Stupid Republican idea of the day

“Now, come on, boys! Where’s your spirit? I don’t hear no singin’. When you was slaves, you sang like birds. Go on, how ‘bout a good ol’ nigger work song?”

Dan Aykroyd and Belushi, wasn’t it ?

Yeah, it’s pretty amazing that lots of rightie politicians are rushing to his defense, in a calculated move to appeal to anti-gay people, without considering they’re also supporting openly racist views.

It’s pretty goofy for Ted Cruz to be complaining about the mainstream media “acting like thought police” when the whole thing was started by an interview published in GQ magazine.

Well, it’s all Robertson’s own fault, then! He might as well have given an interview to The Daily Worker!

I, get no kick, from McCain,
mere Jindal, doesn’t thrill me at all.
So tell me, why should it be true,
That I get sick from Ted Cruz?

Mine! <yoink>

GOP congressional candidate compares Phil Robertson to Rosa Parks.

Well *that *would have been a good example for ITR’s GD thread.

Good lord! I’d really like to know what laws are currently in place that say it’s okay for non Christians to do X but it’s NOT okay for Christians to do the exact same thing?

I mean seriously, it’s perfectly okay for an employer to fire you if you’re damaging their brand. Which is exactly what happened with Robertson.
Nobody’s civil rights have been infringed upon. He’s still perfectly welcome to say all the dumb shit he wants. Just like we’re perfectly welcome to call him on when he does.

Oh they are considering racist views allright; it’s a bonus appeal to another section of their base. Kind of win-win, kill two birds with one stone message. Only thing missing is working “Obamacare” into the situation though that’s probably been done as well.

A smart cynical GOP’er likes to spew racism through a dog-whistle, thankyouverymuch.

“I never saw any problems during the Jim Crow era” is like speaking through an amp.

I think Jindal is going to regret his association with this mess.

Palin, of course, will double down and never understand what’s wrong with this picture.

As a liberal who grew up in the South, I actually understand exactly what he’s trying to say.

There are many places in the South where there was no direct conflict between whites and blacks. In many areas, most of the whites are as poor as the blacks, like he said.

What he’s guilty of is assuming that because he didn’t participate in or see racism means those blacks didn’t experience it. It’s absurd and naive. He also never seemed to figure out why blacks wouldn’t talk about their conflicts with the white world in front of him, a white guy. Duh.

I think this is actually an example of his speaking out of innocent naivete, not racism. Still dumb. He’s old enough to know better, even if he didn’t see it firsthand as he claims.

Jindal definitely implied First Amendment violations when he used those words. Same with Cruz, he definitely knew what buttons he wanted to push by using the words “free society” and “police censorship”. There are a million proper ways to express disappointment if you believed Robertson shouldn’t be suspended that takes into account the fact that this isn’t a First Amendment issue and not one of them were used by these two.

No I don’t and I probably should have phrased it better. I’ll plead emotion on this one because I knew the first things some rabble rousing jackasses were gonna do is to conflate this with free speech and I was too mad to add in the proper caveats

I think you’re in the right thread.

Was a time politicians could be openly racist against blacks on the theory that there were more anti-black racist voters than black voters. With the rise of the religious right, some people think a similar principle works today with anti-gay noise.

No worries. Although the article you cited wasn’t the best example, I’ve flipped over to Fox News every so often to see what they are saying, and many, many people there are calling it a First Amendment issue, including former lawyers like Greta Van Susteren.

Megyn Kelly doubles down and says, "Every Significant Historical Figure Has Been White”. Quoted off the air, but with her mic still on. Faux News won’t fire her for this, but if she loses her looks - she’s gone.

I think Whitman could have mentioned King David, any Egyptian pharaoh or Genghis Khan and she still would have maintained her belief. Are there such things as faith based “facts”?

Here’s a good one: Jack Kingston (R-GA) thinks that kids who get free school lunches should be forced to work for them:

His subsequent defense of his stupidity? He never actually said that only “poor kids” should have to pay if they get subsidized lunches.

At this point, Republicans - at least the elected ones - are pretty much entirely fucking ignorant clowns.

Turns out http://www.freewoodpost.com/ is a satire site but you had me going for a while.

She’s been educated like most Americans. I’ve heard variations of this theme my entire life. During Open House once, my father asked why most of my 10th world history class was devoted to western European history with just side-mentions to other civilization. The teacher’s response was pretty much the same as Megyn Kelly’s. I’m sure Ms. Pinner is a big fan of Fox News.

I once had a college classmate inform me that most people in the world are white, and that Malcolm X was racist for daring to say otherwise. He was a dumbass freshman just as I was, and perhps I should give him a break. But he learned that shit from somewhere. I’m guessing the same place Megyn Kelly learned her “facts”.
