Starting the thread early in anticipation of the musical crossover, which airs tonight.
From the little segment that we’ve already seen on Supergirl, a couple of questions already occur to me. Is the Music Meister from Earth-38? If so, how does he know about Earth-1 and the Flash?
I think this is going to be very much a bottle episode, with little reference to what’s going on in the wider Berlantiverse. Although rumor has it that the ending is going to set up the rest of the season for The Flash.
I suspect he might be a Fifth Dimensional Imp…he has a similar style to Mxyzptlk.
Not quite the episode I was expecting…could have used more songs.
Not having known Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist had been on Glee, I was impressed with how well they sang. Jeremy Jordan and Carlos Valdes, too. Though the last song wasn’t well suited to Gustin’s vocal range, IMO.
Jesse L Martin has gotten to show off his voice before, so he wasn’t a surprise.
Victor Garber was kind of the weakest singer of the episode, but he certainly wasn’t bad.
And, of course they couldn’t do an Arrowverse musical without giving John Barrowman a part.
Was a cute story. Closed up the two breakups a bit faster than I’d have expected, but hey.
Well…the musical Flash/Supergirl was not all that I hoped for. It did have its merits though. The guest stars were cool as well as the supporting cast singers. The “Dads” was a nice touch. “Super friends” was cute. The final love ballad was genuinely great. But it needed more original and plot advancing songs. And the plotting was a bit weak, despite attempts at lamp shading. Take a refresher from Buffy and try an encore! #supergirl#flash#superfriends
When two time* Tony nominee Victor Garber is your weak link, you’re doing pretty well.
“More I Cannot Wish You” is a much, much better song when it’s a trio by three people who can sing than when it’s the song that never ends and drags down the second act of Guys and Dolls.
“Super Friends” was a cute song & it suited Barry and Kara really well.
I liked it. I’d love to see them sing again.
*he’s actually been nominated 4 times, but only twice for musicals.
I didn’t think Barry and Kara would be resolving their personal problems in this episode. Although with the principals involved being in similar places in their respective relationships, I should have expected it. Also, it’s the CW.
So the Music Meister is some sort of transdimensional cupid-fanboy-shipper. I like that they didn’t fully explain what the frak he is. Some things just don’t need explaining. Is he going to keep watching over Kara and Barry? Since he just chose to disappear, there’s a promise of more musicals to come.
“Super Friends” was written by Rachel Bloom, of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and “Fuck Me, Ray Bradbury” fame. She tailored the song really, really well.
Yeah, he reminded me of Batmite as portrayed in Batman: The Brave and the Bold - genuinely fond of the main characters, but likely to cause them real problems with his appreciative antics.
I wanted to see Barry try to explain to “Diggsy Foss” (Joe West) who he was to Barry in the “real world” - “You’re the guy who raised me like a son - also I want to marry your daughter”.
I liked what little there was. I wish they’d coordinate the crossovers a little more. Just like in the Dominiators crossover, a 30 seconds setup on Supergirl doesn’t help.
I’d have appreciated cutting about 15 minutes of the crappy Winn/Alien Chick drama and about cut 5 more minutes of Mon/Kara/Parents, so we had 20 more minutes for crossover stuff.
I forgot to mention my two biggest disappointments with this episode:
No villain solo. When you’ve got Darren Criss in your musical episode, you really should give him a solo musical number.
The lack of colorful New York accents. Only Jeremy Jordan and Candice Patton made the attempt. ‘Cuz dey should be tawkin’ loik dose old toim gangstas, see?
What we got was pretty good, though. Plus a lot more speedster action than what I was expecting. I think Music Meister is also a Kid Flash fanboy, and he wanted the latter to get his confidence back.
I was glad to see Music Mxlpleister give the cowardly Wally his courage back, too, so we don’t have two or three episodes drawn out of Wally having performance anxiety.
It was disappointing to me, but I guess I didn’t like most of the music. The second song with the production number was the only one that was really good and as it was “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” it made me think of Scrooged, which is a good thing. I love "Moon River" but it was not a particularly great version by any means. Melissa Benoist has a very nice voice but her version lost the soul, the sadness, the wistfulness that Audrey gave the song.
I really did not like the other music, maybe I’m getting too old.
Not a great episode in my opinion. All of the songs seemed overproduced, which made them all lip-synchy looking. It didn’t look like anyone was actually singing to me, which I guess is what they did in Glee, but I didn’t watch that show either. I can’t understand why they thought singing Moon River would be a great first song to kick off the musical portion. The villain was kind of toothless for all the calamity he was causing – he crossed worlds to show two heroes love? I did think that the Super Friends song was cute and it had a great line where Flash says “It wasn’t about gender, I just really want to kick the door down.”
My favorite part was the “More I Cannot Wish You” trio. (And I thought Victor Garber sang it the best.) But the “Superfriend” song has been my earworm all day.
I’m kind of surprised Mon El didn’t want to go after Music Meister himself, but he would recognize J’onn was more powerful, and he (Mon El) didn’t want to leave Kara.
I really like Musicals. I really Like Flash and Supergirl. I liked every crossover thus far but this episode just felt half baked to me. It was missing something and I’m not sure what.
Outside of the musical, my favorite part of this episode was Vibe, Kid Flash, and Manhunter combining their powers to take down Music Meister. That’s what I’ve been wanting out of these crossovers.
I was kinda disappointed, too. I was expecting a Glee episode, but only two of the songs even had choreography, and only one of them would qualify as a production number.
Admittedly, though, it was a kick-ass production number.
And who knew that Cisco and Wynn (can’t be bothered to look up their real names) were better singers than Benoist even?! I was incredibly impressed.
Is Barrowman a regular or semiregular on Flash? I ask 'cause I’m a fan but have only ever seen him in the Whoverse.
