Survivor: Palau - 5/12 - "It Could All Backfire"

Well, that depends on who wins endurance. (This is assuming Jenn is an easy first part boot) After tonight, I do think Ian is stupid enough to take Tom to F2 with him. And Tom wants to bring someone along with him to F2 that he can say to the jury “this man is here because of me. I dragged him the whole game.” Reward me for getting the both of us past all of you.

So you like your chicks vapid and bleached?

I assume everyone is aware the next episode (and season finale) will be this Sunday and not next Thursday?

Well, this is my first time replying to a Survivor thread (I guess in my head I like to think that I only watch the show because my girlfriend makes me), but this was a very… interesting episode.

Am I the only one that thinks it actually worked out really well for Ian? Tom’s still got his back even while they booted off Tom’s closest ally. Plus, given the 4-1 nature of the vote, I get the feeling that this was all planned before TC, as opposed to Caryn’s meltdown triggering it.

Plus, Tom’s save during the Council (pinning the blame for booting Gregg on Caryn, and maybe partially deflecting Katie’s anger as well) probably prevented anything from really “sticking” to Ian as fallout. Now it seems like it plays out in two possible ways:

  1. Jenn goes first on Sunday. Then Ian is in a plum situation: If he wins immunity, he’s set. If Katie wins (yeah right), she’ll probably take him over Tom. If Tom wins immunity, there’s still a chance he takes Ian, and it’s even better if Caryn isn’t around at the last three. (So that’s pretty much the best Ian could hope for at the final 3).

  2. Tom goes first. That seems to be what the previews are hinting, although I suspect that’s just a red herring. In that case, Ian is up for immunity against Jenn and Katie. That’s about as close to a sure bet as could be, unless he was up against Caryn and Katie. But that wouldn’t have worked, because with Caryn still in the game, Tom doesn’t go in this position. Again, this is about as good an outcome as Ian could hope for (although woe betide him if he loses the last immunity).

I think it’s highly unlikely that Ian or Katie goes first on Sunday (that is, I think they both make the final 3). If Tom doesn’t win immunity, he’s either the biggest threat and gets booted, or his alliance with Ian holds and Jenn gets booted. If Tom does win immunity, then Ian and Katie’s alliance (as well as Tom and Ian’s alliance) means that Jenn will probably get booted.

I haven’t really thought about how the jury members will be affected by today’s events, but as far as Ian’s chances of getting to the final 2, I can’t imagine how he could have been in a better situation than he is now.

I must admit, as a postscript, that I am unabashedly rooting for Ian (although not for the same reasons that many in the Ian fanclub seem to be). I think his rather contradictory combination of strategy and deviousness coupled with a complete inability to lie makes for entertaining television (and should make for a hell of a final TC).

Congratulations to Burnett and company for reviving Survivor. If we get a really good speech at the final tribal council, this season will trump even season one.

I understand why Ian went after the car. It wasn’t a car; it was a Shiny Red Corvette Convertible. There is scarcely a penis bearing human on earth who can resist the SRCC.

Jenn turned out to be an amazing player. She clung to Greg like the emperor’s concubine, and then immediately adapted to the new reality. Very smooth.

The jury is now very interesting. I believe that they were all sympathetic to Caryn last night. They believed her. Based on the jury, I think that both Tom and Ian are at a grave disadvantage for the final two. Even Katie might win against one of them, since Caryn painted her as a sympathetic figure used by them last night. I agree with MilTan that the vote was already worked out before Caryn’s speech.

Again, kudos to the staff and crew. This season has been an object lesson in how to infuse new life into an old classic.

Oh my Og, I almost expected Ian to pee on himself when he fell on his back and demonstrated the ultimate puppy submissive pose! I think one of the first meals Katie had was Ian’s balls, ‘cause Sweet Geek sure ain’t sportin’ a pair right now! And then she had the nerve to make me watch her get wrapped up in the Nerd Hug that rockle, Draelin and I are supposed to have! (By the way, girls, given our height differences, I think we can all gather within those lo-o-ong arms together and warm up a different part - I get clavicle!) There were a whole lotta shots of that crocodile last night - I’m pretty sure that was Katie’s croc tears. There were a lot of nature shots, too - the ants all over the scorpion was the girls going after the guys, I think.

And has anybody ever made it to the final four with less screen time than Jenn? I think last night was only the third time I’ve heard her really speak in confessional- the first being “I want a shower” and the second “glad I could share this with my sister”. I think she’ll be the first to go Sunday, and I never got to know her. Is she so quiet that they couldn’t coerce anything out of her at confessionals? She seems pretty sharp - why so very UTR?

Goddam Katie’s gonna get $100 grand just by being the load everybody wants to haul into the final two. I predict Ian settling for third place and a new car, and Tom getting the mil 7-0.

And didn’t it seem like they never showed us the “Best view on Palau”? I guess it was because they were gobsmacked like Tom at Ian’s total lack of game. I’ve never seen anybody look so glum being whisked off to a reward - Tom was pissed! If Caryn (and how did everyone know how to spell that name?) hadn’t had verbal diarrhea, I wonder if it would’ve turned out a lot differently…

They showed the view. It was foothills, jungle, and ocean.

Well, for the record, there is scarcely a penis-loving human on Earth who can resist the penis-bearer in the SRCC (provided he has all his own teeth and hair – no toupées!). I am a sucker for a muscle car, their environmental impact notwithstanding. I just wish more of them (SRCC’s) had back seats. So, Ian’s lost his balls, and his mind, but he won the Corvette. Bless his little heart.

So … does everyone else think that the Final Tribal Council on Sunday night is going to be gruesome? I can picture Coby, Janu, Steph, and Caryn going a little bit crazybanananuts and asking the “ign’ant” questions. (BTW, I used to like Coby, but the “bitter drama queen” look [and looks] is so unbecoming of a man of a certain age … say, over twelve years old.) Gregg will probably be reasonable – and he’s the one person in the game who actually got blindsided.

I did. As soon as I saw them, I said, “Hey! Amazing Race Rafts!” :stuck_out_tongue:

I agree with singular1:

I think this is exactly what will happen. Jenn will be the first to go on Sunday, and then Tom will take Katie to the Final Two.

I get the impression that Coby really doesn’t like Tom. As such, anyone going up against him in F2 will get at least one vote.

While I’m posting, is there any chance we can tone down the Katie hatred a little please guys? I’m no fan of hers either, but there have been moments in the past few threads that have seemed really ugly to me, and I’m not getting nearly as much enjoyment out of them as earlier in the season.

A great episode, revealing much.

I hadn’t realized before last week how devoted to Katie Ian was. When Katie was slamming him, why didn’t he just say? “Katie, tell me the truth. Were you, Gregg and Jenn plotting to get to the Final Three?” For all her flaws, when confronted, Katie has told the truth. I’m really sick of her taking the high moral ground v. Ian when she has flip flopped more than a walrus in heat.

I really do think that Katie, Caryn and Jenn missed a golden opportunity to get rid of the men. It was Katie and Jenn’s best chance for making it farther in the game. And Caryn could hardly have done worse than having EVERYONE vote against her. Ian and Tom have been absolutely dominating the challenges. They’d better hope for another one of Burnett’s lame “put your hand down in the hole and retrieve the key” challenges that favors the women.

Though, to be fair, I do believe the most recent challenges have favored men.

Final Four will be very interesting. Looks like Tom and Jenn are going to pair off against Ian and Katie. Frankly, I’d put my money on the former because Jenn has been doing fairly well in challenges vs. Katie.

Definitely. I think that there’s the potential for Caryn to outdo Sue from season 1. (Heresy, I know, I know…) It’s gonna be good!

I don’t doubt it. The woman’s a civil rights lawyer, and if last night’s performance is any indicator, she’s going to have a bunch to say. Fabulous.

I was surprised The Car wasn’t the typical GM Uglycar. The Corvette is nice. Nevertheless, I’d sell the money and put it toward a Porsche.

rockle: I have all of my teeth and all of my hair. But I prefer lithe European cars to American muscle cars.

What kind of lithe European cars? My Malibu Barbie Dream Car is – no kidding – a 1973 MG convertible with chrome spoke wheels in British racing green. My mother-in-law used to have one, and it was always my dream that my husband and I would be able to buy it off her for cheap (it was in terrible shape, people just DO NOT appreciate their cars!) and restore it. Alas, my husband is more interested in rebuilding computers than cars. Who wants to take a spin in a Dell with the top down?

But anyway … I also like Jaguars. And Audis. I myself drive a Volkswagen. It think it’s quite sexy, in a cute Jetta sort of way.

I was positive the Car was going to be that butt-ugly pickup truck they’ve been showing on all the commercials, pulling a bootlegger turn and backing up the ramp.

Tom’s endurance hasn’t been tested yet; all the endurance tests he’s won, he’s won by everybody else getting bribed off. Good freakin’ luck winning final immunity, guys.

Agreed re: Ian pulling the stupidest move of somebody who made it to final four. Still at least the third-stupidest move, but dang.

Judging from the number of “Naughty Housewife” webcam sites, plenty of people are taking their Dell out on the Information Superhighway topless…

My first car was a 1966 MGB that my mom bought new and gave to me in high school. It wasn’t running by that time, but we got it fixed. The MGB I have in restoration is a '66, and it’s being restored to duplicate the one my mom gave me: Old English White with a red leather interior. BRG was my second colour choice. I like it better than OEW, but I wanted to replicate my first car. And it was originally OEW anyway.

I’ve had three MGBs, not including the one being restored, a Porsche 924 (Rally Yellow, then Guards Red after I put a 944 body kit on it) and a Porsche 911SC coupé (white). I’m also picking up a red '63 Triumph Herald convertible next week.

If I had lots of money to spend on a car, I’d get a dark metallic blue Porsche Turbo. (I’d keep the MGB, of course.) If I really had a lot of money to spend on cars, I’d get the Porsche and also a silver Aston-Martin Vanquish.

Last night’s episode was so bizarre. I had no idea at all before the final vote was read that Caryn was the one going. I hoped, yes…but everyone was so confused. There was backstabbing…there were rumors flying and secrets being told, alliances being shattered. It was a great episode.
I was appalled at Ian’s weird behavior when he and Katie were off talking. That was possibly the most disturbing thing I’ve seen this season. That was a leetle bit crazy.

Caryn is an absolute idiot. The only reason she made it so far is that she is malleable, apparently by anyone and everyone, combined with the fact that Ulong was so terrible. Now, if the tribes had ended up differently, and Koror had been forced to vote off some people earlier on, I think Caryn would have been out sooner as would Ian. The boy couldn’t lie to save his own damned life. He couldn’t play poker with someone who was blind and deaf.
I also thought that it was extremely dumb of Caryn to go off like that at tribal counsel. I don’t think she was trying to get booted, it seemed that she was trying hard to turn Katie so they could take the guys. I wonder if maybe there wasn’t anything planned with Jenn, but she figured out that Caryn’s outburst meant she would be gone and so she voted with the guys so that Ian couldn’t come back later and say she voted for him. I was a little more impressed with her last night. She was the only girl that even had a chance at winning the reward or immunity challenges.
When I saw Caryn running to the boys the minute they got back from the reward, my eyes rolled so far back into my head that I almost didn’t see the rest of the show. Honestly, as the show went on and her comments to people as well as her comments to the camera were played I was in disbelief that she could be an attorney. She has no strategy at all! I’m not sure she could think her way out of a cereal box. I think Tom realized that Caryn was too much of a loose cannon. Yes, she wanted to cling to him but she showed him one too many times that she was perfectly willing to flip sides the minute he wasn’t looking. She’s obviously never heard of “playing it close to the chest”.

Yeah, she has a habit of singing like a canary. She did it when the women attempted an alliance to boot Tom, and she did it again when TomIan went on their RC getaway. And she did it again when she met TomIan on the beach.
