Sad, but not too surprising. He’s a very progressive Pope…but that’s a little like saying “a very liberal Puritan.” Catholic dogma is still obsessive regarding human sex-roles, and will take a long time before becoming reformed. Look how long it took them to accept Evolution, or even Geocentrism. They still oppose condoms for prevention of pregnancy.

But hey, maybe we think encouraging the positive moves by the Pope is more important that castigating him for toeing a line the Catholic Church has been toeing for literally millennia. You can’t change something like that all at once, no matter how much we might like it if we could.
In addition to other’s comments I also believe that he is factually incorrect about what is being taught. It is not that you can “choose your gender” but that your intrinsic gender may not be accurately reflected by the sex displayed by your body.
