Suggested viewing order for Dollhouse

I’m currently (re-)watching Dollhouse on Netflix, and have reached the end of season one. I had watched a goodly portion of Dollhouse during its original broadcast run. I’ve also convinced my brother to watch the show, and it’s all new to him.

I never got the DVDs, so I haven’t seen Epitaph One. I watched through until partway through season 2, when Fox started burning off the episodes two at a time. “There’s good news and bad news. The good news is you can now watch twice as much Dollhouse per week! The bad news is that the first episode of each pair airs an hour earlier than you’re used to, so you just missed an episode.”. I couldn’t follow what was happening after that missed episode, so I just threw my hands up and stopped watching altogether.

What would you folks suggest we do about Epitaph One? Should we watch it right after season one before continuing on to season two, or should we save it until the end?

(If for whatever reason you feel the need to post spoilers, please put them in a box. I’m kind of a stickler for avoiding spoilers.)

Watch Epitaph One. Season 2 was intended for viewers who knew what had gone on in epitaph one. Also, it’s amazingly good - far, far better than the rest of the series.

I made a topic a while back skeptical about Dollhouse, and while season 2 was not a favorite I find it pretty good once it really gets into gear. The episode where Topher has to face the consequences was really good, and it continues being good from there.

I would have liked more hard, hard questions being openly faced but eh. Like what does it mean to erase an imprint and wipe its memories, did they just kill a person? One that has probably changed over the few days its been imprinted?
Where do the imprints come from? Are they essentially mind downloads from real people?

Well, I followed ‘Season one, season two, Epitaph One, Epitaph Two’ more or less by accident - I was following the show from the cable airings, and didn’t feel any particular need to grab the box set or otherwise seek out Epitaph one before starting season two. (It wasn’t aired during the original run, though it was included on the DVD.)

In fact, I started a little bit of Epitaph Two off my DVR, then kinda went ‘WTF?’ and looked for a place that I could watch Epitaph One online.

But I don’t think that order impaired my appreciation of the rest of Season 2. Your mileage may vary.

Agreed - season 2 is a lot better, but the epitaphs are really excellent.

I think he imprints are either real people or real people with modifications; one of the characters is definitely based on a real person-

Dr Saunders is based on the original, male Dr Saunders that Alpha killed

and in one episode, Echo becomes overwhelmed by the ‘real’ person her character’s based on.

Ah - see it was broadcast along with the rest of the season in the UK. It was very confusing when we tuned in to episode 13; for a while we were convinced the station was broadcasting the wrong show.

Thanks for the feedback, folks. I probably would have saved Epitaph One for the end, but I’m now leaning toward watching it first.
