Texting on a First Date: Kosher or no?

My husband does this too! He also will stop movies while he takes a call, leaving me with the wonders of a paused screen for entertainment.

I used to get annoyed until I realized it was just the way his family is. At dinner my mil will interrupt the family prayer to take a call from a neighbor about plants. While everyone else remains at the table holding hands and staring at the cooling food…and while I remain in contact with the slimy, grime covered hand of one of my nieces or nephews.

So, yeah, clearly I am too cantankerous to be okay with someone texting a lot while on a first date.

When someone is in my office at work and answers a cellphone call, I politely ask them to “Get the fuck out of my office!” Yeah, I’m loads of fun at work!

And my fave is when we are out at a restaurant with my 80-yr-old MIL, and she’ll pull out her phone and start scrolling through menus. Sorry if we can’t sufficiently entertain you for an hour or 2 every couple of months, and I’m glad you could squeeze us into your crowded social calendar! At least she’ll die soon - which we cannot hope for the younger offenders… :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, you can always hope.

Mm. Not for me. Personally, I’d find it more rude for someone to just let the stupid thing keep ringing–disturbing not just me but everyone around us–than answer it–ignoring me but hopefully not bothering anyone else.

Or… surreptitiously encourage?

BTW, I hope those who can’t live without texting have short commutes. Anyone texting while driving should have their license yanked. I’m against capital punishment, but I’ll make an exception for second offenses for Texting while Driving. There are fewer nitwits phoning while driving in California, but still a few who you can identify by their excellent imitation of a drunk driver. There are still things more important than being in touch every second.

I’ve been Blackberry tied for a decade, and iPhone tied for a year. I’ve handled a Global IT infrastructure as a technical lead where I’ve been on call 24x365. I’ve done the 2am phone call followed by the drive or dial in to fix something many times. My husband’s job is worse. I’m saying this cause I get the texting for work thing.

It had better be a goddamned emergency - I can think of two in my life and four in my husband’s that would have kept me texting/emailing/or on the phone for a short period during a date and would not involve an “I’m very sorry, I must leave right now.” And fewer things in my personal life (children being high on the list) that would have had me interrupting and not leaving.

But I’m an old fogey.
