Superman and Lois Season 1

Not objecting to anything, just trying to provide an alternative viewpoint though I now see that I shouldn’t have made an issue of it.

Ok, sorry for the misunderstanding.

No, no, you fools! This is the INTERNET! We can’t have apologies, empathy, and understanding in fandom, it’s just not right!

Naw, really, I’m glad we got that sorted out. Can’t wait for the next episode. How many are supposed to be in this season, anyway?

It was announced as 15 episodes, but with COVID delays, I’m not sure how many episodes have been/are being actually produced.

For whatever’s it worth, Wikipedia currently has 10 episodes listed (seven that have aired and three in the pipeline).

Yes, 15 episodes is what I heard, too. The CW also announced August 17 as the date of the season finale. Since there are eight episodes left, but there are twelve weeks until the putative finale, that means we’re going to get another hiatus.

My understanding (which may be flawed) is that we had the interruption in episodes due to a covid outbreak on set, which brought everything a halt for a few weeks. Not sure how that will/won’t continue to affect things.

Have to say, all the actors, crew, etc. who have been working this past year to serve up new entertainment for the rest of us are probably another under-recognized group of workers. Keeping morale up for the rest of us, and giving us something other than bad news to think about, has sure helped MY sanity, I expect it has helped others as well.

S01E08 Holding the Wrench

REALITY - Clark encourages Lois to reach out for help after noticing her reaching a breaking point. Meanwhile, Jonathan finds himself in a dangerous situation. Lastly, Kyle encourages Sarah to audition for the musical revue at school.

This episode, more than any other so far, demonstrates why the show is called Superman & Lois. Bitsie Tulloch deserves an Emmy for her portrayal of an otherwise strong woman who still hasn’t processed her grief over losing a baby and is afraid of losing another child. Absolutely compelling stuff.

I’m beginning to think that Jonathan may not be getting any powers, or at least not until much further down the road. His team up with Lois was pretty good, until he started poking around on his own. He and Lois can support each other, being left on the sidelines holding the wrench.

Jordan got some fun time without angst-ing out even once. And he demonstrated another super-power: piano playing.

Finally, John Henry Irons doesn’t seem fully convinced that Superman isn’t going to turn evil on this world. But seems willing to go along with it for now mainly because (a) Lois is convinced of it and (b) General Lane has his Project 7734 pretty well developed.

[Does anyone else think that John Henry flew between worlds in his RV, Spaceballs-style?]

The “more on my plate helps me focus” is classic burying yourself in work to avoid dealing with a trauma. It can’t help that Lois isn’t able to fully discuss her issues with a head doc, because her husband being Superman is definitely a stress factor here. Also one of her boys developing superpowers and the other not but still needing to prove himself.

I’m glad they really addressed the whole ordinary human “in the orbit of” a person with superpowers.

I think Mr. Irons is starting to grasp while the people of this Earth look like the people of his Earth they really aren’t the same people, however similar they may be. Again, I have to wonder if Clark’s attachments to people make a difference between the two Supermen. If the Kryptonian sales pitch includes “you aren’t alone anymore” then a possible reply is “I have never been alone” because Clark has always been part of a human family, first with his parents, then with Lois and his sons

Naw, I think he took bits and pieces of his defunt ship and built them into an RV, but it is an amusing picture.

Some scattered thoughts on the latest episode:

I thought in the previous episode, it was mentioned that he died six months ago. Apparently I misheard/misremembered that, and it was six years ago. Also, he was a Specialist/E-4 (effectively a glorified Private), while I assumed he was an officer and aide to General Lane. And it really seems that if, as I speculated, he had died saving General Lane’s life, or General Lane knew him at all, that would have come out in this episode. So, I think that speculation is pretty well busted. Oh, well.

While I thought Lois’ actor did a really good job, I thought the scripting of the counselling session was really awkward at the start, with the script wanting to keep the audience in suspense about who Lois had blown up at, while there didn’t seem to be any reason in-character why she would be so coy about it.

Once, just once, I’d like a Superman to react to the “revelation” that the U.S. military/government has contingency plans to deal with him if he goes rogue* with a casual acceptance.

“I always thought you must have projects like this. I know how powerful I am. I know, better than anyone, how much of a potential danger I could be to everyone on Earth. Including your daughter. I don’t like it, but I understand why you feel the need for contingencies like this.”

Especially in a show like this, where Superman constantly being aware of having to earn the trust of ordinary humans is such a major character trait and plot point.

*or, y’know, defend the planet if other, less friendly Kryptonians ever show up, which is a thing that happens in almost all iterations.

Yeah. Evil!Kal-El couldn’t breach the ship; Clark could get into the RV with no problem.

I suspect it’ll turn out, in typical Arrowverse fashion, that Evil Kal was actually a good guy under some kind of mind control, that Clark gets hit with the same thing, but unlike his dopple he gets saved through the power of friends/family. Also, Edge probably doesn’t suspect he’s getting played by the X-Kryponians, and it’s more than hinted they’re sharing head space with aliens.

There’s also probably a subplot about Johnathan (and/or Lois) getting X-Kryptonite powers as well. It would feel too much a cheat for him to naturally have powers but they’re going to have it happen somehow.

I suspect they’ll keep John Henry Irons around if only because Wole Parks is really, really good but they have a natural out in having him suit up as Steel to go back to save his own universe/Superman and return for whatever guest shots and/or crossovers they’d like him for.

Yeah, it seems pretty clear that the X-K folks are not normal humans who have been given powers; they are people who have been possessed by Kryptonians whose powers and personalities are breaking through and erasing the humanity of the Edge’s victims. Too bad about Lana’s friend.

Lana’s friend? How about Lana’s husband. Morgan Edge has been recruiting Kyle to get zapped. If not Edge then Larr, which is the same difference.

One thing that is bothering me, because it tends to always bother me when it comes up, even though I understand why it’s done that way for Plot Reasons:

The 20 second delay between detecting an unauthorized user opening the weapons locker in the RV and the actual firing of the Death Rays. Hey, given the sort of war circumstances Irons came out of, and his need for security, why the 20 seconds combined with the lock-down? Just blast the intruder to atoms immediately, why wait?

Of course, then Jonathan would be dead and it becomes a different show. He has Plot Armor, I get that.

Still, in real life, or a more realistic show, I’d expect no AI warning and 20 seconds of shutters unrolling across the windows. Just >BLAM!<, no more intruders. Or !ZAP!

Lana’s friend has already been accepted to the program, so she’s toast. Kyle is a few steps further away, to allow more angst.

Lana also didn’t bring Kyle into the program as a way of protecting him - she’s already aware something hinky is going on. Because, let’s face it, if she had asked Edge to bring her husband into the program he would have.

It’s like those home security systems that sound an alarm and wait for you to enter a code before calling the cops. The delay was just the AI waiting for the intruder to enter the code, so to speak. Also, the AI is pretty stupid as well as blind. She kept calling John Henry “Captain Luthor” until he finally reprogrammed her. And she didn’t realize Clark was an intruder until he didn’t respond to her inquiries.

Yeah, Lana’s in a tough spot - Kyle really wants to be in the program, and Edge would be delighted to take him, and Lana can’t admit that she’s suspicious of Edge to either Kyle or Edge, so she’s lying to both sides and hoping they don’t ever get the chance to talk to each other.

Not so much stupid as very limited. The user interface is quite personable, but she’s really not that sophisticated when it comes to gatekeeping.

Also, Irons smashing her up in a prior episode is probably not helping her.
