I have an enormous triple trunk Box Elder tree in my front yard. It is infested with carpenter ants. We have lost very large branches four times in the last five years. The last time it came down on the front of our house. We were very fortunate that we didn’t have any damage left from that.
At 8.00 Wednesday morning a crew will be here to take it down and grind the stump. It will be a large load of of my mind. Here is the “before” picture:
Evening all. Soccer has been practiced and sammich procured at Sonic Drive-IN, where I indulged myself with a Chocolate Shake. Evening has settled in so internettin’ and readin’ and maybe some basketball will fill out the night. No nappage so hopefully I’ll get too bed at a decent hour.
hippie, that’s an impressive tree; neighborhood will definitely look different without it.
Uuugghh. 8 miles today, and my feet hurt. I’m now guzzling water like one of those grizzled characters who trekked across the Sahara.
hippy, that’s a big, beautiful tree, but it sounds like it’s gotta come down before it does some serious damage. Any idea how old it is?
red, I’ve never heard of Dyngus Day, and I grew up in an Italian-Polish-Irish Chicago suburb and knew quite a few people in Chicago proper. I’ll have to ask my Chicagoland friends. Sounds like I missed out!
No idea. We have lived here 35 years. The three trunks were about a foot in diameter each when we moved in. We have a cedar and a red maple in the back yard that we planted and a black walnut that was a volunteer since we moved in
Culinary terminology question: spaghetti sauce, combined with macaroni and parmesan/romano (yes, from a shaker canister). What would we call this concoction that will be my lunch at least one day this week?
The pollen counts are really low this morning. Might have something to do with the 4" of snow. Probably lost all the tulips that were just getting ready to bloom.
We haven’t been to the office since January, but today we have an appointment in town at 7:30. And it’s in an area where parking is practically impossible, so we going by public transportation. It’s been more than three weeks after putting away the winter clothing?
So I got out the winter coats and whatnot. Fortunately the precipitation has stopped. But I’m really not looking forward to going outside. Brr!
My dad uses the word Dyngus, so I’ll have to ask him if he’s ever heard about Dyngus day. As there are celebrations also in Cincinnati and Dayton, probably he’ll say yes. My grandparents identified more with their Germanic and Scottish heritage, but there’s some Prussian as well, but I don’t know which region. Food sounds good, though.
Does he use “Dyngus” or “dingus”? When I looked up “Dyngus Day” after red’s post, the definition of Dyngus was “worthy, proper.” Dingus, on the other hand, is a slang term meaning idiot, though I’ve heard it used when someone can’t recall the name of something. ("The little dingus that turns on the light is broken.)
there aren’t any big after-holiday sales around here anymore as they get credit and send back a lot of the expensive stuff …easter was the usual mess .. now we’re in the midst of undecorating and it’s the usual bs there also …
yes I’m sure there’s a sin or two in that sentence ,
hippie - that’s quite a tree! Do you have a fireplace or is the wood all being hauled off. I figger there’s a coupla cords there at least… We had a huge oak removed from the far corner of our yard a few years back. It had died and if it hadn’t been right next to the road, we’d have let nature deal with it. But we didn’t want to have to worry about gigantic branches crushing pedestrians or vehicles. We told the crew to just leave the wood back there, and a neighbor passing by came and asked if he could have it, so he hauled off the lion’s share.
We’ve got a couple of dead dogwoods in the back yard that have to go - they’re in the way of mowing - but they’re small enough that we can drop them. I just need to dig around the base so we can get as much of the stumps as possible. Then I can put dirt over the area and seed it. I love dogwoods, but dead ones, not so much.
Today is aquarium day. We’ll be leaving by 7, which is normally way too early, but today we’ll be contending with rush hour and I want to get to the parking garage before 9 to get the Early Bird parking deal. We have 9:30 tickets to see the fishies. I’ll be surprised if we’re still there at noon - we shall see. FCD is going to have a rough time - his knees are really bothering him and I know he won’t let us get him a wheelchair. Anybody see the humor/irony here?
OK, time to finish reading the funnies. Then I have to clear the back seat of my car - all the Aldi bags are tossed back there. You’ll probably hear from me later this evening, tho there may be a few FB posts while we’re there.
Morning, mumpers! For some reason, I totally missed the fact that it was Moanday yesterday and forgot to log in here at all. It’s cold again, sunny and breezy. I ventured outside to haul the biiiiiiiig bin off the pavement earlier. Weather app says “An optimist would say it’s partly sunny out. That optimist is a fucking ass clown” and promises me 6C/43F all day, partly cloudy.
shoe love the ickle sneck, makes a cute bangle
hippie that tree looks amazing, shame it has to come down though. We have no trees in our garden, it’s not big enough for that. Someone on the next street has three huge conifers and probably completely block the light from the end mews house over there, and it’s home to at least two magpie familes and probably some pigeons as well.
Mooom enjoy aquarium day! Our local zoo opens again next week, I’m booking tickets for us, it’s a lovely site and great for walking around. I did an early morning organised visit once, and was lucky enough to feed the giraffes! Sadly the indoor areas won’t be open for at least another 6 weeks but just being able to visit the outdoors bit will be good.
I am going grocery shopping tonight but will not be looking for cheap chawklit, it’s most definitely not on my food plan It’s not my turn to provide dinner tonight and 'im indoors has already caused me to exceed my total points for the day. Fortunately, I had one spare point rolled over from yesterday so I’m ok there.
The postie delivered a couple of new CDs, one of them is on the stereo now and it sounds like the poor old CD player is finally wearing out. I’ve had it for over 30 years so it’s not done too badly! Time to start the reluctant search for a replacement now.
Right…soon be lunchtime, off to see what delights the fridge contains.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN I was a slugabed until just after seven this mornin’. 'Tis 48 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 83 and N.O.S. for the day. Another nice Spring day. The big item on today’s agenda is laundry. Sup shall be grilled chikin sallit and cheesey garlic bread.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.
Good morning. I was out of bed at 3:45 am and am just about done with my second cup of coffee.
I am a fan of dark chocolate but am careful to not keep any around. I can usually be content with a couple of squares of a bar, but I don’t want to tempt myself, especially since I haven’t been able to run in the last month.
Another day of work awaits. Teams meetings, budget, HR stuff, supplies, and fleet analysis.
Also, I have to call my stupid insurance company. It’s been a damn saga with these people and I’m on my last nerve with them. Long story short; a month ago I called them and told them they were charging me too much for auto insurance and they agreed. However, somehow, I had to have a whole new policy written, along with a new homeowners policy. Initially, I was pleased; the cost of my premiums was lowered considerably. However, I never got the damn policies and last week I was told they were still in underwriting, but would be sent out the next day. Yeah, still haven’t gotten them. So, this morning, I finally received an email notification that I had new documents. However, when I tried to look at them, they weren’t there. So annoying. So, now I have to call them again and see about getting these documents added to my online page so I can what the hell is going on and make my stupid payments. I’m sick of dealing with them. Should be a simple fix, but nothing is simple or easy with these people. ::::
Why can’t I get emoticons to display? What am I doing wrong?
I click on the emoticon thing at the top, pick my emoticon, but all that shows up are dots.
Let’s see, trying to find something good so this isn’t a whiny post. The lawn got mowed and I received some atta girls yesterday from various folks with whom I work. That was nice.
It is infested with carpenter ants. The last big branch (12" in diameter) that came down on the house was completely hollow and filled with pulp from the ants. This is why we have to take it down. It has become a danger to the house and even the house next door
when it comes down our front yard will go from shade to full sun. We will be rescuing Hostas all day today and moving them to a shady spot in the back yard
Good morning all. Instant Breakfast and a banana have been consumed and the temperature will be near 80F today, so all is good. Probably need to take my slacks and the ‘heavy’ comforter to the dry cleaners and get out the ‘light’ comforter for the warm season, but maybe tomorrow. Gutter are planned for 18 May, so plenty of time to be ready.
hippie, good on the hosta (had to look that up) rescue plan, just keep an eye open for those carpenter ants, they may be needing a new home soon…
Taters, good luck with the insurance folks. Haven’t had a problem with mine since my bathroom leak several years ago, but they supported me well then and hopefully will in the future.
FCM, enjoy the early morning excursion. Hope FCD bows to reality and takes care of himself.
OK, need to get onward into the day. Everyone have a good 2sday.
Good morning from the Magill household. Easter dinner on Sunday went off without a hitch. Like usual, I’d gotten a spiral cut ham from Costco. I have the ham hock and chunks of ham in the fridge all ready to make split pea soup in the Instant Pot later this week. We also had a green bean casserole that was very, very bad for you. * I also tried my hand a making homemade dinner rolls with the stand mixer. They’d come out pretty good.
I’ve just printed off an Italian bread recipe, that I think I’ll try my hand at this weekend. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Taters - Good luck with the insurance. We had switched carriers last fall, and have been pleased so far.
hippie - I’m glad you’re getting that tree taken care of. It’s a shame to lose the shade, but better to lose shade than to lose a roof.
Nettie - I’d call the concoction, “Pasta,” but I just married into the Italian.
Why am I talking about all this food on a Fast Day?
'* - Step one is essentially, “Fry up half a pound of bacon.”
