his name lest he reappear again, but I think Enzyte Bob may finally be dead. And I thank God for that.

Dear god yes. I hate any commercial where they take snapping, popping or clicking sounds and create some stupid rhythm.

Wiki seems to know:

Yeah, I saw that. They keep saying they’re trying to get them back, but I wonder. How hard can it be to get rid of whatever problems they’re having? Does it really take this long?

Last I saw the brand has been sold to another company that’s trying to bring it back late this year. But I wonder if at this point the ship has sailed, and people who used to choose Rolaids have moved on to something else (like Tums).

Yeah, I would think that if you have a profitable age-old established product on the shelves some way could be found to switch to new manufacturing facilities without pulling the item off the shelves for several years.

A few still available products I haven’t seen ads for in years:
Eggo Waffles
Hamms Beer
Folgers Crystals
Maytag Appliances
Cadbury Cream Eggs

I’ve seen ads for the Cadbury Creme Eggs just this month. I just can’t seem to find them at the store.

It all depends on what channel you’re watching. A lot of “As Seen On TV” things, and oldies music collections, are shown as informercials in the middle of the night.
I never saw advertising for booze until I watched some show popular with young men. Pet food, toothpaste, department store sales, vitamins, disposable contact lenses, sneakers, and such ads are targeted to women and families, and so are found on Oxygen and Lifetime channels. That Swiffer ad is ALL over the place, though - the discarded broom hooking up with a vacuum cleaner cover, a rake, and a bowling ball (?) to the tune of “Who’s That Lady?”.

from Wikipedia:
“In March 2005, following thousands of consumer complaints to the Better Business Bureau, federal agents raided Berkeley facilities, gathering material that resulted in a 112-count criminal indictment. The company’s founder and CEO, Steve Warshak, and his mother, Harriet Warshak, were found guilty of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering, and in September 2008 they were sentenced to prison and ordered to forfeit $500 million in assets. The convictions and fines forced the company into bankruptcy, and in December 2008 its assets were sold for $2.75 million to investment company Pristine Bay, which continued operations.”

One other I just remembered-I never see/hear that attractive woman having an orgasm while shampooing her hair-what was that magical shampoo that results in clean hair and orgasms?

It’s only through commericals that most of us ever thought of the possibility of some poor person trying to clean and reuse a cather. Eww.

Wow, there were TV ads? I’ve never seen a non-print ad for Fluff, but that doesn’t seem to hurt their sales any.

Johnson and Johnson (owners of McNeil) had major problems with their production plants uncovered during the numerous Rolaids/Tylenol/Zyrtec/Sudafed/Imodium/Simply Sleep/Motrin/Mylanta/etc. recalls a couple of years ago. One of their plants was completely shut down, and their other two are under heavy federal supervision with limited manufacturing capability. They’ve slowly been rolling product back out, but still have limited production capability at the two plants, and have been using what capacity they have on getting bigger profit and core products back on the market. Rolaids was a second-tier brand, below Tums in the antacid segment, and probably won’t be back for another year or more. Link to NYTimes article on the continuing unavailability of product.
