Okay folks, since I have my old name back I thought I would regale you with a tale in the old kaiwik style. Please, feel free to laugh, I did!
On Sunday my #3 daughter and I went to Fred Meyers primarily to dump my sharps container and pick up a new one, but hey! Since we were there we decided to have us a little retail therapy. So we picked out a couple of good smelling candles and some carpet shampoo, and then we hit the garden section.
My parents gave me a basket last spring with tulips, narcissus and three primroses, and when they began to lose their loveliness I planted them out by the front door. The three primroses began to bloom in September and they have been blooming all winter. I have a special fondness for primroses as my favorite grandma had them in her garden. So, with Freddie’s price being two for three bucks I chose six really pretty ones. Also, as we headed out I saw hellebores in either cream or a reddish purple. As I dithered over which to choose my daughter found a pot which had one of each blooming in it, so yay, I scored!
With the Kodiak grandparents visiting in state and due to visit on Tuesday with our grandkids, on Monday I decided that while #3 daughter was shampooing the carpet I would go outside to plant the primroses and hellebore, and tidy up some of the dead mint stalks on the other side of the sidewalk.
*A side note: with my spine and knee issues, depending on what I am doing I use a cane, walker or a wheelchair. On Monday I was using the chair.
So I was outside on my own. My kids don’t usually let me go off and do things on my own because I generally get into some sort of trouble, so I was feeling foot loose and fancy free! I got the hellebore and the primroses planted and they look great! A nice bright splash of color along the sidewalk leading to my front door, it made me smile, so it did. Unfortunately the dead stalks from last year’s mint on the other side of the walk looked ghetto, so I grabbed my snips and leaning over the side of the chair I began clipping away.
The day was warm and I was singing my gardening songs and having a wonderful time out in the yard when the wheels on the starboard side of the chair went off the sidewalk into the very soft soil and . . . over I went. I knew that my daughter would not be able to hear me over the carpet cleaner, so it was up to me to get myself right side up again. By the time I had managed that I was a muddy mess, and I could tell that the pain I was feeling was only going to get worse, and my pride was severely bruised. I carefully finished trimming back the mint before I called my daughter to help me get back in the house. She took one look at me, rolled her eyes and shook her head.
After a hot shower, some ibuprofen and flexeril and a nice hot cuppa tay later, ensconced in my recliner in front of the fire I still had a smile because I betcha my grandma is looking down and smiling at my primrose path.
