I love John McCain, and I loved the idea of picking another maverick to run with him in 2008, but holy crap, he could have realized she wasn’t up to snuff just by TALKING to her a little more. Katie Couric exposed her in the first two minutes. What exactly did McCain ask her at their interview?

It’s not losing, it’s the way he lost. Bush spread some pretty vicious rumors in 2000, but they had no lasting effect on McCain’s reputation. Obama actually did destroy McCain: he took McCain’s mantle of reformism, claimed it for himself, made McCain look like a Bush flunkie, and then didn’t even have the decency to govern as a reformer. If anyone has a right to be bitter, it’s John McCain.
As a matter of fact, put that under stupid liberal ideas: the very guy they wanted so badly as their VP candidate just four years earlier was just a Bush clone. Who knew?

He lost by tacking hard right and trying to minimize the depth and scariness of the recession. Obama pointed that out, darn him all to heck.
McCain abandoned his Mantle of Reformism* to try to win the nascent Tea Party/Wing-Nutter vote. Unfortunately in doing so, he pissed off a bunch of moderates and independents - people that otherwise might have considered him. The absolute idiocy of picking Palin just sealed the deal.
