Wait. Wait wait wait. Ignore the stuff about sodomy based marriages (they are *fabulous *by the way).
So republicans are pro trans-fat now? Are they seriously going to make this a big issue next election cycle? Are we also going to bring back leaded gasoline while we’re at it? Put CFCs back in our household supplies?
I don’t know how common the belief is, but I’ve heard people on the right claim that the banning of DDT was a ridiculous overreaction that did more harm than good.

We’re getting to the point where these homofascists are going to force us to wear on our sleeves some kind of identifying marker so people will know who the racists and the homophobes and the bigots are, and can stay away from them.

Say what you will, but you know the homofascists will have splendiferous uniforms.
Personally, I hope they continue looking for new ways to present core values that are absolutely abhorrent to the new, growing majority demographic instead of trying to change those core values. They’re stuck in a feedback loop and they just can’t break out of it. Which makes me quite happy.
Well, sorta kinda. I want an honest conservative party, one that recognizes the need for change but counsels prudence and caution. A lot of people are conservative simply by their nature or circumstances, it is right and just that they should have a party and a voice. But conservative is not reactionary.
Also, it helps to have someone to blame. Like if Dennis Kucinich demands citizenship for gay whales, we can say “Great idea, Dennis, but the conservatives won’t let us! Damn shame, but there it is…”
Plus, you can bargain with them. Come to the table, demand everything, threaten and browbeat, take what you really want as a compromise, swear never, ever to ask for more, and start laying the plans to do exactly that.
How many people do you think are actually voting ‘anti-republican’ as opposed to ‘pro-democrat’? I’m not particularly happy with the democrats, they’ve got some problems. But I think that the republicans are so bad that I’ll vote for the dems anyway, just to keep them from enacting the ideals they present to the public.
Seriously, Michelle Bachman should not be in any office whatsoever, she should be in a little room all to herself with complimentary rubber wallpaper. So many republicans have embarrassed themselves voicing opinions on abortion, rape, and pregnancy that none of them should be allowed anywhere near an actual woman’s reproductive system, much less make laws about them. The list goes on and on. Just say NO.
I honestly think the only way we’re going to get that at this point is for the GOP to Whig out and the Dems to split along the Blue Dog/Progressive line. I’m not under any illusions that the Progressive faction will have majorities very often or very soon, but at least a Blue Dog Party wouldn’t be batshit insane and impossible to negotiate or reason with.
I’m enjoying this thread as much as the next bleeding heart liberal, but speaking of feedback loops…we’re acting like the Republicans are one election away from going the way of the Know-Nothings and the Whigs.
In actuality, they control the House, have the Senate by the balls, and control most state legislatures. They may be dinosaurs but the meteor hasn’t hit yet.
Not in the bubble. Just hopeful, optimistic…not for necessarily 2014 or even 2016 (Congressionally, anyway), but 2020 or later. At least as a measurable beginning of the fall.
He line-item vetos the entire Public Integrity Unit because the boss-lady of said unit, a Democrat apparently, received a DUI, and there was just no other choice…
Speaking of Bachmann, have you met the guy running as her GOP successor? Meet Tom Emmer. He’s a winner all around but my favorite bit is his view that waiters can earn over $100K on tips:
I suspect that we’ll see him in this thread again several times before the election, although hopefully not afterwards.
Oh wow I was really worried about Christmas this year, as I am a Texan. I also used to be a school teacher who was obviously skirting a grey area of the law every time I wished anyone a Merry Christmas, or allowed a student to say it unpunished or unquestioned. I’ll finally be able to sleep peacefully!
What is it with this GOP fantasy that everyone but the business owner is making out like a bandit? It’s like actually getting paid for your labor is theft or something.
