Today I sent a letter to President @realdonaldtrump to ask for him to declare the #COVID19 pandemic an “Act of God” to provide aid to our oil and gas industry and to protect the environment.
Yes, it has a legal meaning in contracts:

Despite this, its meaning is important, as an ‘act of God’ may trigger a right for a party to delay performance, suspend obligations, or even terminate a contract. He’s trying to bail out the local fracking industry as that’s all Oklahoma has going for it. I can see Trump going with it as long as the declaration reads, “Act of Trump”.

Based on the article I read yesterday, I’m inclined to give a pass on this. According to that article, it’s specifically about the requirement to pump a certain amount of oil or lose your lease. Forget COVID-19, we
don’t need these guys pumping oil that is:
- Priced below production cost.
- Not needed by anybody.
- Literally more than we can store right now (tanks are full).
But if the alternative is losing their lease, they WILL continue pumping at minimum required levels. Seems fairly common sense to say, “You can hold up for a bit and nobody’s going to take your lease.”
