Any SDopers have the secret for perfect Rice Krispie treats every time? Even with the freshest marshmallows, they often come out like bricks (or rocks). Anyway to prevent this? - Jinx
I’m not a Rice Krispie Treat fan, so take that into account.
I hunted recipes and in one it said not to substitute for butter. Then in another someone commented:
Maybe you are not using enough butter or too many marshmellows.
[sup]My first reaction was to wonder if your Rice Krispies were fresh not stale.[/sup]
In any case, if they turn out hard again just grab a glass of milk and start dunking.
I’ve never had a problem with hard-as-rock Rice Krispie squares.
I use the recipie from the box, for the most part.
I melt my marshmallows in the microwave, and always add the vanilla. Oh, and I use margarine, not butter.
Sometimes I’ll add some peanut butter too, which makes them even softer, so maybe it is a butter/margarine kinda thing.
Maybe it’s just the altitude…
I’d suggest turning down the heat when you’re melting the marshmallows - if you cook it too high you’ll turn all that sugar into candy.
Cooking threads do best in Cafe Society, so I’ll move this thread over that way
