I’ve been watching Crazy Ex Girlfriend and one of the quirks of the show is that the main character perceives a lot of conversations as song and dance numbers like she’s living in a musical. In one, 2 of her ex boyfriends sing about how they “tapped that ass all over this house.” Does that expression always mean anal or is it a hyperbolic term that encompasses normal sexual activity?
I’ve never known it to specifically mean anal. It just means someone you desire carnally. Or maybe I’ve been interpreting (and saying) it wrong all these years…

It doesn’t have anything to do with anal sex specifically. It just means you want to screw them in general (not with the simple machine though). It is similar to the saying “a real piece of ass” that isn’t very PC but has been around for a very long time. It doesn’t have much to do with portions of the glutious maximus. It just means that someone is hot (which likewise has nothing to do with a fever). It is just slang.
IME, it means sex in general. Like “rumpy pumpy”…

Like the “people want to be offended” thread, people get upset over the word “normal.” Just because something isn’t normal doesn’t mean it’s bad! Too many people take it to mean that, though.
I prefer the definition of “normal” as “perpendicular to, orthogonal, measured along an entirely different dimension”.
If you look at the definition of the word Tap, I could humorously see why it became a euphemism for sex.

Actually, my answer pertains more to the expression “I’d like to tap that ass” or “I’d tap that ass” rather than specifically the “tap that ass” part. The phrase “I tapped that ass,” as I’ve always understood it, simply means “yeah, I engaged in sexual shenanigans with that person.” No specific implications of anal.
