The Donald Trump 2024 Campaign Thread (Primary Edition)

One thing I think we haven’t discussed in sufficient detail is WHY the campaign is so low key. I have many thoughts, and the internet has far more, but I think it’s worthy of discussion.

Personally, I think he declared for two main reasons, 1) thinking it might help him dodge some of the storm of lawsuits headed his way and 2) it would make EVERYTHING ABOUT HIM AGAIN.

And both of those have failed miserably. The legal boots just keep coming down, and people are just not interested in him right now. Especially those that he depends on for his energy, the folks at Fox news. Instead they just kept talking about the Georgia run-off, McCarthy, DeSantis, and other people. Combine that with how he isn’t getting the love or attention he needs at home (even he realizes his elder sons are a bunch of drooling hyenas, and Ivanka says she loves him but doesn’t return his calls or visit!) and he just isn’t motivated to go out there and DO things.

AND, at some level, I think the fact that he isn’t liked as much anymore is slowly starting to percolate through his orange frosted head… the one thing he seemed to like about being a politician was going out and being adored by thousands, tens of thousands, the most people EVER but all reports indicate that each event since mid 2020 have been more thinly populated. Sure, he wants their money, but he is likely protecting himself from seeing it in a way he cannot ignore.

So he’s sulking at home, and letting people come to him, which of course suits his ego just fine, until it backfires like Ye theoretically inviting HIM, DJT, to be a VP.

This is not to say the election still isn’t his to claim (if he can be bothered) or spoil (if he feels snubbed). I’ve said in other forums, that if he pivots off the ‘stolen election’ and back to weaponized hate, he’ll likely snatch back all the glory and cow his competition. With legitimate (for R) concerns on the border, he could point to his accomplishments there, several sections of improved border wall that was “only held back by the evil D in congress”, whip up the hate, and point at (more or less legitimate) failures on Biden’s government on changing the situation.

Hate sells for Trump. And it would bypass DeSantis’ plane to MV stunt as well. Combine it with any of his other best sellers (Hunter, cover ups) and how none of this Ukraine (and high gas prices/inflation) would have happened if HE’D been in charge, and his numbers would skyrocket.

Of course, that would mean he’d have to leave his comfy hole in the mud, and might have to give up on how terribly wronged he was in 2020. Thankfully (?) his ego doesn’t seem to let him let go of that fact.

Fun theories about why he hasn’t campaigned I’ve seen on the net though:

4D Chess

“Q/China/Putin/Pillow-head is going to reveal X next month/after new congress is seated/in two weeks which will blow open everything and that’s when Trump will make his move!”

Wishful thinking

“Trump is actually very ill / dying / too old to go out there but is concealing it from everyone!”

Transactional

“Trump is waiting for DeSantis or one of the others to buy him out - this is his opening bid, and he’ll walk away from the election if the funds and/or promise of a pardon are delivered.”

Conspiratorial

“Trump is waiting on orders from Putin - who is waiting to see how winter plays out with his war. Once Putin decides, Trump will jump!”

And on and on and on.

I’ll stick to his petulance and self-absorption for now, since it seems the easiest and most consistent with his behavior to date, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the transactional one above plays into it as well.

I’m certain the Powers That Be are very intentionally depriving him of media oxygen as we speak. Murdoch has already made it quite clear he’s no longer going to invest in or promote the Trump brand and is moving on. Any increase in eyeballs on TFG going forward will depend on other sources; social media like Truth Social, or perhaps fringier far right news outlets. Neither have anywhere near the juice that Twitter or Fox provided in reaching the truly national audience enjoyed in the past.

I think this is possible AND it will never occur to him that it’s because of anything he has done, is doing, or is. If people don’t like him anymore, it’s THEM, not HIM, i.e., they’re losers, crazy, always hated him, have it in for him, are jealous, are beneath his notice, don’t matter anyway–who needs 'em! blahblahblah.

He is utterly incapable of any self-awareness.

This was a post on FB this morning by someone that used to be fully onboard the MAGA-train:

Trump might’ve finally shot himself in the foot. But you are correct: He’ll never connect the dots or blame himself.

Oh yes, absolutely. It is never his fault. Ever. Which is why he keeps flailing away at the blame game.

I think you mean ‘introspection’ for he is entirely too self-aware. His mind is like that New Yorker cover except it doesn’t reach even as far as 9th Avenue, never mind the Hudson River – he lives entirely inside his own skull.

I love that cover!

Nice to see that at least some of them have limits, albeit ridiculous limits.

Politico article about Trump and anti-Semitism. Bottom line: conservatives holding at least some anti-Semitic views are his people, his voters, and he won’t do anything to alienate them, like criticising somehow who says good things about Hitler.

The artlcle also makes the scary point that anti-semitic views are on the rise generally, and particularly among younger conservative voters:

A 1987 study of conservative Christians found that few “consciously use their deeply-held Christian faith and conviction as justification for anti-Semitic views of Jews.” But, diving deeper, there were troubling signs. The survey found that 49 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds agreed with at least one antisemitic characterization, compared to 34 percent of those 55 and over.

I do too. And I think everyone thinks that way. I sure do. It’s hard - no, impossible - to accurately perceive things you have no experience with.

Of course, for most people that experience extends at least beyond your own person

With all due respect Good Sir, I hardly think a study from 35 years ago has any relevance to today. The “good” news if any is the 18-34 demographic they cite is now 53-69 and their 55+ demographic is now age 90+. And therefore 80+% dead.

I live in St Louis, and I can certainly attest that I often feel it’s just NYC, LA…and sometimes, Chicago, that are part of the USA. At least when we are playing the Cubs in baseball, we seem get some recognition! Hence, the reason Chicago is on the list, for me, that is.

Governor Sununu doesn’t think much of Trump’s campaign:

In a wide-ranging interview, Chris Sununu, the New Hampshire governor, called the Republican presidential primary a tossup. As for Trump? “He’s not clearing the field.”

I think he just called Trump a minor planet.

I talked upthread about all the ‘whys’ Trump’s new campaign is barely moving, but IMHO again, the longer he goes without doing anything other that the periodic twuths about witch hunts and steals, the less chance he has of seizing any attention.

Which is probably equally obvious to those around him, or those who are dependent upon him (like the jackal-spawn…). Which intensifies the various internal ‘why isn’t he’ questions.

IMHO it’s a simple matter of it being a year and eleven months until the 2024 election. The sorts of things than need doing at this stage of a campaign aren’t the highly visible stuff that we expect to see a few months out from the election. I’ll believe Trump is out of it when it’s official.

Yeah we’ve heard that sort of thing before and look where it got us…

At my suckmydickdonnie email address I got this from his nibs begging for money. If I hurried I could get this… special wrapping paper. I threw up in my mouth a little.

That’s real? Not a photoshop? Not accusing you, it’s just too weird to almost be believed.

I hope it’s real and I hope there’s a WarnerMedia lawyer with a spare hour or two.

Apparently, there’s a supply of Trump wrapping papers available through various sources.
