I noticed that nobody mentioned the Cleveland show yet, so I guess I will.
To be upfront, I wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about this show. It was not something II particularly cared about. Moreover, it honestly sounds like they would remove the least interesting character from the original and then made up a whole new completely unrelated story about him, which would captured precisely none of the humor of the original but all its crassness and annoying aspects.
Well, call it a premonition because . I didn’t enjoy the Family Guy season opener hugely. (As I said in other thread, it had some really nice bits, but was grossly uneven and wore on me greatly. And McFarlane has some issues.) But it’s watchable. Cleveland… well, I find nothing interesting about any of the characters. We have Cleveland Jr who put on about hundred pounds before puberty. We have his new girl whose name I didn’t bother to remember. Her kid is a lame copy of Stewie, and considering how overdone they’ve gotten with Stewie, that’s saying something.
There’s the bear, which I guess was supposed to be funny, but I can’t imagine how. Yes, the bear is an immigrant. Ye-huh, that’s… uhh… comedy. Or something. I mean, seriously, what are they going to do with that. That wouldn’t be but a ten-second sight gag on Fg, but here he apparent;y a major character.
Has Arianna Huffington ever done cartoon work before? She’s got a great voice but was barely* used last night. Can’t say I’ll ever watch it again, but might if there’s ever an episode emphasizing her character…
I noticed there was no thread for the premiere episode of The Cleveland Show, so here goes.
All summer I’ve been wondering how they could give Cleveland his own show. He’s a decent enough character, but he’s clearly a background player. Better to support than star. But I have to admit the first episode wasn’t terrible and I could see this turning into a good show. But I did notice that they made Cleveland a little more aggressive here and Cleveland Jr. has been mutated into some weird blob-like thing.
But in all honestly, the show clearly needs to be centered around Tim the Bear, he’s awesome.
To me it feels like they took all the talent they had in the first 3 seasons of family guy and spread it out on 3 now somewhat weak series. The true enemy are the tv executives imo. They wanted to cancel a truly great show, which family guy was back then. And now when it is mediocre they can’t get enough. Also they cancelled Firefly and Arrested Development. Idiots.
I saw an “early release” of this months back and it was really bad. I thought for sure that Seth MacFarlane was going to spin Cleveland off to make it sort of a parody of the Obamas.
At least that might have been funny. Actually since no one is using that, someone should do that. After all we did have “Carter Country” didn’t we
My opinion must not mean shit because I thought Family Guy sucked after it came back and wouldn’t last long. Then I thought American Dad was a travesty and would be put out of its misery after a few episodes. The Cleveland Show looks so awful I won’t waste a minute of my time on it. It’ll probably win Emmys.
Dunno what happened to Cleveland Jr, I guess they just needed a fat guy. Seems a lot of Family Guy to me, only with less cutaways (and I’d be surprised if they lasted too much longer cuz American Dad had them for a bit)
My question is why is this in HD, and Family Guy isn’t?
I don’t think I laughed once. Quagmire or even Joe would’ve been far better characters to base a show on. Heck, I’d be happy if Brian and Stewie got a spin-off. If Cleveland lasts longer than The PJs, I’ll be quite surprised.
Yea, I was kind of thinking ‘The Cleaveland Show’ would be some sort of meta-joke or something, since it was so obviously a terrible idea, and I figured McFarlene would realize that. Plus, even if it was a good idea, there are already two McFarlene shows already on Fox that are basically variations of the same thing, I like Family Guy and American Dad is alright, but it’s hard to see people watching a third iteration of the same idea.
But looks like The Cleveland Show is just what it sounded like, weird.
I didn’t think it was bad, not fantastic, but not bad either. One thing I would criticize is that there are too many goofy voices. Cleveland’s voice is kind of goofy, but that voice surrounded by Cleveland, Jr.'s wheezy, dopey voice and the bear’s voice is just a bit too much.
