TAR 11/3: Choir Boy At Heart

Sigh. No thread - must be CBS’s fault for delaying it so long.

Taxi Assessment:

Stuck in the Desert and Officially Detained - or, Philiminated with extreme prejudice.
Hoskote & Naina and Rowan & Shane and Chester & Ephraim and Brandon & Adam - Already eliminated.
Tim & Danny (down from “Stopping”) - Tim & Danny never really came close to competing for first place, and now they never will. I sympathize with Tim - the Roadblock was painfully difficult for someone who’s not used to singing, or familiar with sheet music or foreign words. And though you can improve with enough coaching and practice (as Tim did), that just takes time, and time was what Tim & Danny didn’t have enough of.

Flat Tire - or, not likely to get anywhere soon.
Ally & Ashley (down from “Stopping”) - Ally & Ashley are just looking (comparitively) weaker and weaker as the weeks go on. They did fairly well at the Detour, but just tanked at the Roadblock. Now, my comments above about the painful difficulty of the Roadblock still hold, but Ally & Ashley not only have never come close to compting for first, they’ve never finished out of the bottom half, coming in sixth, seventh, seventh, seventh, seventh, and sixth this week. So they haven’t exactly excelled at anything, and aren’t likely to start anytime soon.

Stopping for Gas - or, not broken-down, exactly, but not a good sign.
Nicky & Kim (up from “Flat Tire”) - This was a good episode for Nicky & Kim, who finished in second for the first time, and actually completed all tasks with relative ease. I’m still skeptical of their stamina and ability to last through the end of the race (they themselves even admitted they did well on this leg because it wasn’t physical), but I do think they deserve a bump in the rankings.

“Rapido! Por Favor?” - or, making meaningless ineffectual comments from the back seat, but in no immediate danger.
Leo & Jamal (holding steady) - This was actually a pretty good leg for Leo & Jamal, who were comfortably ahead of most teams throughout the race. They did have the weird “we didn’t U-Turn the beards” comment, which they justified because they could “get ahead” because of something-something crazy logic. No one believed them anyway, so I don’t think it matters, but still.
Tim & Marie (holding steady) - I don’t particularly care about Taxigate III or whatever, but I think this kind of underscores this team’s (well, Marie’s…) lack of forethought - they know they’re well ahead, so they don’t actually need that taxi, and there’s no surer way to earn other teams’s enmity than to pull something that’s within the rules, but unsportsmanlike that affects other teams. TAR isn’t an alliance-driven game, but throwing away the chance to get a little locational tip from another team (like when you forget to pick up part of the clue, Marie) for a meaningless few minute additional lead over the trailing teams is just dumb.

In the Passing Lane - or, ahead of the pack, but not quite comfortably.
Jason & Amy (holding steady) - A miss on the Fast Forward for them - I hesitate to call it a mistake, because the Fast Forward is always chancy, but still a potentially disastrous issue. Still, they recover nicely, and easily slide into fourth place.

Cruisin’ with Earl - or, drivin’ on the shoulder, takin’ shortcuts, and generally kickin’ butt.
Travis & Nicole (holding steady) - First place again, with Travis showing some unexpected skills. Plus they have the Express Pass. It will take some major mistake to keep them out of the final three.

Pinky and NoBrain stealing J’Amy’s taxi wasn’t just rude, it was stupid. They gained nothing by doing it. All they did was paint an ever bigger target on their back. Pinky is mean for meanness sake, no redeeming qualities.

And then trying to concoct a story that the afghanimals stole it. Yeah, Marie is just despicable.

As I said in the Season thread …

Anyway, that was one of the funniest and most humiliating challenges yet. I’m really surprised no one chose – or switched to – building a chandelier.
Another unusual thing this season: They started out with five M/M pairings, and four of them were among the first five teams out.

Oh, zut, I’m so glad you started this thread. I was just saying in the season thread that I’m just coming off Hell Week from work, and I fell asleep before the episode began and woke up in the middle of it. Then I fell asleep again and missed the ending. The only thing I remember is someone warbling with the Vienna Boys Choir, and now I think it was Tim. Oh god, that was painful.

Yeah, I’m blaming the late start to the football game. Here TAR didn’t start until after 9PM.

The argument still the mat in front of Phil and the greeter…uncomfortable. I thought the whole episode was a meh.( although I love Wien ).

If the rule is that you can take any cab no physically occupied by another teams stuff, then I’m fine with it.

It is up to each team to decide how “nice” they want to be within the rules but I don’t understand getting upset by teams working within those. I do understand the other team in this case being upset since they had valid reason to assume they’d been tampered with against the rules.

What I wonder is if the driver who took their bags out ever got paid by them. if so, leaving your bags in a cab where the driver has already been paid seems like a really bad idea (actually, considering the fickleness of various cab drivers the world over even if he is waiting to get paid it seems like a bad idea when you have no idea how long it will be before you return).

Editing doesn’t really show how much time was being spent rehearsing for the singing but if it was as long as implied, as soon as I knew it was not going to go well, and knowing the Fast Forward was still in play (since all times were simultaneously at the task) I’d probably have made a play for that.

The singing challenge was a Roadblock - you had to do it. The mask challenge was the Detour with the chandelier as an alternate.

D’oh!
Ignore the idiot in the corner…

Pinky is so annoying because she meanness doesn’t accomplish anything besides piss off the other racers. Has all her scheming actually helped them achieve anything?

And I was surprised at how few people even seemed to consider going for the Fast Forward. It seemed like two teams started for it, one dropped out quickly after they figured out they were behind the other team, and only one team really seriously tried to do it. Why so little interest?

The Power Parents were reluctant at first because of the “Weather Dependent” clause. As for other teams, whenever two teams rush off for a Fast Forward ahead of you, what chance do you really have of getting there and doing it before them?

Her facility at lying is scarily impressive. When the taxi driver appeared to question his decision, Pinky waved the roadblock card at him and quickly said something like “See it’s blue, we’re all blue, all the same team”.

The speed at which she conceived and executed this completely believable lie was impressive, seems like she’s had some practice at it.

Especially because this Fast Forward required no skill whatsoever, and was solely based on who got there first and took the card for the first jump. In years past, the Fast Forward would actually be a task they had to do where one team could do it better & quicker than the one in front. Then it would actually be a fun race to watch. The way they do the Fast Forwards now is incredibly boring since almost every single time as soon as one team says they are going for it, no one else even bothers to try and just hands that one team first place.

I was surprised that giving the Tom Waits treatment to Franz Schubert actually worked.

There was a competitive one a few season ago, something about hay bailing or something. If I remember correctly, the asshole marine guy and his put-upon wife beat out a pair of strapping young males in that physical FFWD to take the leg, and went on to not only win the entire race but also set a record for most legs won.

My problem with the Fast Forward was that except for the extremely rare person who simply can’t overcome a fear of heights, there was no ability to fail. If you got there second you lost. And knowing that half of Fast Forwards are like that is probably why I’d likely never go for one unless I was 100% certain I’d get there first.

The Africa Water Ski FF was the last one I saw that had some “skill” needed to complete it.

I know it was impractical from a production perspective, but I really miss the days when there was a FF on every leg and you could only do one during the whole race.

We were in Vienna in the spring and I was so excited to watch this leg and see them at Schonbrunne. Running up that hill to the pitstop was great. Even walking up that hill was brutal. I’m really glad that they kept everyone outside, Schonbrunne is amazing but the thought of all those racers crashing around makes my heart stop.

I hope that after they finished checking in they were able to stop at the cafe in the Gloriette.

A few years ago, I got to go to Germany for three months for work. My mom was visiting Europe with a tour group at the same time, so we met up in Vienna one weekend. On Sunday morning, her group was going to Summer Palace and I wanted to see the Science and Technical Museum. So I walked her to her tour bus, and then I took the subway. The museum was near the Schonbrunn stop. When I got there I saw a palace, figured I’d wait a couple minutes, and her bus pulled right up.
