But in terms of merely ending up in the general population, well, that’s where they go. A tough guy who fancies himself an ass kicker should welcome the chance to bring his game to the big leagues. If this is a philosophical question of whether or not it’s ok for anyone to end up there, that’s different. But I don’t hear anyone here expressing sympathy those already in gen pop. Is it just these proud guys that shouldn’t be there?

That’s exactly right. And, as I have posted umpteen times, the idea is for us as a society to not be criminals ourselves, for us to be better than those we condemn to prison.
