Pretty funny comic, but if you jumbled any of the strips in with any of The Far Side, I wouldn’t be able to tell them apart.
Rip off? Homage? Coincidence? Anybody else like this comic?

I never heard of it but, looking it up, looks like I’ll have some reading to do later tonight. Stuff seemed pretty funny, but, as you say, very Far Side in approach. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Definitely inspired by Larson. The problem is that AS isn’t nearly as consistently funny as Far Side was. That comic style without fairly consistent funny can just be awkward and annoying far too much of the time.
See, for example, May 17. I have no idea what’s going on there.
I get it. “Holy Cow”, “Holy Toledo” and “Holy Shit”. But it demonstrates what’s wrong with AS compared to Far Side…it’s not that funny. Larson would have gone with a variation of the humorous blending of Pope/Catholic and Bear/Shit in the woods (and actually did use the bear shitting in the woods trope once), and it would have been freaking HILARIOUS.
This is…flat. Very flat. I “get” it. I just don’t think it’s worth more than a momentary chuckle. And I think that I wouldn’t find that as annoying as I do if the style weren’t so obviously Larsonesque. And I don’t really know if that’s fair to Hilburn, but I can’t help it.
And “Holy Smokes.”
