Survivor 48

Well, that was a little disappointing. I tend to prefer when interesting people win and IMO, Kyle was pretty boring. I would have voted for Joe.

I didn’t really care if Kyle or Joe won. I’m just glad it wasn’t an Eva sweep, even though Jeff still made the aftershow all about her. Her pitch to win was literally “Vote for me because I’m autistic.”

I really wish they would go back to the real reunion with all the players so they were able to watch the show and see what really went on. This immediate after show is always so pointless and stupid.

I’m happy with the results. In my opinion, Joe didn’t do anything strategic. I’m sure he’s a great guy but to me, he kind of just bullied his way through the game. I think Kyle actually worked and strategized his way through the ranks. He started slacking through the last part but still… And I gotta give props to the jury for giving the money to a working NY attorney.

Amen, brother. I had had it with her. She did not have a good story other than, “I’m autistic”. I loved when Kamilla took the wind out of her sails re the Shauhine vote out.

Concur.

They’re probably going back to the live show for 50. Hopefully they’ll keep it afterwards.

Not to harp on this, but to show you how ‘limiting’ autism can be, here some folks with autism:
Michelangelo
Sir Isaac Newton
Jerry Seinfeld
Satoshi Tajiri (Creator of Pokémon)
Vincent van Gogh
Steven Spielberg
Alfred Hitchcock
Thomas Edison
Alexander Graham Bell
Benjamin Franklin
Henry Ford
Ludwig van Beethoven
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Bob Dylan
James Taylor
John Denver
Charles Darwin
Carl Jung
Samuel Clemens
George Orwell
Jane Austen
Charles M. Schulz

“Depiction” is the wrong word, because for reality TV shades of real, this was real. What we saw in Eva is (obviously) exactly what autism can look like. Someone who is successful, intelligent, and capable, who also has a can’t handle their own or other people’s emotions.

The most obvious recent example is the difference between Kamilla’s and Eva’s frustration with making fire. It’s not as simple as Eva being of weak character or something, but that her brain is saying that frustration and failure is an existential threat. She can’t do this, so she is going to die.

So autism may be a super power that lets her obsess over submarines (or whatever) and get a job with the Navy, but also means that she is going to react in different, and often counterproductive, ways to situations neurotypical people could just deal with.

Anyway, my my only real point is that when people want to know what autism looks like, a few outtakes from this season is a strong demonstration. (And not all autism looks the same, so this isn’t meant to dismiss other depictions.)

I know autism well, I have a couple of very close friends that have it. I’m not suggesting that she doesn’t have it, I was responding to the comment that she made it seem like she was deserving because she had autism. In my opinion that’s not a good enough reason to give her the million dollars.

But to be fair, that’s really all she had to offer. I give her credit for coat-tailing to the end, but that’s usually not a good enough strategy to win.

Yeah, I didn’t mean to suggest you were mischaracterizing or disbelieving of autism.

I thought she brought a bit more to it than that, because she was physically pretty capable, and did well with the puzzles. I do agree that judging the winner due to “my disability is the worst” would quickly devolve into inspiration porn. Telling her story without mentioning it could also be dismissive, so it can be a tough line to navigate. Glad I’m not the producer who has to make that call.

Yeah, I agree.

Love the discussion here, and I read these Survivor threads religiously even though I don’t participate much. But one thing that keeps coming up here & in other commentary–the underplaying of Kyle & Kamilla’s game specifically (but also Mitch & Shauhine).

On day 12 I would have said you’re absolutely right–Joe & Eva are a couple who are a threat to win the game, especially with the editing we got–you’d be absolutely idiotic not to vote them out when you get a shot. But every episode that went on since the David blindside it seemed clear to me that while Joe & Eva were very well liked as people they were not really seen as threats to win–meaning the remaining players were calculating that the jury was not going to over-credit a bunch of immunity wins or a duo playing safe from the top.

If that perception is true–then bringing Joe & Eva along was really like bringing along a goat you’re sure you can beat. More so, because the two of them would potentially split any votes for people who did respect their game.

And that’s exactly how the rest of them played the last week of Survivor–everyone wanted to be the 3rd person in the Joe & Eva tribal council, and for good reason as it turns out. If you could get there with even a modicum of strategy & the ability to state your case, any one of them clearly thought they had a pretty good shot at that.

But the reason it turned out that way was specifically because of the Kyle & Kamilla strategy special—telling Joe & Eva just what they needed to hear to bump out David, let Mary stay the course, Get rid of Shauhin, etc all while not overpromising himself to people he knew he would vote out and keeping the trust of the people he thought he could beat at the end.

I do think Kamilla could have very likely walked away with a unanimous vote, but she & Kyle both earned every step of the way. If Shauhine had made his move and survived I would have given him the edge over Joe & Eva every day.

Ultimately jury management and knowing these people you’re voting off well enough to know what they value is a huge part of strategy which I think is never shown well to us in editing. Backstabbing & big moves are flashy at tribal council, but I think Lawyer Kyle ended up with exactly the jury he needed to win in large part due to his own agency–this really felt like an old school season of Survivor to me in a lot of ways, and I say that as a compliment.

I thought that was a satisfying conclusion to a decent but not outstanding season.

And I freely admit I was wrong about Kyle’s chances against Joe and Eva. I thought he was wrong for voting out Mitch instead of Joe. I thought he was foolish for choosing Joe to sit in the final three. And both of those turned out to be exactly the right moves.

This is very true, as I was still worried the jury was going to hand the million to Joe. I thought Kyle did well at final TC, but that he could have made his case even more clearly and forcefully.

Obviously, we see an edited-down version of the proceedings, and it wasn’t enough to convince me that Kyle had won the jury over. Perhaps that’s intentional, to keep some drama when the votes are read.

A very memorable season for me, but I don’t think Kyle will stand out as a memorable winner for me.

I bet Joe and Eva both appear on Survivor 50. Maybe Mitch, too.

Also, Survivor fans should be aware:

Australian Survivor is starting a bonus season in about 3 weeks featuring:

Parvati

Cerie

Tony

In addition to many other great contestants from Australia and the rest of the world.

Just be aware. It is a very shortened season of 14(?) or so days. It’s how they got people to come back.

Where can an American watch Survivor Australia?

First time in a long while all three deserved to win. Everyone liked Eva. Joe was a challenge monster (out play!) But Kyle played a better strategic game- Outwit! He deserved his win.

And all three got a least one vote, there were not any “no hoper goats” dragged along just to make sure no one voted for them Those losers dont deserve even their third place reward.

I thought it was gonna come down to Eva vs Kyle. And Eva did get 2 votes and came in a solid 2nd. Challenge Monsters dont win the Million like in the old days, I just hoped Joe got at least one vote. The vote wasnt anti climatic as usual, no one got all the votes but one, as has happened to many times

Good player, not great. But he deserved the win.

Mitch was one of our faves, but he wasnt strategic at all.

Two things- Jeff- buy a thesaurus - I counted 15 times someone- mostly Jeff said “final” before the end of the last challenge.

And it is “final four and Final five” not final six, seven, eight ot final 17.

Next- please for the love of God dont make the reward people eat with the mud all over their hands and faces. It is disgusting. (yeah, there are plenty of chances for them to wash off a bit- there’s a boat ride, etc- at least their hands and faces- the producers simply deny them the chance).

I am glad Kyle won. In post game interviews, Kyle said that he thought a good chance of beating Joe/Eva in the Final Tribal, and that is why he never made a move against them. He was scared of Shahine.

and I agree that the producers should let the players rinse off before going off on a reward. Better yet, lets get rid of the challenges where the players get covered in mud. I don’t find it interesting. and early in the season, I can’t tell one player from another if they are covered in mud.

The guys really were bad on the jig saw puzzle part of the Final 5 challenge where Kamilla won (from last place). All three of the guys (Kyle, Joe and Mitch) looked totally lost while Kamilla powered through. All credit to her.

Maybe Eva is smart as whip with Physics, but I can imagine breaking down emotionally on a tough Physics exam. I would hate to be in the same room as her while taking an exam.

Well, at least do it less.

Yep. Eva was doing okay, but nowhere close to Kamilla.

Please, no more Eva. Now that we know who the real players are, we are rewatching the season. It’s very interesting. Kamilla stands out all along. Kyle does well as does Shauhine. If fact, had he stayed I think he could’ve done well.

But the rest is the Eva show. Sorry, but enough is enough.

Why not? One of the smartest players ever- and likable too. Obviously you dont like her.

You might not know that the MAGA people are hammering her on Social Media due to her autism.

Kind of interesting, if you plug these coordinates into Google, you can see several of the challenge areas used. If you zoom out to other islands, you can see where the camps are.
