from the link, … Republican presumptive nominee … for president … (some guy) said he will be working with the NRA “to discuss how to ensure Americans have the means to protect themselves in this age of terror.”
According to latest @ Wonkette, our shooter was an alleged self-loathing closeted gay who seemed to have pledged himself to both ISIS and Hezbollah (They are sooo BFF).
I guess he’s got issues, what with both Voldemort and Gollum trying to forget all about that drunken tryst and refusing to acknowledge that he even exists.
The Republican/NRA/Right Wing/Prepper answer seems to be a return to the Bad Old Days when we had armed domestic terrorist groups kidnapping people, robbing banks, killing police and blowing up buildings. That they want a Wild West with everyone armed where everyone in the vicinity can respond to such events by filling the air with lead and killing the bad guys. Nevermind the massive collateral damage along the way and the net breakdown of civil society and constitutional rights.
Fuck that noise. I own guns and have no intention of giving them up, but the very last thing I want to see is a USA culture where terrorism and massive public firefights are commonplace and we all have to worry about being in public - anywhere - because someone might start shooting, then 10 others start shooting, etc.
“If everyone has a gun then these things won’t happen” is fantasy thinking, just as “if we sentence people to 25 years for possession of a joint, no one will smoke marijuana” is.
Ok so Trump will be meeting with the NRA to discuss not being able to purchase weapons on the no - fly list, he “loved” revoking the press credentials of the Washington post, and a huge chunk of his campaign has been predicated on "fuck freedom of religion - ban Muslims! "
While i can see benefits of not allowing a person accused of criminal activity from purchasing guns, it is a bit unsettling* to revoke rights on the basis of suspicion alone. But i wonder how many rights he will propose stripping before November hits?
*i find it unsettling but I’m still ok with it. it’s a character flaw but I’m ok with that too.
And again I’d like to point out after one of these all-too-common mass murders that open carry and concealed carry is legal in a lot of these places. Where are these supposed good guys with guns to stop the criminals? They don’t happen, that’s why. When bullets start flying in a nightclub, a theater, office building, etc., it generally is ended by police, not by some guy with a gun.
One SDMB gun nut bragged that he’d be hiding under the tables, not trying to help out. (Another SDMB gun nut is sad that he can never fulfill his dream of visiting Europe, since his weapon won’t be welcome there. Rational citizens who want to be sympathetic to gun rights are usually disappointed when they find out how gun owners really think.)
One should not correlate the answers of extremists as the answers of the moderates.
On any subject, really.
Of course, you could say this thread does a lot of that with regards to Republicans, but the counter-argument is the sheer volume of this stuff from the Republicans and how much of it comes from people who get elected, re-elected and/or given massive amounts of money when they say terrible things.
I know a man who was bothered by the fact that he could no longer patronize a local theater because they had instituted a gun ban. Are their guns grafted to their body or something? It is possible to go to a movie without your gun!
He also always insists on not sitting with his back to the door in restaurants. He’s practically the definition of paranoia and is one of the last people who should be carrying.
