I was quite underwhelmed by the CGI Tarkin, the tech isn’t up to more than a brief flash, IMHO. I’d prefer a hologramed Leia if see doesn’t die nobly in viii.

I wonder if the plan was to have Han die in VII, Luke in VIII (like Yoda or Obi-Wan did), and Leia in IX, with her role being to defeat or otherwise solve the Kylo Ren* situation with motherly affection. If so, they could maybe swap Luke with Leia in reshoots for VIII. It would be less prosaic, but not by a huge margin.
I have no inside info, it’s purely my own speculation based on trilogy story structure. For all I know no other major characters are slated to die.
*I read something recently that suggested he’s Ben Organa, due to the royal lineage, and not Ben Solo. I like that idea.
Unless they plan to make the same story over and over again or stick to the same time period the death of Fisher is irrelevant, as would be the death of Ford, Hamill, etc.
I would like it to be heroic - have her ram her ship into an attacker as a last-ditch effort to save the fleet - sort of like Kirk’s father did in Abrams reboot of Star trek.
Or some other self-sacrifical heroism - or better still, something that appears futile and pointless, and is only discoverd to have been heroic later on.
Pretty much saying the same thing:
They might cut scene(s) from VIII and put it in IX
Redeeming Kylo Ren in IX would echo VI, but I’m hoping VIII and IX don’t retread V and VI (like VII retreaded IV )
(I actually like VII a lot and didn’t mind some retreading, but I think it went too far)

The makers of the films don’t seem to agree with you. They have this odd opinion that writing out a major character is quite a big deal.
Seems like this is what they’ve been doing for quite a while now. Beat that dead horse till its nothin’ but dust.
Who needs an original, fresh idea?
I figure they’ll edit VIII so that Ren kills Leia as his ultimate dark side action, either that or that’s how they will start IX. Similar to the Han scene but maybe with more torture to really sell the evil. It would certainly make the movie that they do it in the darkest of them all but I’m not sure how they’d pull a redemption story out of killing your father and torturing your mother. Maybe discovering that he has a sister?
I’d personally find a CGI-zombified Carrie Fisher tasteless and far too soon after her death.
Movieweb repeats what I have heard (either there or elsewhere). The 2 big scenes with Leia are (spoiling even though I think it is rumor) her reunion with Luke, and her confronting Kylo Ren http://movieweb.com/star-wars-9-carrie-fisher-no-digital-cg-leia/

How about Meryl Streep?
Lucasfilm has officially stated that there are no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia or General Organa.
That’s the same thing N9IWP quoted in post #50.
So it is. Of course, I gave the actual source link.
I meant to post the link to the official announcement (though the link I posted DID have a link)
Cynics may state that they didn’t say “We will never CGI Leia”, just that there are no current plans.
