The Golden Globes Watchalong thread. Anyone interested?

Did anyone really get upset with Gervais? I don’t think he went too far at all.

Eighty posts and nothing about Robert DeNiro’s embarrassingly-awful CBdM award acceptance speech? I get that the guy isn’t the smoothest public speaker when left to his own devices, but whoever wrote that speech should have his union card revoked. Jokes about deporting the wait staff- what is this, 1962? I would have preferred the entire speech to be “um, thank you very much, this means a lot to me. Thanks.”

Worst moment of the night.

I’m surprised none of the presenters took a shot back. For example:

How about a hand for our host, Ricky Gervais. Or, as we refer to him him in Hollywood, Dick.

Making cutting remarks about people we respect is a sign of genuine affection, which is why you won’t hear anyone say bad things about Ricky.

Hosting an awards show is a thankless job, as I am sure Ricky will find out.

Thanks Ricky, what a great job hosting. I can’t wait until next year when Steve Carrell does it even better.

Well, Ricky evidently knew exactly what he was doing:

I don’t think there’s any doubt that the man lived up to his word.

Loved Gervais’ public anal rape of Depp, Willis, Travolta (who in particularly enjoy it!) and co… Brilliant!

No need to take the piss out of Yanks; they’re giving it away! :stuck_out_tongue:

Not bad. Better than Bruce Vilanch, that’s for sure.

I’m surprised with the reaction that people are having to Gervais. I thought he was pretty funny, and not particularly out of line. Certainly it was along the lines of what I was expecting from him.

Too many gorgeous frocks to mention, but as far as ugly go its a tie between heidi Llum & Helena Bonham Carter. (I’m not watching the show but I have looked at pictures online)

I didn’t see most of the speeches, but I saw Natalie Portman’s - at one point I think she was talking about what her dog had for breakfast that morning. Keyboard cat - play her off!

Helena Bonham Carter was looking loonier than usual, and that’s something for her. The colours last night obviously were the peach/pink/beige pastels and jade green. Interesting.

I love Helena’s fashion antics. I assume she’s just sticking it to the Establishment, and I love it.

I can’t stand watching her movies, though. (Except The King’s Speech.)

I loved Gervais. He was a riot. The Hefner bit alone was priceless.

“Just don’t look at it when you touch it.”

“Please welcome Aston Kutcher’s dad - Bruce Willis.”

I don’t get that one…

Bruce Willis ex is Demi Moore who is now dating the much younger Kutcher.

The difference is that Gervais would have seen the funny side.

Just look at what the Yanks did to The Office and how well such shitcoms as Friends rate and you’ll see why what Americans find funny is often completely different from what the rest of the world do. They especially don’t take well to being poked fun at.

Gervais did abandon one of his more provocative ideas. He was going to come out dressed like Hitler, look at the audience and say “Too much?”

Which is hilarious to me but in a Hollywood filled with a lot of very powerful Jewish men would pretty much get him blackballed for good.

“Too soon” would have been funnier.

Just want to jump on board with the people that enjoyed Gervais’s performance. I didn’t find it all that offensive, but even if it had been, he’s a comedian ferchrissake. I never realized what a bunch of pussies there are in Hollywood (no jokes people!). I just read an article that said not only will he not be invited back to host but any movie he ever makes will never be nominated by the HWFP. Talk about needing to chug on off to namby pamby land and find some self esteem. . .

Yeah, Ricky was pushing the envelope, but if you didn’t expect that when you hired him, you weren’t paying attention. I personally thought he was funny only about half the time or so, but I think he makes a good host for this gig.

Just to clarify, he actually said something like, “One of the next presenters is a Hollywood legend, who has starred in Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, and Apollo 13. The other is Tim Allen.” That’s not nearly as mean-spirited as you remember … and in fact is the type of intro you hear every year at the Oscars from people like Billy Crystal or even Johnny Carson, for Pete’s sake.

I did like the reply from Tom and Tim … Tom said, “We remember Ricky from when he was just a slightly chubby comedian ..” which Tim followed up with “Neither of which he is now” or something similar. Now that’s good repartee!

The thought that kept running through my mind was: the celebs say worse things about Sarah Palin and now, when the shoe is on the other foot, they’re not happy about being on the receiving end. And they will go right back to their Palin bashing having not made the connection at all. :smack:
