I’m sad that Koror had to lose someone, but damn, did they fuck with Ulong or what? Goes to show you: Always. Have. A. Plan. B. Ready. Ahead. Of. Time. Because dollars to doughnuts, next week, they’ll wish they’d gotten rid of James and not Angie.
Do you get the feeling Burnett & Co. really, really don’t like Ulong? But, man, it’s clear they’re the biggest disaster as a tribe in the history of Survivor; they’re playing right now to eliminate each other before a merge. Not just inept, but none of the four actually seems to like anybody left on the tribe.
The Koror love tribe, at least, is beginning to show signs of wheeling-dealing and backstabbing fun. A threesome of Tom/Ian/Katie, Coby/Janu [and I suspect Caryn would side with Coby], and Greg/Jenn as a possible swing vote between the two factions. It’ll be interesting to see what sides the surviving Ulongers [if they haven’t been eaten yet by that shark flopping on Palau’s golden beaches] will try to play post-merge.

SPOILERS!
I didn’t notice the time, and I caught part of a spoiler. Fortunately, I caught it as I was going to the bottom of the thread, so I only saw which tribe lost someone.
Please think of us here on the Left Coast! Sometimes we don’t realise what time it is, and click on these threads. Survivor isn’t on for another hour!
The Good
–I’m so happy they didn’t have to do a useless immunity challenge. And I was wondering how they were going to have time for it all in the hour, so it was a decent way to get rid of a Koror.
–I love love loved the Korors choosing an Ulong for immunity. That was such a nasty twist! I’m surprised that more Korors didn’t choose Ibrehem, though. I would have just to screw with them. Unless they didn’t realize that Ibrehem was definitely the one being voted off. He obviously blew the challenge, but that’s not necessarily a death sentence.
–I loved the fact that we finally had a tie, and that they resolved it in a reasonable way. No longer will everybody cower in fear of the purple rock of death.
–The Coby/Gregg secret alliance is fabulous. What a great power play by Gregg. Nice that we’re seeing some Kororian strategery.
The Bad
–They didn’t show us the votes for Koror’s granting of immunity, and for the original Ulong vote. I’d really like to see those.
–I thought it was unneccessarily mean to make Ulong watch Koror eat. And Koror wasn’t too gracious about it. Boo!
–It’s clear that Tom is on everybody’s hit list as he’s too much of a threat. Oh well. We’ll enjoy him while we’ve got him.
The Ugly
–The ugly will come next week when the Ulongs have to go back to camp. Oh yeah, James in his undershorts. That’s ugly too.
The Big Question
–Did Willard give Coby his pants?
And random thoughts on each player
Willard: Gracious ending interview. I liked how he admitted that he thought he’d be stronger than he was. It seems like he just wasn’t an asset to the tribe. But he’s awfully well-built for an old dude.
Caryn: Why wasn’t her head on the chopping block? She’s snotty and weak. But it occurred to me that she might hide her snottiness from her tribemates to some degree, and she might well contribute more around the camp than we see. She’s obviously not doing big flashy jobs like hacking snakes to bits, but she might be keeping quite busy boiling water and preparing food, thus being considered an asset.
Janu: Janu is really beautiful, but she’s looking kind of haggard. I hope she’s okay, 'cause I like her.
Grenn: Giggle giggle giggle. Shut up. Like I said above, nice power play. He’s one to watch.
Coby: My opinion of Coby jumped quite a bit higher this episode. I’m not sure why, but I like him a whole lot better now.
Ian & Tom: Apollo and Poseidon strike again! I wonder if Tom really thought he was going to fade into the background, or if that was an attempt to be self-effacing.
Angie: Sorry to see her go. Not sorry to see her underpants go.
Ibrehem: Could he be more worthless? And snotttyyy at tribal council! Jerk. Can’t wait to see what happens next week.
James: I would have thought he would definitely be voted out once Ibrehem got immunity. Guess not. Not much airtime for him.
Bobby Jon: Poor Bobby Jon. He looks so sad! I like him more and more each week.
Stephenie: Woah! Dial down the intensity, there. I know you’re pissed about losing so much, but you’re in a decent position. If you keep getting so upset, I’m going to stop liking you.
Maybe because he’s playing the game, rather than just winning the challenges?
I don’t think Ibrehem was that snotty; he has rocked in all the challenges except this one (remember, he did push his opponent off the platform once last week, whereas James lost both times). This challenge was not for immunity. It was for stew and bread. That’s not worth getting voted off over.
I think so. Willard wasn’t carrying anything when he walked away. It looked to me like he left everything except the clothes he was wearing.
My husband commented about the stew:
“I bet it was stew alright. Stu Blah Blah, casting director for the last go round.”
Does anybody else think that Angie peed in her chili by bashing Ibrahem tonight? Of course she could never have seen his immunity coming, but I think if he hadn’t been planning to vote for her already she definitely swung his vote in the last count.
Coby’s a cute guy but damn- boy got some junk in the trunk.
James grates on my nerves with every syllable he utters. Henry Higgins would pull a Hannibal and personally bite out his larynx, plus he seems to be under the delusion that he’s a leader and an intellect (dude: ULANG needs to change its name to DONNER PARTY, get a clue- nobody’s leading them).
What do you think is ultimately responsible for the inequity in the tribes? Do you think that KOROR just got all of the bright people and ULANG the genetic flotsam, or that their campsite is worse, or the Dolphin Boy/Gregg Divinity theory or what?
I absolutely HATED this episode. I don’t like the fact that Koror had to jettison a player even though they won the competition. I hated the fact that the piggy Korors got to eat in front of the Ulongs. I despised the fact that the Korors got to mess with the Ulong plans to vote Ibrahim off the island. He deserved to go! He seemed to be pretty much a liability. And, most of all, I hate the fact that the stoopid, useless Ulongs voted off Angie! She and Stephenie are the lynchpins of that team. They’re toast now. Just pack up and leave, for Pete’s sake!
I enjoyedthe episode. But I agree with almost everything you said. (Their eating in front of Ulong didn’t bother me.)
Angie definitely deserved not to be voted off. She proved herself time and again in the challenges. Ulong are idiots.
I really regretted see Angie go. She’s probably the most interesting player on the series and she’s been playing well.
I think it wasn’t fair to force both tribes to vote off players. Especially when there were no immunities available to be won. Players like Willard should have at least some degree of control over their fate. But basically he was doomed from the moment Jeff said the rules to the challenge. The outcome was moot for him.
A more interesting idea would have been for the winning tribe (in this case Koror) to have voted a member out of their tribe over to the Ulongs. They still would have ditched Willard, but he’d at least be in the game and it would have given some small advantage to Ulong, which desperately needs it. And it would have been even more interesting if the Ulongs had won. Would some of them have campaigned to jump tribes?
Anyway here’s my review of the players:
Ibrahim - Finally made his mark. But in a really bad way.
James - Sinks deeper into denial. He doesn’t seem to realize he’s one of the main reasons his tribe has been losing.
Stephenie - In my opinion, made a mistake in going along with the Angie vote. She lost her closest ally and best teammate. But it probably wouldn’t have made any difference except to alienate her from the other three.
Bobby Jon - Not sinking as rapidly as Ibrahim or James, but he still needs to do something to change his luck. But I don’t sense a deep strategic ability in the man. Metaphorically, he’s going to keep running along the same road until he gets hit by a truck.
Ian - Had an uncharacteristically bad moment. The dolphins back home must have been laughing. But he recovered and his overall position’s still solid.
Tom - Still the man. But what about…
Gregg - He’s playing someone. But we don’t know who yet. But he appears to be channeling Rob Mariano and the other players are going to stomp him as soon as they see that.
Jen - And Amber II will go right down with him.
Coby - Still too early to tell. But he did say “this is where the game gets interesting” so everybody has to do a shot.
Janu - Seems to be fading away.
Caryn - Got lumped in with Willard. That should tell her where she fits in the tribal totem pole.
Katie - Didn’t get a Survivor buddy at all. Willard voted against her. Caryn hates her. She’s the outsider on her own alliance. And the other alliance she’s her as the most vulnerable target. Her only hope is that the more active players start directly fighting each other and miss her in the battle.
And yet most spoilers have her going to at least the final four and some the final two, with Ian.
I have to disagree with you here. Ibrehem was exactly right in Tribal Council last night: he did rock in the other challenges. (Well, about as much as it is possible for a Ulong to rock.) It’s funny how everyone forgot about how James was a target just the day before, and he was spared only because Kim proved herself more useless. James didn’t last as long as Ibe in the Hot Pursuit immunity challenge. James was “in charge” for the Build A Better Outhouse reward challenge. James got whomped - TWICE! - in the Sumo At See immunity challenge. All challenges the Ulongs lost. But yet Ibe was the target, and Angie was voted out? That’s crap, and it just goes to show that Ulong is completely disorganized and desperate. They couldn’t win with Ibe, who has shown himself to be fairly strong, both of mind and of heart. What makes them think they would win without him? (Which makes the votes against Bobby Jon even more stupid and senseless, but whatever. These guys are up the creek without a paddle - and without a damn boat.)
I said earlier that Ulong should have had a Plan B to take with them to TC, just in case. I was wrong. They should have had a Plan A.
Snotty? I didn’t see that at all. I think he made a solid argument, and had every right to be on the defensive.
The guy doesn’t seem to be worthless. He just messed up on this challenge. What has James done? Didn’t he back out kinda early in the carry-heavy-bags-around-the-track challenge? Didn’t he get knocked out not once but twice by Coby? Didn’t he build a losing bathroom? Wasn’t he instrumental in leading them in a wild goosechase through the dark, snake-infested jungle? Doesn’t he look awful in his underwear? He should have been voted off, not Angie or Ibe.
I’m starting to root for the Ulongs. Nothing against Kuror, but my heart always goes out to the underdogs. Plus Tom and Ian are sitting too pretty. I like when everyone on this show is in some degree of discomfort and dilemma, and those two look like they’re on vacation.
Actually, Ibrehem didn’t do so hot in the Ep2 IC, where they were dragging the crates along the sea floor, for much the same reason he sucked at this episode’s RC: guy can’t hold his breath. [Of course, all the other Ulosers besides BJ and Steph were useless in that challenge] I do agree with the general premise, though, that Ulong is a disorganized, backstabbing tribe and Ibe a bad choice to vote out; this is a team where everyone left is desperately praying for a switch or merge, and all know now they have no one they can trust on the tribe.
Which reminds me. Best line of the night, spoken by Probst at Ulong TC, when Bobby Jon explains that they brought everything with them because they never know what’s going to happen: “Oh, there’s no merge.” Heheheheheh. I felt completely evil, laughing at that, but evil in a good way. Awesome-evil.
Probst was a real dickhead at TC. I know it’s editing but he really likes to stir it up. I was sad to see Angie go.
Not only did he walk off with his pants on, he walked off wearing Coby’s pink shirt!
I’m beginning to suspect you and I have entirely too much in common–I laughed so hard I hurt myself.
Coby and Gregg are getting sneaky. While I have to look down on any plan that puts my darling Ian in jeopardy, I can’t deny it’s a smart move on their part.
I’m entirely pissed that Angie got voted off. I really thought that Kuror would use the following logic–give immunity to the ostensibly weakest person in the tribe, thereby weakening the tribe as a whole. While the five remaining members of Ulong were all far from weak, Angie would have been my pick for immunity. Of course, maybe the Kurors just felt sorry for the Ulongs and kept Ibrahem around for his strength. Or possibly because they could see he caused friction in the camp. That’s evil. I like it.
I also liked Coby’s suggestion that they try not to rub in the fact that they got to eat in front of Ulong. Of course, it didn’t go down so well because they were all so excited to see the food, but it was a good idea at the time.
They kind of had to, or merge. Otherwise, it’d be four against nine. The bigger tribe would have to sit five people out for the two challenges next week, and they wouldn’t be able to sit the same person out two challenges in a row, so that’s a little tricky…
As it is, they have to do something of the same sort next week now that it’s 4:8. If the Little Tribe that Couldn’t loses again, it’ll be 3:8, and the bigger tribe will have to vote off two people just because they haven’t lost any yet. Well, except for Willard.
Hey, did it look like Angie walked off with the sewing kit?
