Stupid Republican idea of the day

Lil’ bit of both actually - I honestly didn’t know what the 3 Rs were :o.

That’s what I thought, sometimes american dopers do not realize that those of us outside of the “anglosphere” can understand their words but not all their cultural baggage, I spend years wondering what the ever-loving fuck was a “GOP”, I deduced by context that it was the Republican party, but the meaning of the acronym escaped me. (It means Great Old Party **Kobal2 ** )

Grand Old Party. I have no idea how that originated.

And nobody should be embarrassed about not getting another culture’s colloquialisms. How would you know them?

Grand Old Party. (started out as gallant old party)

nm

Grand yes, I had neuron misfire while writing that, something that seems to happen a lot around the GOP :stuck_out_tongue:

The joke sounded so much like one an American would make that I didn’t realize you weren’t from here.

These days, it seems more like the Goofus Old Party.

Link for context for our non-USAican friends.

Voter suppression.

Putting aside all the legal and ethical and moral issues, this is a stupid idea.

Nothing gets people out to vote more than the notion that someone is threatening their right to vote. Nothing.

There are basically two arguments that allow this to make “sense”.

Argument 1: For voting, like mathematics, auto repair, and brain surgery, there is a right and a wrong way to do it. The right way involves checking the box that says Republican (or in the case of a primary the one that says right wing whacko). The wrong way to do it involves checking the box that says Democrat. Since it is clear from exit polls that the majority women are incompetent at this simple task, they should not be allowed to do it. While an individual woman, like Coulter, may rise above the inherent weaknesses of their sex, so many of them are incompetent that we are better served just stopping all of them from voting. Running for office is an entirely separate matter, as individual women of exceptional ability and stellar such as Michelle Bachmann, Sarah Palin, and Christine O’Donnell can rise to the top. Its just the average woman who is so obviously incompetent.

Argument 2: Coulter is nothing but a Troll, who realizes that the more shocking, and ludicrous her claims are the more books she sells. Hearing a woman say that women shouldn’t vote is the height of shock value. No one seriously believes women shouldn’t be allowed (Coulter included) but lots of people are interested in reading the book of someone who would say such a thing, just out of the curiosity of what other ludicrous things they are going to say.

Well, yeah, Coulter is the literary equivalent of shock radio. Her biggest concern isn’t accuracy or rationality but topping her own zaniness. Has she praised slavery yet?

Very true, except of course getting people out to vote doesn’t guarantee they WILL be able to vote under Republican-promoted voter suppression schemes

… not sure if praise or backhanded compliment :D.

It’s 'Rithmatic, SINGULAR, you pommy bastid!

Lindsey Graham, that wild and crazy guy, thinks it’s funny to make jokes about shooting Bernie Sanders.

Just gunning for the Vice-President job.

What’s wrong? Did Bernie turn him down for a date?

pommy? POMMY? Pistols at dawn sir!.

Praise of your understanding of another country’s politics.

Something about seeing the word “literary” in any sentence that discusses Ann Coulter makes my brain hurt.
