Survivor 5/2/02: Pick 'em and poke fun at 'em

Nemo, loved your summary. It was spot on!

What a yawner. They really jerked my chain, got my hopes up that S/V would get their heads out of their butts near the end.

Biggest surprise was when S/V were the first 2 out in the immunity challenge, and we didn’t hear Johnny Cochrane mentioned.

I guess if I HAD to pick someone I wanted to win it all, I’d go with Rob or Kathy. Realistically, I guess either Kathy or Neleh.

It was nice to see the big dumb guy win a challenge for once.

Anyone else a little - uh - bothered by the affection between Paschal and Neleh? Pappy sure was the stud in the reward challenge, tho.

What the heck. Do judges in his part of the country eat nothing other than Krystal and Chick-fil-a?

Oh yeah, Johnny, the moment where Sean starts to channel Hunter was absolutely classic. Just how clueless can that guy be? I was ready for him to cap it off by calling Neleh a knucklehead.

And just how stupid is Neleh, anyway? That performance upon getting back to the camp was pathetic:

There are really only one player who deserves to win, and that’s Kathy. She hasn’t played the game exceptionally well, but she has consistently shaped her own destiny instead of letting the game carry her along. I could be happy seeing Robert win if he can pull off a new coalition next week, but I don’t think that’s going to happen because Vecepia seems happy to continue riding the Kathy train to the final rounds. Paschal has played well since the merge, but I don’t want another goody two-shoes to win Survivor. Everyone else is there through pure luck.

Pappy’s interest has nothing to do with daughterly feelings, did you see him put his hand on her thigh when they first got to the boat- Go Pappy ya dirty old man!

What the heck happened at the end on the vote? Sean finally figured it all out, and the correct strategy to defeat Neleh’s little power play and then they do not follow though? What the heck- Sean was all about badmouthing Neleh the second half of the show- did V get cold feet and refuse the deal (and hence recieved those 2 votes)?

Speaking of island romance- go Sean! He was all over V like a horny frat boy at last call. Still, doesn’t seem like he has perfect control over V. Hey she almost won something-- I was stunned. But the General pulled through in the end.

Neleh finally opened her mouth today-- BIG MISTAKE. Between that and the mint thing (and her obvious to the group pandering to Pascal) she should have gotten the boot last night.

Pascal wins something- shows the power of 2 reward challenges in a row (and he has the balls to complain about being hungry). Neleh continues her reign of incompetance in the challenges and finally gets called out on the slacking point (partial vindication for me- woo hoo).

Overall, a bit of a downer episode as way too much whining and no actual shark hunting. High spots were Sean’s intregue (soooooo close) and the General’s clutch performance. Watching Pappy convert that prior reward challenges extra food into a win was neat too. With the failure of Sean to get Neleh, the march to the final two continues for N-P unless Sean can get V-K-G to go after Neleh. I doubt that will happen (he has his chance) so either the General or Sean goes.

Sigh, just watching now for the little pleasures- like the look on V’s face when they dump her, and listening to Sean complain about someone else being lazy . . . .

Yeah, speaking of predictions, the real question is: How long until Pappy’s wife divorces the Nehleh-thigh-grabbing old fart?

And how do you think wifey will react when Pappy wants to invite Neleh to Georgia for a little reunion?

I think that’s exactly what happened. V has (foolishly, I think) pledged her allegiance to the P-N-K alliance, and will take Sean down with her. Robert’s toast next week, unless he wins immunity.

If that’s true- I will doubly enjoy the dumbfounded look on her face when they dump her 4th or 5th (depending if Sean has immunity). I guess the old saying about being able to fool some of the people all of the time is true. . . .

Poor Sean, by the time he finally got it V had already been fooled by Neleh-Pascal-Kathy. Oh well.

Well, I defended her, but I’ve never agreed with those who think she’s some kind of master strategist puppet master. I don’t believe she’s “playing” anybody. In fact she’s somewhat clueless about strategy, unless it hits her in the face, like after the coconut chopping fiasco. I just felt compelled to defend her from the charge of being completely undeserving. But yeah, that performance last night was pretty stupid.

I also think Paschal bringing her on the cruise in the first place was possibly a tactical mistake. Although I understand why he did it—he just reacted instinctively when told he could bring someone, and didn’t think it through. But he could have won some big time points by bringing Vecepia instead. Even though she is surely the most worthless of the whole group, except for Sara, it was her birthday, and picking her would have won a lot of goodwill from Sean. Plus avoiding rubbing everyone’s noses in his crush on Neleh, and preventing her princess performance pissing off the others.

I agree that V probably backed out of the deal Sean made at the last minute, which made R and T switch their votes to her. I can’t imagine any other reason they’d vote for her. Stupid, stupid V. If you’d thrown in with Tammy and Robert, you’d actually have a shot at winning this thing. Well, she still has an outside chance, but it’s all up to Kathy now.

Question on the reward challenge: Did Sean and Vecipia just quit? It seemed V decided she didn’t want to play, and that Sean’s attempts were half-hearted.

Another interesting moment in the show was when Jed and Ellie-May got back from the ship. Kathy says, “Don’t get too close because I stink!” and Neleh says somthing like, “I know. I might puke if I get too close.”

Oh, and the mint thing. WTF was she thinking?

Sean pretty much admitted that he could only sorta swim to save his life but not much beyond that. I think it was the same thing with V, some people just don’t dig water sports. IIRC, didn’t Gervaise have a similar issue back in S1?

She seemed pretty tight with Pascal and Neleh. I think its pretty much 3 v. 2 v. 1 right now. Unless the P/N/K troika gets broken up somehow, we’ve entered a preditable phase.

[sub]And I’ll miss Tammy . . . [/sub]

I agree, shelbo, but the question she should be asking is, who can she defeat in the final vote? It’s a pretty tough call, actually. It’s seems she was dislliked by lots of people, but does she realize it? Then again, jury members have cast votes in the past for people they personally disliked, but respected their survival abilities. She’s certainly the best forager, and a hard worker, so she could win that way against anybody left.

But if the jury votes for people they like, she’s screwed if she goes up against either Neleh or Paschal. She’d have a much better shot against Sean or, probably, Vecepia.

But then again, to further complicate things, there could be a backlash against her if she turns on her long-time allies…

Uh, please pretend that I wrote that third sentence, “It seems she was disliked…”

I think you’re right – but if I were Kathy, I’d stay with Neleh and Pascal – at least that way she’ll get to the final three. If she breaks up the troika, and votes off Neleh, she’d probably be the next to go.

I disagree. If he doesn’t win immunity, Robert should be the next to go. Once it’s down to Neleh, Paschal, Kathy, Vee & Sean, Kathy would be a fool not to join up with Sean and Vee and vote off either Neleh or Paschal first and then the other one next.

As much as Sean likes Pappy, I think Kathy could be very persuasive about the fact that if Sean keeps Pappy around because of loyalty, he’ll only be screwing himself out of the million bucks because he could never beat Paschal in a final two standoff.

Then it’s her, Sean and Vee in the final 3, and doesn’t she get to pick who she goes head-to-head with? Pick Sean and she wins the million, hands down. No matter how many people disliked her, everyone (except Paschal) still disliked Sean more.

I like Kathy and I hope she wins. I’ll be very, very, VERY angry if Sean or Vee walk away with that money. Ugh - it hurts just thinking about it.

I mean, if she wins that final immunity. And unless it’s something that requires the use of logic (ha ha), she’s already proven her stamina (by winning the raft challenge) and she also won the kite challenge, so she stands a pretty good chance at beating S&V, who’ve never won anything (save Sean who had to have a partner to help him win the one thing he did manage to pull off).

Anyway, the bottom line is that Kathy had better not be as dumb as S&V were last night and choose her alliance well next week.

Remember, the final immunity is traditionally standing with your hands on the idol. I think Kathy would kick both their butts at that one. Your scenario is exactly what I think is going to happen, and it’s why I think Kathy wins the game. Of course, those final few immunities could well throw a spanner into the works.

Quick question:
Why do they call Robert “The General”?

Myself, I kinda like Kathy. She’s obviously poor at the schmoozing skills that everyone else is using to cement alliances, but she’s scraping by on determination. Unlike most of the other contestants, she’s actually working for her survival. I also think she had a realistic chance on winning if she makes it to the final three. As minty green said, the last challenge is usually an endurance one and you know if Kathy grabs onto the idol, she’s not going to let go until she wins. At that point it would be a popularity contest between her and whoever is her pick for a partner and I think she has a shot. Assuming Robert gets voted off (as seems likely) none of the Gang of Four will be in the running so they won’t have any special loyalty to anyone left. I think they’ll be pissed at Sean for organizing the counter-alliance and Paschal and Neleh for sticking with it. So Kathy will probably pick up all four Gang votes. With that, Kathy’d only need one more vote to win and I think she could get it. Sean’ll remember Kathy was his first ally after Vecepia when he was in danger; Vecepia is closer to her than anyone besides Sean; Neleh and Paschal were both with her during the tribal crossover.

So my prediction is that if Kathy can make it to the final three, she could win it all.

Was that V falling off the palm tree last night? Was she seriously hurt? Is that the air-gasping event?

That was Sean slipping off the branch, and he appeared to catch himself. That’s a pretty lame excuse for drama, but this week’s show was also a pretty lame excuse for shark hunting (which is good, because I prefer most sharks to most survivors).

A speculation. Vecepia is obviosuly missing her family more than she anticipated. NotWithoutRage wrote that she’s going to find out her grandparent died while she was away. Maybe, she’ll decide the seperation isn’t worth the money and volunteer to get voted off next week.

On a seperate note, I thought of an interesting twist the producers could use to liven things up. Instead of having the pointless ability to hand off immunity (no one yet has come up with a realistic strategy where doing so would make sense) it would be interesting if it could be traded in for an extra vote. This would eliminate some of the ties, because whoever won the immunity could be in a position to break them. It would also put an entertaining strain on the alliances; the individual who won the immunity would be pressured by his or her allies to give up his or her own personal advantage for the sake of the alliance as a whole.
