I hope you did not get the impression that I was defending him. I was just pointing out that he seemed to be displaying two different kinds of idiocy in his statement. I certainly hope he never comes close to the presidency (or any other position of authority again). On the other hand, wasting his donors’ money on a doomed campaign, and making the other clowns waste money fighting him, might be a good thing.

The confederate flag is a symbol of treason. The south rebelled against the US and fortunately lost. The fact that the US government allows it to still be flown says a lot about it. The fact that so many “patriotic” Americans treat it as anything other than a symbol of traitors to the country says more about them.

It’s the Republican predicament, you have to appeal to the base during the primaries or you will be hurt politically. Most probably feel that when they get the nomination it’s a brand new ball game, but that just doesn’t work in this day and age.
