The fuckers gassed a dog...

No…just from the entire “they’re just animals” arguement. That’s sinking pretty low.

I think ratty said it best:

But that’s not true at all.

When’s the last time you erected a shrine and brought flowers to the mosquito you squished onto your leg?

Do you weep every time you eat a hamburger?

Do you only wear cotten and sweep the ground before you walk?

Would you refuse a life-saving operation out of respect for the animals who died to test the instruments?

Saying that every death of every creature is a tragedy is just silly. I’m an animal lover myself, and I certainly don’t approve of wanton killing for no reason–but I recognize the fact that in order for me to live in the manner to which I am accustomed, a certain number of animals are going to lose their lives. We aren’t fuzzy little bunny rabbits frolicking in the sun. We’re (mostly) omnivores, we’re industrialists, we’re scientists, and we’re consumers. Pull your heads out of the sand, people.

Most people when they see a new baby that isn’t their relative:

Cute kid, got lots of hair doesn’t he?

Most people when they see a puppy of any kind no matter whos it is:

ohhhhhhhh he is soooooo cute ::Slather slather:: I want one!!! oohhh you got the puppy breath don’t you? You lil munchkin stinker, ummm ohhhh yes you are a darling aren’t you…
Well you get the picture. Doesn’t mean that we humans love each other less, just means that most people/americans have evolved a special spot in their hearts for dogs, cats and other lesser creatures.

I’d prefer the kid, myself.

Belladonna, part of my disagreement with you was that your original post seemed to be equating shelter workers with Al Qaeda, in that both kill animals; I agree that shelter workers are not the ones that should be blamed for the millions of “euthanasias” that happen in the US every year because of irresponsible animal breeding.

My other problem, though, is with comparing the instantaneous, painless death of a Fatal Plus injection to the convulsing death caused by nerve gas. One is the best death we can offer to an animal; the other is torture.

Ethically, I know that the dog who died by nerve gas may overall have lived a better life than your average hog in North Carolina. That doesn’t mean I’m going to be happy about watching footage of the gassed dog. It’s an emotional, visceral reaction, and I ain’t apologizing for it.

Al Qaeda in Iraq?

Gassing innocent puppies?

Is the government so desperate to turn the tide of popular opinion towards leveling Iraq that they’ve stooped to this?

I wonder how long they were sitting on that tape.

It’ll be interesting to what results the ‘puppy card’ yields.

I also agree that if you aren’t a vegitarian, you should probably shut up.

Um, what the fuck? If you don’t condemn the death of every animal everywhere, you have no right to an opinion on the death, by whatever means, of any animal anywhere? That’s an…er, interesting opinion…

I find it slightly hypocritical to shoot Whopper chunks through your nose in disbelief in reaction to what Al Qaeda did.

But thats just me.

Well, as far as that goes, I agree with you. I don’t think gassing the dog is any worse than anything else they’ve done, or any worse than what scientists in many countries do, including the US.

But to say that one can’t deplore the gassing of a dog for chemical weapons research if one accepts the relatively humane killing of cows and chickens for meat is just plain silly.

I’ll agree to that.

About the video death of the dog, I’m leaning towards the idea that the video is fake.

Others agree with you, airdisc. I have yet to see the video, but just having heard about it, my every synapse is screaming “fake! Bullshit PR move to get the American people outraged enough to support a war!”

Just a question for the US people. Reports here said that CNN found the tapes and was refusing to hand them over to the government for analysis until it had aired those portions it wished to make public (can anyone say “Zapruder”?). Can anyone confirm the validity of thsoe reports?

“Reports” from whom?

CNN is trying to stampede Americans into war?

Do I catch a whiff of bizarre conspiracy theory?

My WAG is not that the puppy tape is fake, but more that it was some old tape from years ago that has resurfaced and happens to be nice propaganda for the current situation.

Here’s a link to an article (a slavering, somewhat hysterical article, but still) dealing with the possibility that the tape was faked.

The article (and some comments) make plenty of good points.

The longer all of this goes on, and the more I see our government not only NOT tying up any loose ends, but apparently hell-bent on starting a war on yet ANOTHER front…makes it really damned easy for me to believe that TPTB would have had no qualms about faking a tape like this to elicit precisely the reaction it’s gotten: KILL ALL OF THE EVIL PUPPY-MURDERERS!!

The “death crate” stories are far more horrific, but I’ve seen a lot more publicity re: the puppy video (until this week’s “Newsweek” came out, anyhow). I’m starting to feel like a bug-eyes conspiracy nut, but I really do feel as though the publicity the puppy video has gotten (OUR ENEMIES) vs. the death crates (OUR ALLIES) is really really fucking suspicious.

1 puppy = elicits more sympathy from Americans than 500+ people.

1 puppy who died relatively quickly vs. 500+ people who died of asphyxiation and fluid loss over a period of several days.

Yeah, there IS something fucked going on, and dollars to doughnuts none of US is ever going to be privy to it…particularly since the only media who would have the power to get to the bottom of the story are in the government’s back pocket.

I love America, and I love being an American, but I really really really fucking hate the shit the government is pulling right now. And what I hate the most is that there’s nothing I can do about it.

</frothing at mouth>

Oh crap, and I just now bother to notice that Max Torque posted that exact same link well before I did.

I stand by my incoherent frothings, though. I mean, as much as one CAN…

Yet again, the conspiricy theorists are out in force. I think there is not hope in fighting ignorance.

Speaking only for myself Zuma, I would hardly describe my post above as being out of the realm of possibilty.

YMMV

Do believe everything you see on teevee?
