Actually, I think their time-saver choice makes sense, given that the fab four are such ‘renaissance geek dillettantes’ - they have so many other things that they were interested in. For truly hard-core comic book geeks, yes, home-made would be a must.

I’m not as clear on what the contest rules would be for a neighborhood comic book shop - maybe Stuart thought that he’d get more people participating, and more sales in the costume department, if they didn’t disqualify store-bought outfits.

Besides, I don’t think it was only meant as a punchline that they expected to win just by showing up with a real girl.

Although, in the Halloween episode where they all showed up as The Flash, they made a couple references about “To the sewing machines!”, implying that they make their own costumes.

One of the competing Justice Leagues should have had Craig Ferguson as their Aquaman in a non-speaking cameo.

Stuart doesn’t have to disqualify store-bought outfits. However, in any decent costume contest, the homemade costumes should be given preference over anything that’s obviously store-bought.
