I for one don’t want to see a CGI Leia in Episode IX. But they can’t just ignore her either (Lando et al were not even mentioned in VII, but I don’t think they can do that to Leia)
It depends of what her role in VIII is (and what her planned role in IX was/is – not sure how far the storyline/script even is).
Could they have her die off-screen and have it mean something? Like sacrificing herself to save others?
It won’t be hard to have her die sorta on-screen – just have her on a spaceship, and the ship blows up. They could probably strategically mine the footage they already have to give her a poignant last moment on screen.
Note that Ingvild Deila (who’s 29) was playing a young Leia. If they wanted to use her for old Leia, too, they’d need to age her (digitally or using makeup). Though of course, they could also just use an older actress. It’s probably not too hard for a Hollywood studio to find an actor who looks like any particular given person.
I’m hoping that the plot of ep vii already had her dying. Yes, she was signed up for the last ep too but perhaps it was just a credit for flashbacks or something.
Leia is too important for an off screen death (with two minutes of reminiscence, really?), CGI alone isn’t good enough for significant onscreen time and another actress would be hideous. I can’t see them doing that - there’d be uproar. They’d lose loads of money (I wouldn’t go and see it and I wouldn’t be unusual in that) and the replacement actress would have to spend the rest of her life hiding from enraged superfans.
If she wasn’t killed off in ep viii, maybe they can reedit it so that she is, or use some extra footage plus CGI in ep ix. I don’t think it’d be easy but I’m hopeful they’ll find a way.
Huh? Alderaan wasn’t destroyed in the prequels.
Doh, just realised what you meant - thought you were doing a Jar Jar impersonation. I don’t think a planet where she spent about two hours after her birth counts as her home planet. Especially since it’s not a planet.

Users can edit the topic lines of their posts for 5 minutes afterwards, just like the rest of a post, but just changing the topic line of the OP doesn’t change the title of the thread, which only moderators can do. Since the OP obviously intended to fix the typo, I fixed it for the thread, too.
It’s her head with archival footage of Carrie Fisher’s face mapped her own. I really don’t want to see her getting the Peter Cushing treatment and recasting Leia would be even worse.
I would be really surprised if they try to keep Leia in the ‘present’ series of movies past Episode VIII (which she’s already filmed scenes for), and I’d be willing to bet money they’re going to edit the movie to have her die or leave. If they do any other ‘past’ movies they might put her in, but that feels really different than continuing the story with a CGIed dead actor.
Maybe get Sissy Spaceck to play Leia? (Referring to the fact that she almost played the role originally while Carrie Fisher was considered for ‘Carrie’)
I know that Deila’s image was heavily computer-processed for the movie, but she does bear a resemblance to Fisher, which probably made the process a lot easier/more effective.
I wonder about that. Her face is the same shape, but her eyes are different (colour and shape) and she has an overbite. All it would need for a match is a gentle adjustment, which in theory should be possible without digitally replacing her entire head. I am curious whether they did that or not, and if they may give it another tweak before the DVD release.
Yeh, I only have my one viewing of Rogue One to reference, but it’d be my guess they did a full CG head replacement, using Ingvild’s face for motion capture.
If they wanted to recast (yuck) they should take the easy route and have Leia take back up her Boushh the bounty hunter identity from Jedi. Could be anyone under that mask.
My advanced apologies for the tastelessness about to follow, but I found all the face-tightening efforts on display in The Force Awakens more than a little distracting. I wouldn’t mind a re-cast if it means making for the best possible story.
