Racism exists because we have sin? How does that work?

Ok that one has pretty straight Christian theology roots - everything bad in the world happens because sin entered the world in The Fall From Eden.

But that’s a problem of the Universe, not of America.

How in blazes something like that can be addressed through policy is an exercise for the student.

I’m sure he means that America *today *has too much sin - what with all the gays and the abortions and the yadda yadda. But how *that *leads to racism is left as an exercise to the crazy reader. Hell, I’m shaky on my American chronology but I’m still preeeetty sure this (warning, graphic & disturbing) predates that (warning, cute as hell). And don’t get me started on the fucking Samaritans. Buncha lazy no-goodniks, them.

I have a somewhat vague recollection from (1950s white-bread Catholic) grade school that the Mark of Cain turned him black. So while sin in general stemmed from Adam & Eve, the fact that there are different races — and therefore racism — stemmed from the specific sin of Cain.

Which makes every bit as much sense as 98.6% of what is being spouted by GOP candidates this time around.

I kind of wondered if Huckabee was going for that. I don’t know how much people generally buy that bit of bigotry nowadays.

I can see the crazy logic of “if we sin, God sends hurricanes and earthquakes and Justin Bieber to America,” but I don’t even see the crazy logic behind, “if we sin, God makes us be bigoted even though we must have free will or the whole fucking Christian model of the fundamentalists goes to hell.”

Mickelson brought up a story of a woman unable to pay restitution on money she stole from her employer. Referencing “anyone who steals,” he suggested the adoption of a new type of system that mimics the chapter Exodus in the Bible, which calls for those who are unable to pay restitution to be “sold to pay for their theft” at a “slave market” and profits made from the sale should go to pay for the criminal’s restitution.

After a commercial break Mickelson stated for the benefit of “you guys at Media Matters” he was not talking about illegal “chattel slavery” but instead “indenturing people” because “if somebody is a thief and they have to make restitution – and that’s what justice is – if they don’t have any money, Exodus says, Moses said, [and] God said they must be sold for their theft”.

Because, you know, that makes it so much better that you’re advocating for debtor’s prisons and slave auctions.
